New Hampshire License Plates & Placards

A vehicle must have a title before it can be registered in New Hampshire. All motor vehicles must be registered first in the town or city in which the owner reside and then proceed to registration in the state .

If you are a New Hampshire resident, your vehicle must be registered in New Hampshire. New residents are given 60 days from the date they move to New Hampshire to register their vehicles.

New Hampshire require two license plates to be displayed. If you are issued 2 number plates, both must be displayed – one at the front, and one at the rear of the vehicle, together with any current validation sticker issued by the department.

Transferring of License Plates in New Hampshire

You may transfer your license plates from from a currently registered vehicle to a new vehicle if the owner’s name on the old registration and the new registration are the same. Once the plates have been transferred, the old vehicle is no longer legally registered and may not be driven on any roadway.
