Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Subaru Tribeca is a mid-size crossover SUV that aimed to blend Subaru's signature all-wheel drive with family-friendly practicality. Produced from 2006 to 2014, the Tribeca offered seating for up to seven passengers. Key trims included base, Limited, and sometimes a premium trim. New, it ranged roughly from $30,000 to $38,000. The distinctive (and sometimes controversial) styling and standard AWD helped it stand out. However, it never achieved widespread popularity.
The Good

The 2008 Tribeca offers Subaru's renowned symmetrical all-wheel drive, appealing to practical buyers seeking secure handling in various conditions. Its comfortable ride and available third-row seating cater to families. The powerful 3.6L engine provides decent performance, adding an emotional appeal for those who enjoy spirited driving. Despite some quirks, Subarus generally have a reputation for longevity.

The Bad

The 2008 Tribeca's weaknesses include its polarizing exterior styling and relatively poor fuel economy. The third-row seating is cramped and best suited for children. Earlier models had some transmission issues. Some owners reported higher-than-average maintenance costs. The quirky interior design also wasn't universally loved. Pre-purchase inspection is recommended.

What Problems Does the 2008 Subaru Tribeca Have?

The 2008 Subaru Tribeca had some reported problems, although generally considered more reliable than the 2006-2007 models. Common issues included excessive oil consumption, which is a concern with some Subaru engines. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or failure, especially at higher mileage. It's critical to verify if the transmission fluid has been regularly changed.

Recalls for the 2008 Tribeca were relatively limited but it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to safety or emissions. Other reported problems involved the navigation system (if equipped) and occasional electrical glitches.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the engine and transmission. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is crucial to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. The AWD system is generally robust, but it's essential to inspect the differentials for leaks or unusual noises. Some owners also reported issues with the rear suspension components over time. Checking for corrosion, especially in areas with road salt, is also advisable.

How long will the 2008 Subaru Tribeca last?

With good maintenance, a 2008 Subaru Tribeca can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Expect 15-20 years of service with proper care. Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, especially regarding oil changes and transmission servicing. Weaknesses over time include potential oil leaks, especially around the head gaskets (common for Subaru engines), and wear in the suspension components. Rust can also be a factor, particularly in regions with salted roads. Regular inspections are vital to address any developing issues early on.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Subaru Tribeca offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility, automatic climate control, and cruise control. Higher trims (Limited) could be equipped with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a premium audio system. Optional features included a navigation system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but it did offer standard antilock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC). Safety features included front airbags, side airbags, and side curtain airbags.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA provide insights into the Tribeca's safety performance. It generally performed well in frontal and side impact tests. It's important to consult the official IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific crash test results for the 2008 model year.

While not as advanced as current vehicles, the 2008 Tribeca provided a solid foundation of safety and convenience features for its era. Its all-wheel-drive system also contributed to enhanced stability and control in various driving conditions.

2008 Subaru Tribeca Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Subaru Tribeca ranged from approximately $30,000 to $38,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $10,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Tribeca has experienced significant depreciation due to its polarizing styling and relatively low demand compared to other SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage and a clean service record command higher prices.

2008 Subaru Tribeca Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Subaru Tribeca tends to be moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel economy is below average, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than some competitors due to the Subaru's horizontally opposed engine design, which can make some repairs more complex. Long-term reliability can be good with proactive maintenance, but neglecting service can lead to expensive repairs. It's not the most economical choice, especially compared to more fuel-efficient SUVs.

2008 Subaru Tribeca Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Subaru Tribeca is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Subaru Tribeca Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Subaru Tribeca competed with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Mazda CX-9. In terms of performance, the Tribeca's 3.6L engine was competitive, but its fuel economy lagged behind the Highlander and Pilot. Feature-wise, it offered comparable amenities, but its styling was more polarizing. Reliability is generally good, but some owners reported issues that were less common in the Toyota and Honda.

Price-wise, used Tribecas are often more affordable than comparable Highlanders or Pilots, making them potentially attractive to budget-conscious buyers. However, the lower resale value reflects the Tribeca's perceived drawbacks.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Highlander, which offers superior reliability and resale value. The Honda Pilot provides more spacious third-row seating and better fuel economy. The Mazda CX-9 delivers a more engaging driving experience. While the Tribeca offers standard AWD, potential buyers should weigh its pros and cons against these alternatives, considering their specific needs and priorities. If AWD is not a top priority, a front-wheel drive crossover might be a more economical option.

Ranks #430 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Subaru Tribeca a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Subaru Tribeca is ideal for buyers seeking a used SUV with standard all-wheel drive on a budget. It's worth buying if you prioritize AWD, are comfortable with its styling, and find a well-maintained example with a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on the 2008 model year or later, as they addressed some of the earlier model issues. Avoid if fuel economy is a primary concern or if you need a truly spacious third row. Consider a Limited trim for added features. Ultimately, it's a decent value proposition for specific needs, but not a universally recommended choice.

Happy in Mid-coast Maine

This vehicle has lots of room for a tall guy. The AWD is far superior to the competitions. I have almost 200,000 miles on it and it hasn't cost me much to maintain besides the routine maintenance.

Reliable and high quality after 10 years

We just purchased a 2008 Tribeca with 120,000 miles. It seems to have held up extremely well and the initial experience with it has been very good. A very well built car with a solid and powerful engine. The interior design in the front cabin is sharp and logical.

Excellant car for the money.

Personally glad that I have this car as my primary car. It's great in the snow and all weather. Gas mileage is not all that great but prefect for a car to get back and forth with in serious comfort. Sound system is great and rides beautiful.

Oldie, but a Goodie

Overall great car. I took a risk and purchased an older model, but I was really surprised on how many features that was included considering how old it is. As far as reliably so far it?s ran great. I mainly purchased this car for commuting to and from work and was needing something with All Wheel Drive for winter driving. I definitely would recommend this vehicle.

Super smooth and perfect size

I have three kids 6 and under. This is a seven seater car so it is the perfect mid point. Has a DVD player, GPS sytem, sun roof, and all the seats are easy to fold up and down depending on the need at the time. On top of that, since it isn't a full size suv it doesn't cost $50 to fill up every time (given I am in Missouri so gas isn't super high anyway).
