2021 Tesla Model Y Review: Reliable Small Electric SUV With Very Low Ownership Costs

Rating: 3.40
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2021 Tesla Model Y is an all-electric compact SUV expanding Tesla's lineup beyond sedans. It shares many components with the Model 3. Its body style is a crossover SUV. Key trims include Long Range and Performance. New pricing ranged approximately from $50,000 to $70,000. Its popularity stems from its impressive range, performance, access to Tesla's Supercharger network, and minimalist, tech-forward interior, alongside its practical SUV body style.
The Good

The 2021 Tesla Model Y boasts exceptional performance with rapid acceleration, appealing to thrill-seeking drivers. Its electric drivetrain offers high efficiency and reduced running costs, a practical advantage. The minimalist design and advanced technology provide a modern, desirable aesthetic. The Supercharger network adds peace of mind for long journeys. Ride quality and comfort, however, can be seen as average in some tests.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2021 Tesla Model Y include build quality inconsistencies, which may manifest as panel gaps or interior trim issues. The ride can be firm, especially on larger wheels. The minimalist interior may not appeal to all buyers, and some features are only accessible through the central touchscreen. Repair costs can also be higher than average.

What Problems Does the 2021 Tesla Model Y Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2021 Tesla Model Y often revolve around build quality. These can include misaligned panels, inconsistent paint application, and issues with interior trim pieces. Some owners have reported problems with the touchscreen malfunctioning or experiencing software glitches. Suspension components, particularly the front control arms, have also been cited as areas of concern, with some reports of premature wear or failure.
Recalls for the 2021 Model Y have addressed issues such as improperly tightened fasteners on suspension components, potentially leading to instability. Other recalls have involved issues with seat belt anchors and brake calipers.
Long-term reliability remains a concern for some, particularly regarding the battery's lifespan and potential degradation over time. While Tesla provides warranties for the battery and drivetrain, the actual lifespan and performance can vary depending on driving habits and charging practices. Early Model Y vehicles had some quality control issues, but Tesla has made ongoing improvements to address these problems in later production runs and subsequent model years. However, potential buyers should still carefully inspect any used 2021 Model Y for signs of previous repairs or existing quality issues.

How long will the 2021 Tesla Model Y last?

Based on owner data and typical maintenance, a 2021 Tesla Model Y can be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. Battery degradation is a key long-term consideration; expect some reduction in range over time, though Tesla's battery management system is designed to mitigate this. Regular software updates contribute to longevity, but suspension components and the touchscreen are potential weaknesses. Proper charging habits (avoiding extreme charge levels) and timely maintenance can extend the vehicle's lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews
Daniel
The Tesla Model Y is a triumph of modern automotive engineering, blending cutting-edge technology with sustainable performance. It's a game-changer in the electric vehicle market, setting new standards for efficiency, comfort, and driving pleasure. From its sleek, aerodynamic design to its spacious, minimalist interior, the Model Y exudes elegance and sophistication. The vehicle's impressive acceleration and responsive handling make it a joy to drive, offering an exhilarating experience that rivals that of sports cars. Tesla's advanced Autopilot system and the potential for full self-driving capabilities in the future elevate the Model Y beyond its competitors. It's not just a car; it's a glimpse into the future of transportation. The expansive all-glass roof provides a sense of openness and brings in natural light, enhancing the already pleasant cabin atmosphere. Can't recommend it highly enough!
Sergio
One of the best cars I owned. With recent price reduction on Teslas, this car is excellent value. First of acceleration does not get old. Puts a smile on my face every time. One pedal driving is fantastic once you get used to it. So many different features and you get more with every update. This is so cool to own car for 6 month or longer and still get new features. I’m assuming they had some quality issue with early models. Mine is 2022 and fit and finish is excellent. All works as advertised. I was a bit skeptical about getting a Tesla myself due to so many negative comments. But my personal experience is excellent. No rattles. Love using my phone as a key. So convenient. Audio system is one of the best in business. Give Tesla a try and you will not be disappointed. Range is plenty for daily city driving. Saving ton of money on gas. Convenience of charging at home. No more Costco gas station lines. Time will tell, but as far as I understand this electric engines are much simpler and this more reliable in a long term.
Negative Owner Reviews

Constant battery problems, I really regret ever buying this poorly designed car, it's totally unreliable. Avoid at all costs if looking for an electric vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Tesla Model Y boasts a minimalist interior dominated by a 15-inch touchscreen that controls almost all vehicle functions. Standard tech includes navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, a premium audio system, and over-the-air software updates. Entertainment features include streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, YouTube) when parked and a gaming arcade.
Standard driver-assistance features include Autopilot, which provides adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. Enhanced Autopilot (optional) adds features like Navigate on Autopilot, automatic lane changes, and automatic parking. Full Self-Driving Capability (optional) adds traffic light and stop sign control.
Safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. The Model Y received excellent crash-test ratings from the NHTSA, earning a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick+.
Optional features included different wheel sizes, paint colors, interior trim options, and the tow package. The minimalist design focuses on the central screen for nearly all controls, which can take some getting used to, but delivers a modern and tech-forward experience.

2021 Tesla Model Y Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Tesla Model Y ranged from approximately $50,000 to $70,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used prices typically range from $35,000 to $55,000. Depreciation has been relatively mild compared to some other vehicles, due to high demand for electric vehicles and the Tesla brand. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, battery health, and whether the vehicle has Full Self-Driving Capability. Color and interior options can also play a minor role. Tesla's Supercharger network access also increases resale value.

