The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle represents the final year of this iconic vehicle's production, tracing its roots back to the original Beetle of the 1930s. Available as a two-door hatchback or convertible, key trims include the S, SE, and Final Edition SEL. Pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $28,000 when new. Its retro styling, nostalgic appeal, and surprisingly fun driving dynamics made it a popular choice for those seeking a unique and cheerful car.
The Good

The 2019 Beetle offers a blend of style and practicality. Its turbocharged engine provides adequate performance and decent fuel efficiency. The iconic design appeals emotionally, while the comfortable ride and available tech features offer practical benefits. While not the most reliable car, many owners find its unique charm outweighs minor issues.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 Beetle include a smaller-than-average rear seat and trunk space, limiting practicality for families. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and minor electrical glitches. Watch out for potential problems with the turbocharger and ensure regular maintenance to prevent costly repairs.

What Problems Does the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle are relatively minor compared to some other vehicles. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system freezing or being unresponsive. Electrical glitches, such as malfunctioning sensors or lights, have also been noted.

Reliability concerns often revolve around the turbocharger, which can experience issues if not properly maintained with regular oil changes. Some owners have noted premature wear of brake pads. Check engine lights can appear due to various sensor issues, requiring diagnostic checks to pinpoint the specific problem.

While the 2019 model year itself doesn't have a significantly higher number of complaints than previous years, it's important to maintain regular servicing to prevent future issues. Recalls have been issued for various VW models related to fuel pump failures and airbag malfunctions; it's essential to check the NHTSA website to ensure the specific VIN of a 2019 Beetle is not affected by any outstanding recalls.

Long-term reliability heavily depends on maintenance habits. Consistent servicing, using quality parts, and addressing issues promptly can significantly extend the lifespan and reduce the risk of major repairs. Neglecting maintenance can lead to more frequent and expensive repairs down the line.

How long will the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and timely repairs, is crucial for longevity. Long-term durability depends heavily on preventing issues like turbocharger failure and addressing minor electrical problems promptly. Weaknesses over time can include suspension wear and potential rust in regions with harsh winters.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle comes with a decent array of tech and safety features. Standard on the base S trim is a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. Stepping up to the SE trim adds a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Final Edition SEL trim boasts the most advanced tech, including a Fender premium audio system, navigation, leather upholstery, parking sensors, and automatic climate control. Optional features include a panoramic sunroof and keyless entry.

Driver-assistance features are primarily available on higher trims and include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Beetle also features standard safety features like anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags.

Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) are generally good, although the Beetle was not subjected to all of the latest IIHS tests. Always check official sources for the most up-to-date crash test information. The standard safety features contribute to a relatively safe driving experience.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle ranged from approximately $20,000 for the base S trim to $28,000 for the Final Edition SEL. Used market prices currently range from about $15,000 to $25,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been moderate, influenced by the Beetle's status as a discontinued model and its iconic appeal. Final Edition models tend to hold their value slightly better due to their limited production. Lower mileage and excellent condition significantly boost resale value.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is relatively economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel economy is decent, contributing to lower running costs. Maintenance can be slightly more expensive than some competitors due to potential German car-specific parts and labor rates. Repair costs can be moderate, but preventative maintenance is key to avoiding major issues. Overall, long-term ownership costs are manageable, especially with careful upkeep.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle competes with stylish compact cars like the Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, and Mazda3. In terms of performance, the Beetle's 174-hp engine is adequate but not as sporty as the Mini Cooper's turbocharged options. Features are comparable in higher trims, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto being standard on many rivals.

Reliability is where the Beetle lags slightly behind the Mazda3, which has a stronger track record. The Fiat 500 offers similar retro styling but lacks the Beetle's practicality. Price-wise, the Beetle is generally competitive, although a well-equipped Mazda3 can offer similar features for a comparable price.

Alternatives to the Beetle include:
  • Mini Cooper: Offers a sportier driving experience and more customization options.
  • Mazda3: Provides superior reliability and a more refined interior.
  • Fiat 500: A smaller and more fuel-efficient option with similar retro styling.

If reliability is a top priority, the Mazda3 is a better choice. If a sporty driving experience is desired, the Mini Cooper is preferable. However, the Beetle stands out for its iconic design and unique charm, making it a compelling option for those seeking a distinctive vehicle.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle a Good Vehicle?

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish, iconic, and fun-to-drive compact car with a retro vibe. It's worth buying, especially as a used vehicle, if its unique charm and distinctive design appeal to you. A well-maintained SE or Final Edition model offers a good balance of features and value. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to assess its condition and address any potential issues. If practicality and reliability are paramount, other alternatives might be more suitable. However, for those charmed by the Beetle's personality, it remains a worthwhile purchase.

Fun, iconic vehicle

Have owned VW Beetles for the past 16 years and have been pleased with the performance and reliability of the vehicles. As of July 2019 VW will no longer produce the Beetle model, so I wanted a new 2019 model with all the upgrades and intend to keep it for as long as it runs!

My most fun car ever!

I love my Beetle Convertible!!! It is the most fun car I have ever owned. Totally strangers give me the thumbs up and love the car! This white with black top and black interior was the one I wanted to end up with. I had a red one and a black one and am retiring with the classic white. It drives so smoothly has enough room for my beach chair. Can't say that about any other small, fun, convertible!!!

Love the Beetle

The Beetle has a lot more room inside than one would think. There is plenty of leg and head room inside. It's a very comfortable ride. I love the fact that the interior temperature can be controlled separately for the driver and passenger. I also love the heated seat feature. This is my first convertible and I am enjoying it very very much. It's very easy to get the top down and back up as all that's needed is to simply push a button. Love the car.
