The 2016 BMW M4 is a high-performance coupe and convertible, born from the iconic M3 lineage but designated with a new name for the two-door models. Produced from 2014-2020 (F82/F83 generation), key trims include the base M4 and the more potent M4 GTS. Original pricing ranged from around $65,000 to over $130,000 for the GTS. Its sharp handling, powerful engine, and aggressive styling make it a popular choice for driving enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2016 BMW M4 offers thrilling performance, a stylish design, and a comfortable (for a sports car) interior. For emotional buyers, it provides a visceral driving experience. For practical buyers, it's a relatively reliable daily driver (when properly maintained) with decent fuel economy for its class, and strong resale value making it a reasonable financial decision.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 BMW M4 include potential crank hub failure on unmodified engines, which can be costly to repair. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electronic components. Suspension components can also wear prematurely with aggressive driving. Also, the ride can be firm, especially on rough roads.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW M4 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 BMW M4, and other years in the F82/F83 generation, often revolve around the S55 engine's crank hub. This is a known weakness where the friction-fit crank hub can slip, leading to timing issues and potentially catastrophic engine damage. While not every M4 experiences this issue, it's a significant concern, particularly for those increasing engine output via tuning. Many owners proactively replace the crank hub with a pinned version as a preventative measure.
Other reported issues include some failures with the dual-clutch transmission (DCT), though this is less common than the crank hub issue. Some owners also mention problems with the iDrive infotainment system, such as glitches or slow response times. Turbocharger issues have been reported, but this is less widespread.
Recalls for the 2016 M4 have been issued for various issues, including potential fuel leaks and faulty airbags. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with BMW or the NHTSA to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability largely depends on maintenance and driving habits. Addressing potential issues like the crank hub proactively can significantly improve long-term ownership experience.

How long will the 2016 BMW M4 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 BMW M4 can easily surpass 150,000 miles or 10 years of service. Regular oil changes (more frequent than BMW's recommended intervals), transmission fluid services, and addressing potential issues promptly are crucial. The S55 engine, while powerful, can be sensitive to neglect. Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned crank hub issue. Suspension components, bushings, and seals may require replacement over time, especially with aggressive driving or track use. Rust is generally not a major concern.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 BMW M4 features BMW's iDrive infotainment system, which includes a central display screen, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and smartphone integration (though Apple CarPlay was not standard until later model years). The standard sound system is good, but the optional Harman Kardon surround sound system offers a significant upgrade.
Standard driver-assistance features include a rearview camera, parking sensors, and automatic high beams. Optional features include lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and traction control.
Crash-test ratings for the 2016 BMW 4 Series (which the M4 is based on) from the IIHS are generally good, with top scores in most categories. The NHTSA provides a 5-star overall safety rating for the 4 Series coupe and convertible. It's important to note that these ratings apply to the 4 Series in general, and while the M4 shares the same basic structure, its unique performance characteristics may influence real-world crash performance.

2016 BMW M4 Prices and Market Value

The 2016 BMW M4 had a starting MSRP of around $65,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $35,000 to $55,000, depending on mileage, condition, and options. The M4 depreciates, but it holds its value relatively well compared to some other luxury performance cars. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially mechanical health), options (like the Competition Package), and service history. Well-maintained examples with desirable options command higher prices.

2016 BMW M4 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 BMW M4 is not an economical car to own. Insurance costs are higher than average due to its performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with spirited driving. Maintenance, particularly at a BMW dealership, can be expensive. Repairs, especially if the crank hub fails or the DCT needs servicing, can be very costly. Long-term ownership requires a proactive approach to maintenance to mitigate potential issues and minimize expenses.

How Does the 2016 BMW M4 Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2016 BMW M4's key rivals include the Audi RS5, Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, and Cadillac ATS-V. In terms of performance, the M4 offers a good balance of power and handling, although the AMG C63 boasts a more powerful V8. Feature-wise, the M4 is competitive, with a similar level of technology and comfort. Reliability is where the M4 falls slightly behind, particularly compared to the Audi RS5. The AMG C63 also has its own reliability quirks. Price-wise, the M4 is generally comparable to its rivals.
Alternatives to the M4 include the Porsche 718 Cayman/Boxster, which offers superior handling, but less practicality. The Lexus RC F is another option, known for its reliability, but it's less engaging to drive. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 provides more raw power for the money, but lacks the M4's refinement. Depending on individual priorities, the RS5 might be a slightly better choice for reliability, while the C63 appeals to those seeking a V8 experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 BMW M4 a Good Coupe?

The 2016 BMW M4 is ideal for driving enthusiasts who prioritize performance, style, and a sporty driving experience. It's worth buying if you're aware of the potential crank hub issue and are prepared to address it proactively. A used M4 is generally the best option, as new models have depreciated. Consider an M4 with the Competition Package for improved handling and power, but be prepared for a slightly firmer ride. Thoroughly inspect any used M4, paying close attention to its service history and overall condition. Pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended by a qualified BMW mechanic.

Just bought used M4

IMO one of the most beautiful cars in and out. Has a stiff ride with great power. Many many control options from stereo to performance. Only drawback is not a lot of interior storage.

Best performance for value

Love the versatility of this sports car. Track and travel worthy. Comfortably fits larger people. Love the hard top convertible. Carbon ceramic brakes amazing. Trim and paint color very nice. Styling hasn't changed much over 5 years of F83.

This is one fun-to-drive car!

I’ve owned my M4 since 2016 and enjoyed every drive. I especially look forward to warmer temperatures when I get to drop the top and enjoy open-air driving at its best. This car has been very reliable with a flat tire being the only need for repairs. On the down side, the back seat is way too small for full-size humans. But then, I didn’t buy this car for its people-mover abilities.

It grows on me

Quite comfortable with exceptional acceleration and handling for a 4,000 lbs convertible.. Tends to gather quite a few looks. My test drive last summer was with the top down. I purchased this winter with the top up. Surprisingly loud rear tire noise on concrete roads, more like a roar on rough worn concrete. Relatively quiet on newer asphalt. Definitely takes some getting used to. Exhaust note has more of a rattley sound when warming up opposed to a nice rumble. That is unfortunately the first comments I get from guys when they hear it crank up. Considering all the electronics and multiple extra safety options my car has I am glad it has the CPO warranty.

From a Audi RS5 to this!

I was skeptical going from a v8 450hp car to a 425hp TTv6 but wow I'm impressed. The engine sound actually blows away the RS5 --the rear wheel drive vs. ALL wheel makes it feel like you are strapped to a rocket.
