Key trims included the base DTS, Luxury I, Luxury II, and Performance. The 2009 DTS was known for its spacious interior, smooth ride, and powerful V8 engine. New pricing ranged from around $45,000 to $55,000. It was popular due to its comfortable ride and stately presence.
The Good

The 2009 Cadillac DTS offers strong V8 performance and a plush, comfortable ride – appealing to those seeking a classic American luxury experience. It's spacious and offers a smooth ride that is ideal for long road trips. It is also reasonably priced on the used market, offering good value. For the practical buyer, it's a spacious and comfortable vehicle. For the emotional buyer, it provides classic Cadillac styling and a sense of prestige.

The Bad

The 2009 Cadillac DTS has some potential weaknesses. Be aware of potential issues with the Northstar V8 engine, including head gasket failures. Fuel economy is not a strong point. What Problems Does the 2009 Cadillac DTS Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Cadillac DTS often revolve around the 4.6L Northstar V8 engine. Head gasket failure is a relatively common and potentially expensive issue, particularly in older models. Symptoms include overheating, coolant loss, and white smoke from the exhaust. Electrical issues can also occur, including problems with sensors, the instrument panel, and the climate control system. Some owners have reported issues with the suspension, including worn-out shocks and struts, leading to a less comfortable ride.
Recalls for the 2009 Cadillac DTS have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks and problems with the brake system. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability concerns mainly relate to the Northstar engine and the complexity of the car's electrical systems. Regular maintenance, including oil changes and cooling system flushes, is crucial to mitigate potential problems. The 2006-2008 model years are generally considered to be slightly more prone to certain issues compared to the later 2009-2011 models, but all years should be thoroughly inspected before purchase.

How long will the 2009 Cadillac DTS last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Cadillac DTS can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many examples on the used market currently have over 150,000 miles and are still running. The key to longevity is consistent maintenance, particularly regular oil changes and cooling system services to prevent Northstar engine issues.
Long-term durability weaknesses include potential head gasket failure (as mentioned previously), wear and tear on suspension components (shocks, struts), and degradation of interior materials. Electrical gremlins can also emerge over time. Well-maintained examples with documented service history are more likely to provide extended service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Cadillac DTS offered a range of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included OnStar, a CD player, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims added features like a premium sound system, heated and cooled front seats, and rain-sensing wipers.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included rear parking sensors and available adaptive cruise control. Safety features included antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control.
Optional features included a navigation system, sunroof, and upgraded leather upholstery.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good results for frontal and side impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may have conducted limited testing. Check their websites for specific ratings. While the DTS lacked some of the advanced safety tech found in newer cars, it offered a solid level of protection for its era.

2009 Cadillac DTS Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Cadillac DTS had a price range of approximately $45,000 to $55,000, depending on the trim level and options. On today's used market, you can expect to find examples ranging from around $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.
The DTS has depreciated significantly due to its age, mileage, and the general depreciation curve of luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options (like the navigation system or upgraded sound system). Cars with documented service records and low mileage will command higher prices.

2009 Cadillac DTS Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Cadillac DTS is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for a large sedan. Fuel costs can be high due to the V8 engine's fuel consumption. Maintenance and repair costs can be above average, especially if head gasket repairs are needed. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly issues. Overall, due to potential engine and electrical repairs, the DTS is not the most economical choice for long-term ownership.

Insurance for a 2009 Cadillac DTS is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Cadillac DTS Compare to Other Truck?

The 2009 Cadillac DTS competed with other full-size luxury sedans like the Lexus LS, Lincoln Town Car, and Chrysler 300. In terms of performance, the DTS offered a potent V8 engine, but its fuel economy was less impressive than some rivals. The Lexus LS offered superior reliability and a more refined driving experience, while the Lincoln Town Car provided similar levels of comfort and a slightly lower price point. The Chrysler 300 offered a more modern design and available HEMI V8 power.
In terms of features, the DTS was competitive, but the Lexus LS typically offered more advanced technology. Regarding reliability, the DTS falls short of Lexus's reputation. If reliability is a top priority, the Lexus LS is a better choice. If you are looking for a similar level of comfort at a potentially lower price and are less concerned about cutting-edge tech or ultimate reliability, the Lincoln Town Car could be considered. The Chrysler 300 offers a more modern alternative with available V8 power and bolder styling.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Cadillac DTS a Good Truck?

The 2009 Cadillac DTS is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable and spacious traditional American luxury sedan at an affordable price point. It's worth buying if you appreciate its classic styling and prioritize ride comfort over fuel efficiency or cutting-edge technology.
It's best to buy a used DTS with a well-documented maintenance history and preferably one that has already had its head gaskets replaced. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Northstar V8 engines. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition are preferable, but be prepared for potential maintenance costs. Avoid neglecting maintenance on this vehicle.
