2019 Volkswagen Jetta Review: Unreliable Small Sedan With High Repair Costs

Rating: 4.57
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta represents the seventh generation of this compact sedan, a mainstay in VW's lineup since 1979. It's a four-door sedan known for its practicality and German engineering. Key trims include S, SE, R-Line, SEL, and SEL Premium. New pricing ranged roughly from $18,545 to $26,945. Its redesigned exterior, improved fuel efficiency, and available tech features contributed to its popularity.
The Good

The 2019 Jetta offers a comfortable ride and improved fuel efficiency appealing to practical buyers. Its modern design and available premium features, like the BeatsAudio system, add an emotional draw. While not a sports car, its turbocharged engine provides adequate performance and it generally offers good value for the money.

The Bad

Some reviewers noted the 2019 Jetta's interior materials weren't as upscale as some competitors. The base engine, while efficient, can feel underpowered at times. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system. Also, the rear seat headroom might be tight for taller passengers.

What Problems Does the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Have?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta has had some reported issues, although it's generally considered a reasonably reliable vehicle. Some owners have reported problems with the infotainment system, including glitches, slow response times, and connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There have also been reports related to the climate control system, such as inconsistent temperatures or malfunctioning vents. Some owners have mentioned minor electrical issues.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date information. Common recall items can include issues with fuel leaks, airbag malfunctions, or other safety-related concerns. For long-term reliability, keeping up with scheduled maintenance, such as oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial. Addressing any unusual noises or performance issues promptly can prevent more significant problems down the road. Some owners have expressed concerns about the long-term durability of certain plastic interior components. Regular inspections of the engine, transmission, and suspension components are recommended as the vehicle ages.

How long will the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections. Potential long-term weaknesses can include wear and tear on suspension components, potential issues with the turbocharger (especially if not properly maintained), and the aforementioned infotainment system glitches. Rust can also be a concern in areas with harsh winters and road salt usage, so rustproofing is recommended.

great car to drive to work everyday, to travel to other city or town with a superior suspension. also to give as gift to our son or daughter in their birthday.

So my Habenero orange R Line is named Princess... she is quick when she needs to be, and eco mode is there for when she doesn't. Gas mileage is fantastic either way. She is so responsive, the handling on her is top notch. I've put a LOT of miles on her, I think upwards of 50k without a single mechanical failure. A few accidents, the front collision sensor is a pain to replace but I like in a bumper car city, unfortunately.

I love my new (to me) VW Jetta. It come equipped with so many features. It has some things I'd never even heard of. It will correct steering if you drift out of the lane, it had heated and COOLED seats, adaptive cruise control, automatic headlights and highbeams are also auto, etc. There's more but I can't list it all.
Negative Owner Reviews

its ok but for the money not worth it the price the dealership was awful as well as what we purchased the most basic model and the freaking right now payoff is 20,000.00 what a joke

I rented this car for a morning of delivering ~300 newspapers and I was excited when I saw it had start/stop technology, but unfortunately, it was not a good experience. I’m not accustomed to shutting the car off and taking the key out every time I get out to take two or twenty steps and toss a paper, but apparently that is what the designers expect of anyone operating their car. I opened the door around 150 times this morning and every time, there was a loud beeping alarm as the car ‘warned’ me that it was still on. It was audible halfway down the block on quiet residential streets at 4 am because it usually kept going the entire time the door was open. We occasionally hear from customers if our radio’s too loud, so I’m sure if I drove this car regularly complaints would only be a matter of time. Other than the in-your-face beeping, it would unpredictably (about 1 every 8 times) not restart when I got back in, and would ask to be manually restarted. If this were as simple as turning the key, I wouldn’t have minded what I assume were occasional malfunctions of the start/stop system. But instead, the sequence went: put in gear, press gas, notice nothing happens, follow dash instructions to put back in P, turn key, read helpful direction to press brake in order to start car, finally get it started and then—put it back in gear. Sometimes, if I was lucky, I could roll it downhill in neutral and it would remember it was supposed to be running after all. Although, the first time this happened, the sudden lack of power steering could have been an issue. Basically, the start/stop system by itself would be great, but it’s hobbled by so many modern ‘features’ that it renders the car unusable for any kind of door-to-door delivery work which would otherwise be a great fit for the capability. Because a few people couldn’t tell their car was still running, all drivers now suffer every time the door is opened without removing the key. No amount of gas savings could possibly pay me enough to do another morning of work listening to this car blaring away for hours on end. I looked in the manual, I googled, I looked through the settings with the handy steering wheel buttons, but couldn’t find a way to turn the alarm off. Pity—the turn radius was really great.

hate this car wish i could have given it back the day I bought it. It is making me angry every time I drive it and I am stuck with this.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Prices and Market Value

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta had a starting MSRP of around $18,545, with higher trims reaching approximately $26,945 when new. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $14,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Jetta depreciates at a moderate rate, influenced by factors such as mileage, condition, accident history, and the overall demand for used sedans. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and desirable features (like the BeatsAudio system or driver-assistance packages) tend to hold their value better.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is a strong point, especially with the efficient turbocharged engine. Routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. However, repairs on German vehicles can sometimes be more expensive than on domestic or Japanese cars. Overall, the Jetta offers a good balance of affordability and features, making it a cost-effective choice for many buyers. Long-term ownership costs are manageable with consistent maintenance.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta competes with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. The Jetta offers a comfortable ride and a more mature interior design compared to the Civic's sportier feel. The Corolla boasts a stronger reputation for long-term reliability. The Mazda3 offers a more engaging driving experience and a more upscale interior. The Elantra provides excellent value for the money with a long warranty.

