The Good
The 2009 R-Class offers a blend of comfort and space. Its luxurious cabin and smooth ride appeal emotionally, while its practicality as a people-mover with available all-wheel drive suits practical buyers. Performance is adequate, especially with the V8 options. The design, although polarizing, is distinctive. However, reliability can be a concern.
The Bad
The 2009 R-Class has potential weaknesses. Air suspension problems are common and costly to repair. Electrical issues can also arise. Fuel economy is poor, especially with the larger engines. Be wary of deferred maintenance, as repairs can be expensive due to the vehicle's complexity and Mercedes-Benz parts prices.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2009 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Have?
Recalls have been issued for various concerns, including fuel filter flange cracking, which can cause fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's systems, making it costly to maintain as it ages. The 7-speed automatic transmission can also experience issues over time, potentially requiring repairs or replacement. Regular maintenance and addressing problems promptly are crucial to mitigate long-term reliability concerns. Neglecting maintenance can lead to a cascade of expensive repairs.
How long will the 2009 Mercedes-Benz R-Class last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included cruise control and available park assist. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), traction control, and a suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags. Optional safety features included blind-spot monitoring.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) varied depending on the specific test. Generally, the R-Class performed well in frontal and side-impact tests, providing a good level of occupant protection. However, it's essential to consult the latest NHTSA and IIHS reports for the most accurate and up-to-date crash-test information. The absence of many modern driver-assistance systems is a notable drawback compared to newer vehicles.

How Does the 2009 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Compare to Other Vehicle?
Alternatives to consider include the Acura MDX for its reliability and practicality, the BMW X5 for its sportier driving experience, or the Audi Q7 for its refined interior and technology. A minivan like the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna offers similar passenger capacity with better reliability and fuel economy, albeit without the luxury badge. If reliability and lower running costs are priorities, the R-Class is not the best choice.

Great SUV/Van AlternativePluses - Great head room/leg room front, middle AND third row for 6 foot adults. Long wheelbase, low profile and outstanding suspension give the the R-Class a true car-like ride compared to ANY crossover on the market. Handles more like a large car with no truck-like feel at all. Super quiet ride. Great for hauling 6-7 kids to soccer games, or 4-6 business clients to dinner. Mine has second row captains chairs and I love them. Pleanty of storage with third seat lowered. Many Mercedes bells and whistles that give the car a true luxury feel. A bit light on power, but will satisfy 95% of driving situations. Blind spots are relatively non-existent. Fit and finish and quality of interior materials are excellent. Minuses - Expensive repairs, even if minor (if buying "used", strongly suggest going the Certified Pre Owned route and popping for an extended warranty from Mercedes. It will pay for itself). Gas milage is mediocre at best. The last R-Class year was 2012 and the Nav and bluetooth technology is cumbersome and already out of date. Used R-Class prices are high realtive to competition. Summary - If you're not mini van material, and don't care for the truck-like SUV or Crossover ride, this is the car for you. It's more like a big, fancy, station wagon on the outside with a luxury car interior that can seat 6-7. Side note: I've never kept a car for more than three years. I've had this for six, and If MB was still making them, I would buy another.

Great Car, seat ergonomics could have been better.Obviously the car name suggests that it is a great Car, and a great car it is indeed. The driver seat ergonomics could have been better, especially while driving for long durations, one tends to get a back ache. The responsiveness is good on highways, but there is a sluggishness while starting from zero. This does improve a little bit in the S mode, but not really enough. Ride and handling is very good.
