The Subaru Tribeca, produced from 2006 to 2014, was Subaru's entry into the mid-size SUV market. The 2014 model, the final year, came solely in a crossover body style. Key trims included the Premium and Limited. New, it ranged roughly from $34,000 to $36,000. It stood out for its standard all-wheel drive and horizontally opposed "boxer" engine, a Subaru hallmark. The symmetrical AWD provides superior handling and traction. The comfortable ride and available seven-passenger seating added to its appeal.
The Good

The 2014 Tribeca offers confident performance with its strong engine and standard all-wheel drive. It provides a comfortable ride and relatively spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. Emotionally, the Subaru brand's reputation for safety and reliability, coupled with the Tribeca's unique styling, offers peace of mind and a distinctive presence. Although reliability isn't outstanding, it offers a decent value on the used market.

The Bad

The 2014 Subaru Tribeca's weaknesses include its polarizing styling, which was a point of contention for many. Fuel economy is below average for its class. The third-row seating is cramped, limiting its usability for larger families. Reliability can be a concern, so inspect for maintenance records and potential issues with the transmission and engine cooling system. Some owners have reported higher than average repair costs.

What Problems Does the 2014 Subaru Tribeca Have?

The 2014 Subaru Tribeca, and the model years leading up to it, have some frequently reported problems. One of the more common concerns revolves around the transmission. Some owners have experienced slipping or rough shifting, particularly at higher mileage. Engine cooling system issues, such as leaks from the radiator or hoses, have also been reported. These can lead to overheating if not addressed promptly. Some owners have cited issues with the power steering system, including leaks and pump failures.

While there weren't any significant recalls specific to the 2014 model year, it's always advisable to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any updated recall information. Long-term reliability can be a concern, especially with higher mileage vehicles. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigating potential problems. The horizontally opposed engine design, while offering benefits in terms of balance and handling, can also make some repairs more complex and costly compared to inline engines. It's recommended to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic before buying a used 2014 Tribeca.

How long will the 2014 Subaru Tribeca last?

A well-maintained 2014 Subaru Tribeca can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more, translating to 12-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance. Neglecting services like oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. The engine and transmission are key areas of concern as the vehicle ages. Watch for oil leaks, overheating, and transmission slippage. Rust can also be a factor in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Overall, with proper care, the Tribeca can offer reasonable long-term durability, but it's not known for exceptional longevity like some other SUVs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Subaru Tribeca came with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a rearview camera, which was relatively novel for that era. The entertainment system featured a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, providing good sound quality. The Limited trim added a navigation system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles; it lacked advanced features like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning.

Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and a full complement of airbags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2014 Tribeca good ratings in most crash tests, providing reassurance regarding its structural integrity. However, it is important to note that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2014. While it was considered a safe vehicle at the time, newer vehicles offer more comprehensive safety systems. Optional features included a sunroof and heated front seats.

The 2014 Tribeca's technology suite reflects the standards of its time. While it may not offer the advanced features found in modern vehicles, it provided a solid foundation of safety and entertainment for its era.

2014 Subaru Tribeca Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Subaru Tribeca ranged from approximately $34,000 to $36,000 depending on the trim level. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, varying based on condition, mileage, and location. The Tribeca has depreciated significantly due to its age, polarizing styling, and concerns about reliability. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, and mileage. A clean title and complete service records will improve its value. Compared to some of its rivals, the Tribeca's resale value is generally lower, making it a potentially affordable option for budget-conscious buyers but a less desirable choice for those concerned with retaining value.

2014 Subaru Tribeca Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Subaru Tribeca are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are higher than average due to its relatively poor fuel economy. Maintenance can be moderately expensive, especially if repairs are needed on the engine or transmission. Subaru parts can sometimes be pricier than those for domestic brands. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than average due to potential maintenance and repair issues. The Tribeca is generally not considered an economical vehicle to own compared to some of its competitors, particularly in terms of fuel and potential repair expenses.

2014 Subaru Tribeca Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Subaru Tribeca is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Subaru Tribeca Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Subaru Tribeca competed against mid-size SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Tribeca's engine was adequate, but its fuel economy lagged behind the competition. Feature-wise, it offered a decent set of amenities for its time, but its infotainment system was less advanced than some rivals. Reliability is where the Tribeca falls short compared to the Highlander and Pilot, which are known for their dependability. The Pathfinder offered similar reliability issues. Price-wise, the Tribeca is now more affordable on the used market than the Highlander or Pilot.

Alternatives to the 2014 Tribeca include the Toyota Highlander, which offers superior reliability and resale value, albeit at a higher price point. The Honda Pilot provides a more spacious interior and better fuel economy. The Mazda CX-9 offers a more engaging driving experience. Given the Tribeca's reliability concerns and polarizing styling, the Highlander and Pilot are generally better choices for most buyers. If budget is a primary concern and you're willing to accept potential maintenance risks, the Tribeca could be considered, but a thorough inspection is essential.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Subaru Tribeca a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Subaru Tribeca is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize all-wheel drive and are willing to accept potential reliability risks. It's best suited for those who appreciate Subaru's unique design and don't require a spacious third row. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on the vehicle's condition and maintenance history. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Buying a used 2014 Tribeca is preferable, as new models are no longer available. The Premium trim offers a good balance of features without the added cost of the Limited. If reliability and resale value are paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot.

OUTSTANDING CAR AND DEALERSHIP

THIS IS THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVERY OWNED. IT HAS ALL THE FEATURES I WANTED AND GIVES A GREAT RIDE. THIS IS MY THIRD SUBARU AND I WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER BUYING ANOTHER BRAND. THEY ARE BUILT TO LAST AND ARE VERY DEPENDABLE. THE CARS ARE SOLID AND YOU CAN TELL THAT BY OPENING AND CLOSING THE DOORS. SUBARU CARS NEVER WEAR OUT. NOTICE HOW MANY YOU SEE ON THE ROAD THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND A LONG TIME. IT IS ALMOST A "CULT" THAT YOU BELONG TO. TROCALLI SUBARU IN CUMMING, GEORGIA IS THE ONLY DEALER THAT I WOULD BUY FROM. IT IS WHERE "FRIENDS SEND THEIR FRIENDS" THEY GIVE YOU A "GOOD DEAL" AND GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO BE SURE YOU ARE VERY SATISFIED. THE PARTS DEPARTMENT GETS WHAT YOU NEED QUICKLY. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS UNBEATABLE AND OFFERS QUICK TURN AROUND. THERE IS NO BETTER DEALERSHIP FOR SUBARU IN THE ATLANTA METRO. SO DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T EVEN BOTHER GOING ANYWHERE ELSE!
