The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is an all-electric subcompact hatchback that debuted in late 2016 as a 2017 model. It offered a relatively affordable way to get into electric vehicle ownership. Key trims included the LT and Premier. New pricing ranged from around $37,000 before incentives. The Bolt EV was popular for its good range and practicality, making electric driving accessible to a wider audience. Its hatchback design offered ample cargo space, setting it apart from other EVs at the time.
The Good

The 2019 Bolt EV provides instant torque for brisk acceleration. It's reliable, with relatively few mechanical components. Its efficient electric drivetrain delivers impressive range and low running costs, appealing to practical buyers. Emotionally, it offers guilt-free driving and a taste of future technology in a stylish, comfortable package. The Bolt's value proposition is strong, especially considering the available tax incentives for EV purchases.

The Bad

One prominent weakness of the 2019 Bolt EV is its seat comfort, which some find lacking on longer drives. The rear seats are also somewhat cramped. While generally reliable, battery degradation over time is a concern for any EV, impacting range. Certain model years, including 2019, were subject to recalls related to potential battery fire risks, so verifying recall completion is essential.

What Problems Does the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV Have?

The most significant and frequently reported problem for the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV, and several other model years, is related to the high-voltage battery. This led to a massive recall due to the risk of battery fires. The recall involved replacing battery modules or, in some cases, the entire battery pack. It's crucial to verify that any 2019 Bolt EV has had this recall service performed. The issue stemmed from defects in battery cell manufacturing by LG Chem.
Other frequently reported, though less severe, problems include issues with the infotainment system, such as screen freezes or unresponsive controls. Some owners have also reported problems with the climate control system.
Long-term reliability concerns center around battery degradation. Like all EVs, the Bolt EV's battery capacity will gradually decrease over time, impacting its range. The rate of degradation depends on factors such as charging habits, climate, and usage. While Chevrolet provided an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty on the battery, excessive degradation could still be a concern for some owners, especially those putting on high mileage. Check for any history of battery-related issues or warranty claims before purchasing a used 2019 Bolt EV.

How long will the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV last?

With proper maintenance and average driving habits, a 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Electric vehicles, in general, require less frequent maintenance than gasoline cars, reducing long-term ownership costs. However, battery degradation is a key long-term durability factor. Range will decrease over time, and the rate of degradation will depend on usage. Regular software updates are essential to maintaining optimal battery performance. The battery recall work should also improve the longevity of the battery pack.

I've only had my Bolt LT for about a month, but I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase. It's a 2019 with less than 25,000 miles on it. It set me back $18.5k, but between rebates from Edison and federal tax credits I'm only out $13.5k. On top of that, because of the battery recall, it's got a brand-new battery (the part of an ev that wears out.) The Bolt is an awesome vehicle. It's small on the outside but large on the inside. I'm over 6 feet tall and I've got plenty of head and leg room. Most importantly, there's room in the cargo area for my 80 lb. Mastiff mix. If she's happy, I'm happy. The car is quiet and fast (0-60 under 7 seconds!). Visibility looking out is fantastic. I love the low beltline and large windows. The A.C. blows really cool- a definite plus living in Southern California. I had read a number of consumer reviews that complained about seat comfort. For me, it's not an issue, the seats are fine. Likewise, a number of reviewers had issue with the stock stereo system. Again, for me, the stereo sounds great. Of course, because it's electric, I won't miss paying $5+ a gallon for gas or waiting in line to pay for an oil change ever again.

I love my Bolt! I have only had to rotate the tires since I bought it, and it has over 22,000 miles on it! Chevy replaced the battery at 14k miles, so, basically, I got a new car at that point. It's completely changed how my wife drives. She used to be a pretty timid driver. Now, if she is in the front row at the stoplight, she looks across, and if there isn't a tesla in the lineup, she knows she can take 'em, and get into whatever lane she wants. I really like the fact that I never have to get gas. I just plug it into the wall (I never got a charging station). I set it for 12 amps, and I'm good.

