The Porsche Taycan, introduced in 2019 as a 2020 model, marks Porsche's entry into the all-electric vehicle market. The 2023 Taycan is a 4-door sedan and wagon (Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo). Key trims include the base Taycan, 4S, GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S. Pricing ranges from around $90,000 to over $190,000. Its blend of Porsche performance and electric power, combined with a luxurious interior and striking design, makes it highly desirable.
The Good

The 2023 Taycan offers exhilarating performance, precise handling, and rapid acceleration, appealing to the emotional buyer. Practically, it provides a comfortable and refined ride, advanced technology, and the efficiency of an electric vehicle. While not inexpensive, it delivers a premium experience that justifies its price for many.

The Bad

The 2023 Taycan's weaknesses include its high price point, which puts it out of reach for many buyers. Range can be less than some competitors, particularly in colder climates or with aggressive driving. The rear seat can feel cramped for taller passengers, and option packages can significantly inflate the final cost.

What Problems Does the 2023 Porsche Taycan Have?

The Taycan, being a relatively new model, has had a few reported issues. Some owners have experienced software glitches with the infotainment system and charging issues. There have been a few recalls related to potential issues with the seat belt buckle, power steering, and high-voltage battery. Early model years (2020-2021) had more reported software problems, which Porsche has addressed through over-the-air updates. Long-term reliability remains to be fully established, but Porsche's reputation for build quality is generally positive. However, the complex electrical systems and high-voltage components could potentially lead to higher repair costs down the line. It's crucial to keep up with scheduled maintenance and software updates to mitigate potential problems. Some owners have also reported issues with the 12V battery, which can cause problems with starting and other electrical functions. Potential buyers should check for any outstanding recalls and review service records before purchasing a used Taycan.

How long will the 2023 Porsche Taycan last?

Given the Taycan's relatively recent introduction, long-term data is still emerging. However, with proper maintenance and conservative driving habits, a Taycan should last for 150,000 miles or more. Battery degradation is a factor to consider; expect some reduction in range over time, but Porsche offers a battery warranty. The high-voltage components and complex electronics are potential weak points over the long term, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Regular servicing and software updates are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan and preventing major issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Porsche Taycan boasts a cutting-edge tech suite. Standard features include a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, navigation, and a customizable digital instrument cluster. Driver-assistance features include lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include a head-up display, surround-view camera system, and Porsche InnoDrive (adaptive cruise control with lane centering).
For entertainment, the Taycan offers a premium sound system. Available options include a Burmester high-end surround sound system.
The Taycan prioritizes safety, with a robust structure and advanced safety technologies. While specific 2023 crash-test ratings may vary depending on the testing agency (NHTSA, IIHS), the Taycan generally performs well in crash tests. Features like multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes are standard. The optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) helps improve handling and stability. Additionally, the Taycan includes features such as pedestrian detection and automatic high beams. Note that availability of specific features may vary depending on the trim level and optional packages chosen.

2023 Porsche Taycan Prices and Market Value

The 2023 Porsche Taycan's new price ranged from approximately $90,000 to over $190,000, depending on the trim and options. Used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and trim, typically ranging from $70,000 to $150,000. Depreciation is moderate for a luxury electric vehicle; however, high demand for EVs and Porsche's brand reputation help maintain resale value. Factors affecting resale value include battery health, overall condition, mileage, optional equipment, and whether it's a desirable trim like the Turbo or Turbo S.

2023 Porsche Taycan Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Porsche Taycan is generally costly to own. Insurance premiums are high due to the vehicle's value and performance. While electricity costs are lower than gasoline, maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially for specialized components. Regular maintenance, while perhaps less frequent than an ICE vehicle, still requires dealer visits and software updates. Expect higher repair costs for the battery and electric motors. While “fuel” costs are low, overall ownership is not economical.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 Porsche Taycan Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2023 Porsche Taycan competes with the Tesla Model S, Audi e-tron GT, and Mercedes-Benz EQS. In terms of performance, the Taycan offers a more engaging driving experience than the EQS and is closer to the Model S and e-tron GT. Features are comparable across these models, although Porsche's options list can quickly escalate the price. Reliability is an ongoing concern for all EVs, but the Taycan has seen some software issues. The Tesla Model S offers longer range and access to Tesla's Supercharger network. The Audi e-tron GT shares a platform with the Taycan but offers a slightly different driving experience. The Mercedes-Benz EQS prioritizes luxury and comfort. Depending on priorities, alternatives include the Model S for range and charging infrastructure, the e-tron GT for a similar Porsche experience at a slightly lower cost (depending on options), or the EQS for ultimate luxury. All of these vehicles are expensive, so individual preferences are key. For pure driving pleasure, the Taycan is hard to beat, but other alternatives may offer better value or specific advantages.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Porsche Taycan a Good Sedan?

The 2023 Porsche Taycan is ideal for buyers seeking a high-performance electric vehicle with Porsche DNA. It's worth buying if you prioritize driving experience and brand prestige and are comfortable with the high price and potential maintenance costs. A used Taycan can offer better value, but carefully inspect battery health and service history. Consider the 4S or GTS trims for a good balance of performance and features. The Turbo and Turbo S are for those who want ultimate performance, while the base model still provides a compelling experience. Assess your range needs and charging infrastructure before committing.

The Taycan is an absolute nightmare.

The Taycan is an absolute nightmare. Mine was in the shop for 3 months this summer! Within days of getting it back, the AC stopped working and it’s now back in the shop indefinitely. Porsche’s customer service has been a complete let down all the way from the top, down to the local dealership in Clearwater, Florida. I’m paying almost $2k a month for a car I can’t even drive. Porsche doesn’t care about quality or customer satisfaction anymore.

Punch it! Pull Some Gs!

Taycan drivers love the performance, handling and acceleration according to Predicta's EV dataset. Their comments strongly place the Taycan high on the Love index. Of course, what would you expect from a Porsche? It's all about the performance, baby!
