The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a mid-size sedan blending Toyota's reliability with hybrid technology. Part of the sixth-generation Camry (2007-2011), it came in a single, well-equipped trim. Its popularity stemmed from its excellent fuel economy and comfortable ride. New pricing ranged from around $26,000, while used prices vary considerably. It stood out for offering a practical, fuel-efficient alternative in the family sedan segment.
The Good

The 2009 Camry Hybrid offers a smooth, quiet ride and exceptional fuel efficiency, appealing to practical buyers. Toyota's reputation for reliability provides peace of mind. Its comfortable interior and spaciousness also attract those seeking a pleasant driving experience, adding an emotional element of satisfaction to ownership. Good value for money seals the deal.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include battery degradation over time, which can impact fuel economy and performance. Some owners have reported issues with the hybrid system's inverter. The interior design, while functional, might be considered bland by some. Additionally, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) can feel uninspiring. What Problems Does the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid often center around the hybrid battery pack. Over time, the battery's capacity can diminish, leading to reduced fuel economy and performance. Replacement can be costly. Some owners have also reported issues with the hybrid system's inverter, which can cause the vehicle to stall or shut down. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes, is crucial to mitigate these risks.

Recalls for the 2009 Camry Hybrid have included issues related to the accelerator pedal potentially becoming stuck and floor mat interference. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN against recall databases to ensure all necessary repairs have been performed.

Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the longevity of the hybrid components. While Toyota's hybrid systems are generally robust, components like the battery and inverter can require replacement after a certain number of years or miles. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) has also been reported to experience issues, although less frequently than the hybrid components. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended.

How long will the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Long-term durability largely depends on diligent maintenance habits, especially regarding the hybrid battery. Weaknesses that emerge over time include potential battery degradation, inverter issues, and wear and tear on suspension components. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant) are essential to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Keeping up with tire rotations and brake maintenance is also important.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a hybrid system monitor displaying energy flow. Driver-assistance features were limited, with cruise control being a standard offering.

Optional features included a navigation system (typically a touchscreen unit), a JBL premium audio system, and heated front seats. These added a touch of luxury and convenience.

Safety features were comprehensive for the era, including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and a full complement of airbags (front, side, and side curtain).

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) were generally positive. The 2009 Camry (including the hybrid model) typically received good ratings in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS also gave it a "Good" rating in its moderate overlap front crash test. Detailed ratings can be found on the NHTSA and IIHS websites.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid had an MSRP starting around $26,000. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and location. Expect to find them ranging from approximately $5,000 to $12,000, but this can fluctuate. Depreciation has been considerable, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the condition of the hybrid battery, overall mechanical health, and cosmetic appearance. Models with well-documented maintenance histories and lower mileage command higher prices.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are low due to its excellent fuel economy. Maintenance costs are generally reasonable, especially if regular servicing is followed. Repair costs can be higher if the hybrid battery or inverter needs replacement, but overall, it's a relatively affordable vehicle to maintain in the long run compared to other hybrids or cars with similar mileage. Finding qualified mechanics for hybrid-specific repairs is important.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid competed with other mid-size hybrid sedans like the Nissan Altima Hybrid and the Ford Fusion Hybrid. In terms of reliability, the Camry Hybrid generally outperforms both the Altima Hybrid and the Fusion Hybrid. The Camry's hybrid system is known for its longevity. Performance is similar across the board, with all models offering adequate acceleration for daily driving.

Feature-wise, the Camry Hybrid was competitive, offering a similar level of standard and optional equipment. Price-wise, the Camry Hybrid was typically slightly more expensive than the Altima Hybrid but comparable to the Fusion Hybrid when new. In the used market, prices vary depending on condition and mileage.

A potentially better alternative, depending on individual needs, could be a newer Toyota Prius. While smaller, it offers even better fuel economy and is generally more reliable. If space isn't a primary concern, the Prius is a strong contender. A similar alternative would be a newer Camry Hybrid (2012 or newer), which typically offers updated technology and improved fuel efficiency.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient mid-size sedan. It's particularly well-suited for commuters and those who prioritize practicality over sporty performance. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on its condition, especially the health of the hybrid battery. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is crucial. It's generally recommended to buy a used 2009 Camry Hybrid only if it has been well-maintained and the battery shows no signs of significant degradation. Lower mileage examples are preferable, but prioritize condition over mileage. Avoid if the asking price doesn't reflect potential battery replacement costs.

2009 Hybrid base model. 8/10

Comfortable and good torque as a hybrid. Minus points: fan noisy even at low speed. Consumption quite abnormal. Car given @ 5-6l/100. I never did better than 8/8.5 driving conservatively. The speed to achieve 5-6 would be under 30/35 at all times. Unachievable. Toyota lies. Trunk too small. New batteries are smaller they say.

COMPLETE RELIABILITY

Bought our 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid new in April of 2008. Never had such a trouble free car, EVER. Still has the original brakes, crank battery and Hybrid battery, even after 10+ years and 214,000 miles. The only things that have failed was one rear door locking mechanism and the information screen on the dashboard. Gets a consistent 36 MPG. Have hit 2 deer and a fast moving tire mounted on a wheel on the interstate. Had the car repaired with OEM Toyota parts and it still looks and drives like a dream. We recently purchased a 2018 Hond Accord Hybrid and hope it lasts as long as our Toyota.

The Camry Hybrid is a smooth, quiet and more efficient version of the regular Camry. It?s reliability is excellent. It has plenty of space, and causes no daily hassles. It is an appliance that simply works.

This is my second and best Toyota Camry.

I have been buying Toyotas? Since Toyota owned a factory store in Hollywood, California . I bought my first Toyota there and I?ve been happy with every one I?ve owned. They seem to be getting better, this 2009 Camry hybrid gives me the space I need for passengers in a larger car but with the fuel economy of a smaller car. I love it.
