GM Recall: Nearly 462,000 SUVs and Trucks Affected by Transmission Defect

General Motors (GM) has issued a recall affecting 462,000 diesel-powered SUVs and pickup trucks due to a faulty transmission control valve that can cause the rear wheels to lock up, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall applies to various models, including Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Cadillac Escalade, and others from the 2020–2022 model years.

Details of the Recall

According to documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the transmission control valve in these vehicles may wear out over time, resulting in a gradual loss of pressure. This can cause harsh shifting and, in rare cases, momentary rear-wheel lockup.

One driver of a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 reported a near-accident while towing an 8,000-pound trailer. The truck experienced a violent downshift, causing the vehicle to skid and nearly jackknife with the trailer.

Affected Models

The recall impacts the following GM vehicles:

  • Chevrolet Silverado: 2020-2022 (1500, 2500, 3500 models)
  • GMC Sierra: 2020-2022 (1500, 2500, 3500 models)
  • Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV: 2021
  • Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban: 2021
  • GMC Yukon and Yukon XL: 2021

Remedy and Owner Notifications

To address the issue, GM dealers will install updated transmission control module software free of charge. The software will monitor the valve and detect excess wear up to 10,000 miles before a potential lockup. If wear is detected, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear to prevent wheel lockup, which typically occurs during downshifting from eighth gear.

Notification letters will be sent to affected owners starting December 9, 2024. Owners can also contact GM’s customer service or NHTSA for more information.
