The 2020 Volkswagen Arteon is a sleek, fastback-styled sedan intended to blend coupe-like aesthetics with sedan practicality. Introduced as a replacement for the CC, the Arteon's model years began in 2019. Key trims for 2020 include SE, SEL, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Pricing typically ranged from the low $30,000s to around $47,000. Its standout feature is its distinctive design, offering a stylish alternative to more conventional sedans, along with a spacious interior and hatchback-like cargo access.
The Good

The 2020 Arteon offers a blend of style and substance. Emotionally, its striking design and premium feel are appealing. Practically, it provides a comfortable ride, ample rear passenger space, and a generous cargo area thanks to its hatchback design. Performance is adequate, and fuel efficiency is respectable. Overall, it presents good value for those seeking a stylish and functional vehicle.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2020 Arteon include its relatively unproven long-term reliability compared to some competitors. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated to some. Additionally, the higher trims can become expensive, approaching luxury car prices without the same level of brand recognition.

What Problems Does the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Have?

While the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon hasn't been plagued by widespread major issues, some owners have reported concerns. One frequently mentioned issue revolves around the infotainment system, with complaints about occasional glitches, slow response times, or connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some owners have also reported minor electrical issues, such as sensor malfunctions or problems with the power windows.

Reliability data, while still emerging, suggests that the Arteon may not be as bulletproof as some of its more established competitors. Common concerns relate to the turbocharger system, although these are not widespread. Specific recalls for the 2020 model year should be checked on the NHTSA website to ensure any safety-related issues have been addressed.

Long-term reliability remains a question mark, as the Arteon is a relatively new model. Potential buyers should pay close attention to maintenance records and consider purchasing an extended warranty for added peace of mind. It is important to note that problems can vary between individual vehicles, and thorough pre-purchase inspections are always recommended.

How long will the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Volkswagen Arteon should be capable of reaching 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely servicing of the DSG transmission, and attention to potential turbocharger issues are crucial. Weaknesses may emerge in the electrical system or with the infotainment screen over time. Long-term durability is still being assessed, but proactive maintenance will be key to maximizing its lifespan. Vehicles subjected to harsh climates or irregular maintenance may experience a shorter lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Volkswagen Arteon comes well-equipped with technology. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and VW Car-Net services. Higher trims add navigation, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and a digital cockpit instrument cluster.

Driver-assistance features are comprehensive, with standard equipment including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, park distance control, and a surround-view camera system.

Safety features include a suite of airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific scores. Generally, the Arteon performed well in crash tests, providing a good level of occupant protection. It is important to consult the official ratings for the 2020 model year to confirm specific results. The inclusion of advanced safety tech enhances its overall appeal.

As of late 2023, used market prices typically fall in the range of $22,000 to $35,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. How Does the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2020 Volkswagen Arteon competes with vehicles like the Acura TLX, Kia Stinger, Nissan Maxima, and Buick Regal Sportback. In terms of performance, it's generally comparable, though the Stinger offers more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, it holds its own, especially in the higher trims. However, reliability is where some rivals, like the Acura TLX, might have an edge.

Price-wise, the Arteon can be competitive, but loaded models approach luxury car territory. The Kia Stinger offers similar performance and styling at a potentially lower price point. The Nissan Maxima provides a more traditional sedan experience with good value. The Buick Regal Sportback, while discontinued, is a similar liftback design.

Alternatives to consider include the Acura TLX for its reliability, the Kia Stinger for its performance and value, or a used Audi A5 Sportback for a more premium experience. The Arteon's distinctive design makes it stand out, but it's essential to weigh its strengths against the reliability and value offered by its competitors. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon a Good Sedan?

The 2020 Volkswagen Arteon is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and practical alternative to mainstream sedans. Its fastback design, spacious interior, and available tech features make it appealing. Whether it's worth buying depends on priorities. A used Arteon, especially in lower trims like the SE or SEL, offers good value. However, potential buyers should carefully consider reliability reports and prioritize well-maintained examples with comprehensive service records. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended. If style and practicality are paramount, and potential maintenance costs are factored in, the Arteon can be a worthwhile choice.

Tires!

It’s got an issue it’s got the leg room just really low to the ground. the tires are thinner for performance but if you hit a pot hole or bump it pokes holes in the tire

Much improved over the two VW CC's I have owned.

Because I received no Owner's Manual (supposedly back-ordered), I might as well be driving a random rental. Without the manual, I am unable to use or unaware of many of the latest features. The basic driving features such as acceleration, braking, steering, and road feel are good. The hatch-back vs. trunk along with folding rear seats creates a wonderfully large carrying space. On the negative side, there is a noticeable vibration at idle and the shifts are clunky. Overall, I am pleased with the car since it suits my needs nicely.

Another excellent German Car

WoW!!!. Volkswagen-Audi group did it again! They took the concept of the $70k-$90k Audi A7 sportback and developed it into a stylish (beauty of a car), hi tech, high performance Volkswagen. (Arteon SEL Premium). first class, high class.it has as much room as my old A6. Along with the awesome Arteon its pricing is more competitive than its cousin Audi A-5 (which is smaller , less features, and less horsepower). the more expensive BMW 3301 xdrive cant hold a candle to Arteon's loaded features. The Volkswagen Arteon sport mode holds that road fun to drive as well as Audi's and BMW's. I know because I have owned Audi's and BMW's. Volkswagen's brand is emerging quickly beyond it's work horse perception.