2021 Tesla Model Y Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2021 Tesla Model Y tend to be higher than average due to its high repair costs and complex technology. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline, making it economical to "fuel". Maintenance is relatively low, as EVs have fewer moving parts. However, repairs can be expensive due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate overall, driven by low running costs offsetting potentially higher insurance and repair expenses.

2021 Tesla Model Y Insurance

Insurance for a 2021 Tesla Model Y is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Tesla Model Y Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Tesla Model Y competes with other electric SUVs like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Kia EV6.
Performance: The Model Y generally excels in acceleration compared to most rivals.
Features: Its tech-forward interior and Supercharger network are major advantages. While others have fast charging networks, Tesla's is more mature and widespread.
Reliability: The Model Y's reliability has been questioned compared to established brands like Hyundai and Kia, whose EVs generally demonstrate higher initial quality.
Price: The Model Y can be more expensive than some competitors, especially when new.
Alternatives: The Ford Mustang Mach-E offers a more conventional driving experience and improved build quality, but lacks the Supercharger network access. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 provide excellent value, fast charging capabilities, and spacious interiors with unique designs, and potentially better long-term reliability. The Volkswagen ID.4 is a more affordable option, but its performance and range are not as impressive as the Model Y's.
If reliability and build quality are primary concerns, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 or Kia EV6 may be better choices. For the best combination of performance, range, and charging infrastructure, the Model Y remains a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Tesla Model Y a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Tesla Model Y is ideal for tech-savvy buyers prioritizing performance, range, and access to Tesla's Supercharger network. It's worth buying if you appreciate its minimalist design and are willing to overlook potential build quality issues. A used Model Y can offer good value, but a thorough inspection is crucial. The Long Range trim offers a good balance of range and performance, while the Performance trim is for those seeking maximum acceleration. Consider alternatives if reliability is a primary concern.

Probably the best overall EV package

The Tesla driver interface is unique, but becomes second nature and pretty good in just a few drives. Interior is very comfortable, quiet, and spacious, but a bit sparse for the price point. Performance is great but the inability of virtually all EVs to meet their EPA range estimates without going downhill with a tailwind is disappointing. Charging at home is great. The Tesla charging network works very well as does the Tesla app on your smartphone. We have seen none of the build quality issues others have previously noted. Tesla customer support for us has been good and responsive as we’ve worked through questions and bought accessories. Overall, with weight and aero being determinants of EV range, the Model Y is a very well designed vehicle. Aero drove the exterior design and weight the interior. The resulting looks are either something you like, or not, but for their purpose, they work. Right sized and shaped outside, very spacious inside. Recent price cuts made the value decision one we could live with. Compared it with every other EV of its size and very happy with our choice.

Service is TERRIBLE Almost unbelievable how long

I have been waiting on a doorhandle for over six weeks and I’m still not able to drive my cars. It’s been at the body shop and I still cannot pick it up. I loved my Tesla up until now, but will never buy another one again. As soon as I get it out of the body shop, I plan on selling it because of the lack of service. very frustrated. Very disappointed.

Roadside assistance is terrible!

The car itself is mostly fine, however the 'service' on the vehicle is terrible. The roadside assitance program is being run by what is likely 3rd parties, that have difficultly communicating. They had me 'verify' my tires, and yet when they came out to repair the tire, the tech said this tire was unsupported! I reached back out to the service team, who 'upon investigation' discovered my tire wasn't in stock, so they couldn't even attempt a repair. When I later reached out, they now needed to tow the vehicle! (Despite not having to tow it originally). The communication was terrible, it clearly felt like dealing with a non-native speaker via text, as they had several odd/vague statements.

Constant battery problems

Constant battery problems, I really regret ever buying this poorly designed car, it's totally unreliable. Avoid at all costs if looking for an electric vehicle.

I’m excited to drive

They don’t have customer service

We bought this car I bought weeks ago. We tried to get the customer service. Still don’t have any customer service believe me or not as soon as you find out they don’t have customer service and nobody help us with trying to return this car. But we couldn’t because they don’t have any customer service the big xxxx resend it 15 email nobody respond even be losing $15,000 we don’t mind to return this car . That’s all please please before purchase go and check Tesla. They don’t have a customer service. It doesn’t worth it even they give you a free car.

Decent car. Worst customer service

Bought a Model X plaid. Delivery day came, drove to Austin Pond Springs Tesla Service Center and feels like I'm going to an auto body shop. Hard to find a customer parking spot and the service agent gave me about total of 10mins under a white tent in front of their service garage... Not talking about Land Rover or Mercedes, but a Toyota dealership would outperform this by a mile. Got the car home, found no key fobs (All Tesla official education/tutorial materials indicate I supposed to have it). Tried to call local support, got redirected, waited 30mins and gave up. Found out online it's part of their cost cutting measures... Really, $175 cost cutting on your flagship model. Day 2, paired phone not working. Drove to service center. Saw grand total of one service agent at the desk. Finally got my turn and was told nobody can take a look at the 2 day old car and I have to submit a service ticket. The scheduled ticket is 1 week away, so I bough the key fob so I don't have to swipe the key card to lock/unlock the car while waiting for service. And you know what, the brand new key fob won't pair with the car. The desk agent tried to help but to no avail, so I have to add THAT to my ticket. Waiting patiently for Tesla mobile technician to show up a week from now.