Do not buy an EV from Chevrolet (or an other ICE automobile dealership). My 2017 Chevy Volt recently had an issue where it displayed a message "unable to charge" and as a result the car will not do anything. The battery is fully charged, but the car simply will not move. These things happen with mechanical and electrical devices and so no big deal, right? I pressed the Onstar button and they immediately arranged to have it towed to the Chevy dealer for repair. Here is where the problem became evident. All GM dealers are focused on fixing gasoline cars and they make healthy profits in doing so. It has been a week and not only is my car not fixed, the dealer openly admits that they still have no idea what is wrong with it, and mind you this not a small dealership in some farm town in middle America. It is a large dealership in a suburb about 30 minutes outside of Boston. They say they have only one person on staff who even can begin to work on the car given how "complex" the car is. They just keep telling me that the car is extremely "complex" and that I need to be patient and understand how "complex" it is. They must have used the word "complex" at least 20 times in response to every question I've asked of them over the last several days. Unlike Tesla whose service personnel are solely trained and focused on servicing electric cars, GM dealers not only are not trained or equipped to work on these cars, they also don't want to be. Electric cars need such little servicing, that they stand to lose a huge income stream if people choose EV over ICE and so they have zero motivation to try and transition to sell or service EVs. Personally I think the blend of EV and ICE provided in the Chevy Volt is a better solution than a fully electric vehicle like the Tesla, but I now know why it was a failure...the dealers wanted it to fail. I'm not suggesting that there was some grand conspiracy to make it fail, simply that if their is no motivation to make something new successful, then it is by default highly likely to fail. After this experience I've concluded that I would never buy an electric vehicle from a car dealer that has historically sold ICE vehicles. These companies and their business model which requires them to sell their cars through these legacy dealerships is going to result in their eventual downfall. It is just a matter of time before Tesla and/or other new pure electric car manufacturers bury them. They are dinosaurs that just don't know it yet.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV comes standard with a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This provides seamless smartphone integration for navigation, music, and communication. The Bolt EV also features a rearview camera for easier parking. Driver-assistance features, standard on the Premier trim and optional on the LT, include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change alert.
Optional features available on the Premier trim include a surround-view camera system, which provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle for enhanced maneuverability in tight spaces, as well as adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.
Safety features include ten standard airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control. The 2019 Bolt EV received good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also gave the 2019 Bolt EV good ratings in several crashworthiness categories. The availability of advanced safety features, especially on the Premier trim, contributes to the Bolt EV's overall safety profile, making it a well-equipped and secure option in its class. Remember to check specific crash-test ratings from both NHTSA and IIHS for the 2019 model year for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV had a starting MSRP of around $37,000 before federal and state tax incentives. The Premier trim was priced higher. Current used market prices for the 2019 Bolt EV vary depending on mileage, condition, and location, but typically range from $15,000 to $25,000. Depreciation has been significant, partly due to the battery recall and advancements in EV technology. Factors affecting resale value include battery health, recall completion, and overall condition. EVs tend to depreciate faster than gasoline vehicles, but the Bolt EV's depreciation has been somewhat exacerbated by the aforementioned recall.

2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2019 Bolt EV are generally comparable to other small hatchbacks. "Fuel" costs are significantly lower than gasoline cars, thanks to cheaper electricity rates. Maintenance is also less frequent and less expensive. However, battery replacement, if needed, can be a substantial expense. Repair costs are average, though specialized EV repairs may require certified technicians. Overall, the 2019 Bolt EV is considered economical to own due to lower running costs, offsetting potential higher initial depreciation.