In terms of performance, the Jetta's engine is adequate but not class-leading. Its features are competitive, and the available tech is a plus. Reliability is generally good, but the Corolla and Mazda3 might have a slight edge. Price-wise, the Jetta is typically in line with its rivals.

Alternatives to consider include the Mazda3 for its driving dynamics and interior quality or the Toyota Corolla for its proven reliability. The Honda Civic is also a strong contender. If value is a top priority, the Hyundai Elantra is worth considering. The Jetta holds its own, but these alternatives offer compelling strengths.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta a Good Sedan?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is a good choice for buyers seeking a comfortable, fuel-efficient compact sedan with a modern design and available tech features. It's ideal for commuters and small families who prioritize practicality and value. Whether it's worth buying depends on your needs and preferences. A used 2019 Jetta can be a good value, especially if it's well-maintained and has lower mileage. Higher trims like the SEL or SEL Premium offer more features and a more luxurious experience. Consider inspecting the infotainment system and checking for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. It's a worthy contender in its class, especially if you appreciate German engineering and a comfortable ride.

I purchased my 2019 Jetta R-Line brand new with 27 miles

I purchased my 2019 Jetta R-Line brand new with 27 miles on the odometer in June of 2020. As of this review I have owned the vehicle nearly 5 years. My car now has 57,000 miles on it. I have never experienced any mechanical failures. The vehicle still has the factory battery, brake pads, and rotors. I have only replaced the tires and cabin air filter. Aside from that, routine maintenance including oil changes every 7,500 miles (despite VW calling for 10k interval), and flushing the coolant and brake fluids around 50k miles. My car is comfortable albeit a little small for a man of my stature. It's excellent on gas and handles like a dream. I have gotten compliments on it's looks since day one. The cold weather package is excellent and essential up here in the northeast. I paid 20k for the car brand new and its proven to be an excellent value. My only complaints, the stock sound system is not horrible but it's not great. Also, the driver seat is beginning to have cracks in the leather. I'm very satisfied with this vehicle. I hope this one lasts a while but I will check out VW first for my next vehicle purchase.

It will correct steering if you drift out of the lane, it had heated and COOLED seats, adaptive cruise control, automatic headlights and highbeams are also auto, etc. There's more but I can't list it all.

Best vehicle I've owned

I bought a 2019 Jetta SEL in July of 2018 right when it came out. I have now owned this vehicle for 5 years and put 116,000 miles on it. I love it. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have had no major issues other than a bolt coming lose around 69k miles near the timing belt which was under warranty and fixed with no charge. On long trips I have gotten up to 53 MPG but average high 30's day to day. I cannot say enough great things about this vehicle.

Incredibly durable

I put 175,000 miles on my 2019 Hanbanero Orange Jetta R-Line. Unfortunately it was totaled in an accident but I have no doubts the car would have made it at least 50k more. The only repair I had to make was the heater/ac fan which cost 70 dollars at NAPA and took 5 minutes to change myself. No engine, transmission issues at all. Zero problems. The car still drove and sounded like it did on day 1! I regularly averaged 35-40mpg. Best car I’ve ever owned. I will miss it for sure!

Great car with hi tech features!

Great car with all of the hi tech features that I need such as blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic avoidance. Being a senior citizen I also like the winter package of heated seats and steering wheel. The remote start also is greatly appreciated! Gas mileage is also good and I like the engine stop feature at stop lights to save emissions!

Great Car For the Money

I have 2 2019 Jetta SELs. One white with cinnamon interior and the other Blue with cinnamon interior. One was leased for my daughter while in college and the other was mine. Both cars have performed very well and no mechanical issues other than the fact I got a flat tire once and realized I had no spare tire, that it was optional on the Jetta. The gas mileage was excellent and on a recent long trip I was getting 45 mpg for long stretches of the trip. Both are leases and I am trading one in for a 2022 Tiguan SE [I am tired of getting in a car as I get older], but the other lease I will encourage my daughter to buy out because there is no way she can get such a reliable vehicle for such a price today.

Really like the styling, gas mileage great!

Really fun to drive, like the looks much better than the "Catfish-mouthed " vehicles that seem so common. Great technology, and nearly 40 MPG in mixed driving without the extra cost and complexity of the hybrids. Quite comfortable, and roomy enough for my wife and I to do some long road trips.
