The Good
The 2004 GMC Safari offered a blend of practicality and capability. Its strong V6 engine provided decent performance and towing capacity (practical). It was known for its ruggedness and relatively simple mechanicals, contributing to reliability. While not luxurious, it offered comfortable seating for passengers and a spacious cargo area. Its boxy design was functional, and its affordability made it a value choice. Some owners appreciated its nostalgic, "old-school" minivan feel (emotional).
The Bad
Weaknesses of the 2004 GMC Safari included relatively poor fuel economy compared to front-wheel-drive minivans. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, was a common problem. The interior felt dated even when new. Owners should watch out for transmission issues, particularly with higher mileage. Suspension components and brake lines are also prone to wear and corrosion. Some report electrical issues related to the door locks and windows.
2004 GMC Safari: Quick Overview
- Engine Options: 4.3L Vortec V6
- Horsepower: 190 hp
- Fuel Economy: Approximately 15 mpg city / 20 mpg highway (RWD), slightly lower for AWD
- 0-60 Times: Around 10-11 seconds (estimated)
- Towing Capacity: Up to 5,500 lbs (with proper equipment)
- Trim-Level Features:
- Base (Cargo Van): Minimal features, vinyl seating, basic radio, steel wheels.
- SL: Cloth seating, upgraded interior trim, available power windows and locks.
- SLE: More features including premium cloth, cruise control, upgraded sound system, and exterior appearance enhancements. Optional equipment included rear air conditioning, power driver's seat, and alloy wheels.
- Key Specs Notes: The 4.3L V6 engine was the only engine option for 2004. All models came standard with an automatic transmission. AWD was an available option on some trims, providing enhanced traction in inclement weather. Cargo vans focused on utility and cargo capacity, while passenger vans offered seating for up to eight passengers depending on configuration. The towing capacity made it suitable for light to medium duty hauling. The trim levels defined the level of comfort, convenience, and appearance options for the vehicle. The SLE trim represented the highest level of available features.

What Problems Does the 2004 GMC Safari Have?
How long will the 2004 GMC Safari last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally average for the time. While specific ratings can vary, the Safari received acceptable scores in frontal crash tests. Side-impact protection was less robust due to the vehicle's design. Overall, the 2004 Safari prioritized practicality and utility over advanced technology and safety features. Modern conveniences like navigation systems, backup cameras, and advanced driver-assistance systems were not available. Its safety features were standard for its time, but significantly less comprehensive than what's available in newer vehicles. Consider this when purchasing for family use and prioritize proper installation of car seats and safe driving practices.

How Does the 2004 GMC Safari Compare to Other Van?
Alternatives to the Safari include: The **Toyota Sienna** and **Honda Odyssey** offered superior reliability and more modern features, but at a higher price point. The **Dodge Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country** provided similar practicality and lower prices, but their reliability was often questioned. If towing is a priority, the Safari remained a decent choice. For family hauling with better reliability, the Sienna or Odyssey are superior options, if budget allows. If you need a cargo van, consider a newer full-size van for better fuel economy and reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 GMC Safari a Good Van?

Wish they still made them!Loved this van! I'm short and sat up high enough to see over short front hood. Had four captains with removable 3rd bench seat. Large enough interior to haul 4x8 sheet plywood and for me to walk front to back on the flat floor. Loved all the extra little storage compartments. All wheel drive and power enough to get through any snow bank! Had it 14 years and would have purchased another, but they discontinued making them.

RWD mid size van on a truck chassisFantastic RWD mid size van with lots of people/cargo space and towing power. GMC should have never discontinued this vehicle. Only a $$$$$ 1/2 ton truck with crew cab comes close to replacing what this mighty van can do for you. Google it if you do not believe me. It is great for a long vacation or to take your group of friends out to dinner or concert, or to tow your boat or camper. I had 5 Astro/Safari over the last 25 years and they never let me down. One of them I drove it past 350k miles without any major troubles.
