The 2020 BMW M8 represents the pinnacle of BMW's performance and luxury. As part of the 8 Series lineage, the M8 is available as a Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe (four-door). The 2020 model year marked its introduction. Key trims include the standard M8 and the Competition model, offering increased power and track-focused features. Pricing ranged from approximately $130,000 to $150,000+. It stands out for its potent twin-turbo V8 engine, luxurious interior, and combination of performance and grand touring capability.
The Good

The 2020 BMW M8 boasts incredible performance from its powerful engine, offering exhilarating acceleration. Comfort is prioritized with a luxurious interior and advanced technology. Its striking design appeals emotionally. Practically, it offers usable space and a level of reliability expected from a BMW, though maintenance costs are high. While not fuel-efficient, its grand touring capability makes it a versatile choice.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2020 BMW M8 include its high price tag, which may deter some buyers. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial. Some owners have reported minor electronic glitches. The ride, while comfortable, can be firm, especially on the Competition model. Its size can make it less agile in tight spaces.

What Problems Does the 2020 BMW M8 Have?

The 2020 BMW M8, while generally reliable, has had some frequently reported problems and recalls. Some owners have reported issues with the iDrive infotainment system, including glitches and software malfunctions. There have also been some reports of minor electrical issues, such as sensor malfunctions.

Specifically, some owners have mentioned issues related to the adaptive suspension system, particularly with the sensors that control dampening. These issues can sometimes lead to warning lights and affect ride quality. The high-performance tires are prone to wear, requiring frequent replacements, especially with aggressive driving.

Recalls, although not always extensive, should be checked via the NHTSA website using the VIN. Typical BMW recalls can involve fuel pump issues, airbag malfunctions, or software glitches. It's important to note that the M8, being a high-performance vehicle, requires diligent maintenance to ensure long-term reliability. Failing to adhere to the recommended service schedule can lead to more significant problems down the line. Regular oil changes, inspections, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Furthermore, given the complexity of the car's systems, finding a qualified BMW technician for repairs is essential.

How long will the 2020 BMW M8 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 BMW M8 can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Years of service depend heavily on usage and care. Many owners report experiencing few major issues within the first 5-7 years with consistent maintenance.

However, long-term durability can be affected by factors like climate, driving style, and adherence to service schedules. Weaknesses over time can include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for turbocharger issues, and the ongoing maintenance demands of a high-performance engine. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 BMW M8 is equipped with a plethora of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

Tech & Entertainment: It features BMW's iDrive 7.0 infotainment system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. A Harman Kardon surround sound system provides high-quality audio. Optional features include a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System for an even more immersive experience and gesture control.

Driver-Assistance: Standard driver-assistance features include lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control is also available. Optional features include lane keep assist and a surround-view camera system.

Safety Features: Standard safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. A head-up display projects important information onto the windshield, helping drivers keep their eyes on the road.

Crash-Test Ratings: While specific crash-test ratings for the 2020 BMW M8 may not be available from both NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) due to the vehicle's low production volume, the 8 Series (upon which the M8 is based) generally performs well in safety tests. It's advisable to check the latest ratings on the official NHTSA and IIHS websites. Always prioritize checking the most current safety data.

2020 BMW M8 Prices and Market Value

The 2020 BMW M8 had a starting MSRP of around $130,000 for the base model and upwards of $146,000 for the Competition trim. Used market prices currently range from approximately $80,000 to $110,000, depending on mileage, condition, and options.

The M8 experiences considerable depreciation, especially in the first few years. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and optional equipment. Lower mileage, a clean title, and complete service records contribute to higher resale value. Desirable options, such as the Competition package and premium audio systems, can also positively impact resale.

2020 BMW M8 Cost of Ownership

The 2020 BMW M8 is definitely a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its performance capabilities and value. Fuel costs are significant given its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs are also substantial, as it requires specialized parts and service. Long-term ownership involves ongoing expenses for tires, brakes, and potential repairs. It is far from economical and best suited for buyers prepared for premium ownership costs.

2020 BMW M8 Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 BMW M8 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 BMW M8 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2020 BMW M8 competes with vehicles like the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S, Porsche 911 Turbo S, and Audi R8.

Performance: The M8 offers comparable or slightly less performance than the Porsche 911 Turbo S, particularly in handling agility. The AMG GT 63 S offers similar straight-line speed but a different driving experience. The Audi R8 provides a more raw and visceral feel.

Features: The M8 is well-equipped, matching or exceeding the AMG GT 63 S in terms of luxury and technology. The Porsche 911 focuses more on performance than luxury features. The Audi R8 is less feature-rich than the BMW.

Reliability: BMW's reliability record is generally good, but the M8, being a complex performance vehicle, may have higher maintenance costs. Porsche is often rated higher in reliability. The AMG GT 63 S can have similar maintenance concerns.

Price: The M8 is similarly priced to the AMG GT 63 S and Porsche 911 Turbo S, but the R8 can sometimes be found for less.

Alternatives: Depending on priorities, the Porsche 911 Turbo S is a strong alternative for ultimate performance. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S is a good choice for those prioritizing luxury and presence. For a more driver-focused experience, the Audi R8 is worth considering.
