The 2016 Ford Flex is a distinctive full-size crossover SUV that defies conventional styling with its boxy, wagon-like design. Produced from 2009 to 2019, it offered a unique alternative to minivans and traditional SUVs. Key trims include the SE, SEL, and Limited. The 2016 Flex stands out for its spacious three-row seating, retro-inspired design, and available turbocharged engine. New, it ranged roughly from $30,000 to $45,000. Its popularity stems from its comfort, practicality, and distinctive appearance.
The Good

The 2016 Ford Flex offers a compelling blend of practicality and style. Performance is solid, especially with the EcoBoost engine. It provides comfortable seating for up to seven passengers. The Flex's unique design appeals to those seeking something different, while its spaciousness and cargo capacity satisfy practical needs. While not known for exceptional fuel economy, it offers good value for its size and features. Reliability is generally considered average.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 Ford Flex include its somewhat dated infotainment system and fuel economy that isn't class-leading, especially with the turbo engine. Some owners have reported issues with the water pump and potential for premature rusting, particularly in areas with road salt. Check for proper maintenance records and rust during pre-purchase inspections. The blind spots can also be larger than some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2016 Ford Flex Have?

The 2016 Ford Flex, like other model years, has experienced some reported problems. One frequently mentioned issue is with the water pump, which can fail prematurely, potentially leading to engine overheating and costly repairs. Owners should listen for unusual noises and monitor coolant levels. Some owners have also reported issues with the MyFord Touch infotainment system, although Ford attempted to address these through software updates. Rust can be a concern, particularly in regions with heavy road salt usage; inspect the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion. Recalls for the 2016 model year have included issues related to airbag deployment and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns often center around the EcoBoost engine, which, while powerful, can be more susceptible to carbon buildup on the intake valves if not properly maintained. Transmission issues are less common but have been reported by some owners. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to mitigating potential problems and ensuring the long-term reliability of the 2016 Ford Flex. Check the NHTSA website for updated recall information.

How long will the 2016 Ford Flex last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Ford Flex can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. The EcoBoost engine, if not properly cared for (regular oil changes, fuel system cleaning), can experience carbon buildup issues. Suspension components and bushings may require replacement over time. The body structure is generally solid, but rust prevention is crucial in colder climates. Overall, the Flex is a durable vehicle when properly maintained, but neglecting maintenance can shorten its lifespan.

Gary D.
While the car gets the job done, it is not the most visually appealing vehicle on the road. The ride is great however.
Emily S.
The Flex is a great vehicle in terms of space and comfort, but the gas mileage is a bit disappointing. We were hoping for better fuel efficiency.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Ford Flex offers a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and Ford’s SYNC system. Higher trims offer the MyFord Touch infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a premium Sony audio system.
Available driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. Safety features encompass standard airbags, antilock brakes, and stability control.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally give the 2016 Flex a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary, and you should consult their website for specific tests. Optional features further enhance the tech and safety suite, such as a multi-panel sunroof, which not only adds appeal but helps let in plenty of natural light. The infotainment, while functional, is known to be slow or outdated for some drivers used to newer interfaces.

2016 Ford Flex Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Ford Flex ranged from approximately $30,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $20,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and trim level. The Flex has depreciated significantly due to its age and changing consumer preferences towards newer SUV designs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's maintenance history, accident record, and overall condition. Models with the EcoBoost engine and higher trims tend to hold their value slightly better.

2016 Ford Flex Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Ford Flex is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typical for a full-size SUV. Fuel economy, especially with the EcoBoost engine, isn't exceptional, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance costs are average, but potential water pump issues and other repairs can increase long-term costs. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is crucial to prevent expensive repairs down the line. Overall, the Flex isn't the most economical choice but offers good value for its size and features if properly maintained.

2016 Ford Flex Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Ford Flex is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Ford Flex Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2016 Ford Flex competes with vehicles like the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander. In terms of performance, the Flex with the EcoBoost engine offers strong acceleration, rivaling the Highlander's V6. Feature-wise, the Flex provides comparable amenities, although its infotainment system is somewhat dated compared to newer models from Honda and Toyota. Reliability is generally considered average, falling slightly behind the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, which are known for their dependability.
Price-wise, the Flex often offers a more affordable option on the used market. The Chevrolet Traverse presents a similar size and feature set but may have a slightly more conventional SUV appearance. The Honda Pilot excels in fuel economy and resale value. The Toyota Highlander is known for its reliability and refined driving experience. Depending on priorities, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot might be better choices for buyers prioritizing reliability and fuel efficiency, while the Flex stands out for its unique styling and spaciousness at a potentially lower price point. The Dodge Durango is another similar alternative to consider.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Ford Flex a Good Wagon?

The 2016 Ford Flex is ideal for families needing three-row seating and ample cargo space who appreciate its distinctive styling. It's worth buying used if you can find one in good condition with a solid maintenance history. The SEL or Limited trims offer the best balance of features and value. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to check for potential water pump issues or rust. If reliability and fuel economy are top priorities, alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot might be better choices. However, the Flex offers a unique blend of practicality and style at a competitive price, especially on the used market.