2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV competed with the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Kia Niro EV. In terms of range, the Bolt EV generally offered more than the base LEAF but was comparable to or slightly less than the Kona Electric and Niro EV. Performance was similar across the board, with all offering instant torque and brisk acceleration.
Features were competitive, but the Bolt EV lacked some of the advanced driver-assistance features available on some rivals, especially on the base trim. Reliability was a concern for the Bolt EV due to the battery recall, whereas the Kona Electric and Niro EV had fewer reported issues.
Price-wise, the Bolt EV was generally positioned competitively, especially after incentives. Alternatives to consider include the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV, which offer similar range and features with potentially better long-term reliability. If budget is a concern, a used Nissan LEAF might be an option, but with lower range. Overall, the Bolt EV remains a compelling choice, but it's essential to compare it carefully with its rivals, considering their respective strengths and weaknesses, and ensuring that the battery recall has been addressed.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV a Good Hatchback?

The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is ideal for city dwellers and commuters seeking an affordable and practical electric vehicle. It's worth buying, *provided* the battery recall has been completed. A used 2019 Bolt EV can represent excellent value, offering significant savings compared to new EVs. The Premier trim is recommended for its added features, particularly the advanced safety systems. However, budget-conscious buyers may find the LT trim sufficient. Thoroughly inspect the battery condition and maintenance history before purchasing any used Bolt EV. Consider the availability of charging infrastructure in your area before committing to EV ownership.

I've had my 2019 Bolt Premier for a month now and it's

I've had my 2019 Bolt Premier for a month now and it's really a clever little vehicle. Nimble and fun to drive with lots of room (can fit two mt bikes in the back). Coming from a VW GTI I expected the Bolt to be a substantial step down, but it's not. Granted the GTI is leagues ahead in both interior and exterior build quality, but the Bolt is no slouch in terms of what a fun-sized EV hatch should be. With a low center of gravity, loads of "O" torque and a decent suspension, the Bolt doesn't embarrass itself while performing it's appointed tasks around town. Sure, the steering could benefit from taking a communications class and the brakes are less than linier but the single pedal driving dynamic is outstanding (I could seriously go on for a while regarding how intuitive the one pedal regen system is on the Bolt, kudos to GM for their work on this feature). The rest of the gripes about the Bolt (plastic interior, uncomfortable front seats, low res screens, odd styling) I think miss the mark regarding the sum of it's parts. At the end of the day, does the Bolt deliver a satisfying experience and leave you with a smile? Absolutely!

Great commuter car w/o commuter gas bill!

Battery replacement and recall fiasco (still waiting for battery replacement) put reliability level at 1 star. The rest of car reliability is 5 stars (literally no other issues). I guess Average reliability rating for me is 3 stars. After initial hype (first year of model 2017) and once dealerships started discounting Bolts (beginning of 2019) to price levels of regular gas commuter cars (Corolla, Civic...) - I became very interested. Finally with huge discount from MSRP purchased new LT model in May 2019. Since, it has been joyride! Drivability, peppiness, interior practicality and space...there are many great features this car has. Not going to gas station and charging at home is huge plus!

Almost perfect...lots of space, fast city car.

Just needs a self drive feature and could have new 100 amp charging, gos well in pack snow , bad on ice, 1/2 your range in winter here. Be nice if ski hills had chargers.

I like the drive. I don't like Champion Chevrolet

The car it great. The only trouble with the car is having to deal with Champion Chevrolet Reno service department. You cannot reach them. They do not return calls left by phone or on the web. I brought the car in for a recall and they had me leave the car all day picking it up without paperwork. Then, they call me 3 weeks later saying the part is in and to schedule to drop off the car to get the work done. I was lied to and inconvenienced. I love to car but dealing the Champion Chevrolet service has left me with a bad feeling about the Chevy Bolt.

Most reliable Chevy made in my opinion!

I drive 40 miles one way for my commute and have had zero issues so far. I haven't had to buy gas for 6 months which is incredible. I traded in my gas guzzling, unreliable xxx 2016 Ford f-150 in for this beauty! Buy one, you wont regret it! This car made me have a completely new perspective about the GM brand in a good way.
