The 2002 Mazda Millenia was a mid-size luxury sedan produced from 1993 to 2002 (as the Eunos 800 and Mazda Xedos 9 outside of North America). It's known for its sleek styling and available Miller-cycle V6 engine. Key trims included the base model, S, and Premium. New pricing ranged from roughly $27,000 to $34,000. It stood out due to its advanced engine technology and near-luxury features at a competitive price point.
The Good

The 2002 Millenia offers a comfortable ride and distinctive styling that appeals to emotional buyers. Practically, it provides a good value for its features. The Miller-cycle engine, while complex, offers decent performance. Reliability can be good with proper maintenance. The spacious interior and comfortable seats enhance the overall driving experience.

The Bad

The Miller-cycle engine, while innovative, can be complex and costly to repair. Watch out for oil leaks and potential issues with the supercharger (if equipped). Some owners have reported electrical problems and issues with the automatic transmission. Parts availability can be limited, making some repairs more challenging and expensive.

What Problems Does the 2002 Mazda Millenia Have?

The 2002 Mazda Millenia, particularly models equipped with the Miller-cycle engine, is known for several frequently reported problems. Oil leaks are a common concern, especially as the engine ages. The supercharger on the 2.3L engine is a potential point of failure, leading to expensive repairs. Automatic transmission issues, including rough shifting or slipping, have also been reported.
Electrical problems, such as issues with the power windows, door locks, and climate control, are not uncommon. Some owners have reported problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Parts availability for the Miller-cycle engine and other Millenia-specific components can be a challenge, potentially increasing repair costs. Rust can also be an issue in regions with harsh winters. Recalls were issued for earlier model years for issues like fuel leaks and seatbelt problems, but the 2002 model year generally had fewer recalls. However, it still inherits the long-term reliability concerns associated with the complex engineering of the Millenia.

How long will the 2002 Mazda Millenia last?

With proper maintenance, a 2002 Mazda Millenia can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many examples are still on the road after 20+ years, but their longevity heavily depends on diligent upkeep. Regular oil changes, timely transmission services, and addressing cooling system issues are crucial. The Miller-cycle engine's complexity contributes to potential long-term weaknesses; supercharger failures and oil leaks become increasingly common as the vehicle ages. Suspension components and rubber bushings may also require replacement over time. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Mazda Millenia offered a decent array of technology and features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM stereo with a cassette player. Higher trims offered a CD player and a Bose audio system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, but some models included cruise control.
Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control (available on some trims), dual front airbags, and side-impact airbags. Optional features included a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated seats, and automatic climate control.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2002 Mazda Millenia are available, but specific ratings vary depending on the test and agency. Generally, it performed reasonably well in frontal crash tests for its class, but side-impact protection might not be as advanced as newer vehicles. The technology is outdated, so features like smartphone integration and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are not available. Key tech at the time centered around audio and climate control, not the sophisticated tech found in modern vehicles.

2002 Mazda Millenia Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Mazda Millenia ranged from approximately $27,000 to $34,000, depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, with condition, mileage, and location being key factors. The Millenia has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, complexity, and reputation for potential maintenance issues. Resale value is primarily influenced by its condition, mileage, and whether it has the desirable Miller-cycle engine. Models with well-documented maintenance records and in excellent cosmetic condition command higher prices. The limited demand for older luxury sedans also contributes to lower resale values.

2002 Mazda Millenia Cost of Ownership

The 2002 Mazda Millenia can be costly to own due to potential maintenance and repair expenses, particularly for models with the Miller-cycle engine. Insurance costs are moderate, depending on the driver's record and location. Fuel economy is average for its class. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to the potential for complex repairs and limited parts availability. Long-term ownership costs are primarily driven by the need for preventative maintenance and the potential for expensive repairs, making it less economical compared to more mainstream vehicles.

How Does the 2002 Mazda Millenia Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2002 Mazda Millenia competed with mid-size luxury sedans like the Acura TL, Lexus ES 300, and Infiniti I30. In terms of performance, the Millenia's Miller-cycle engine offered unique technology but didn't necessarily outperform its rivals in overall power or fuel efficiency. Feature-wise, it was comparable, offering similar luxury amenities. However, reliability is where the Millenia falls short compared to the Lexus and Acura. The Lexus ES 300, in particular, is known for its superior reliability and lower long-term maintenance costs.
In terms of price, the Millenia was often more affordable than the Lexus and Acura when new, and this price difference is even more pronounced on the used market. However, the potential for higher repair costs can offset the initial savings. A similar alternative, if you prioritize unique styling and features, might be a Buick Park Avenue, which offers similar comfort and features with generally better reliability. If reliability is paramount, the Lexus ES 300 is a better choice, even if it costs a bit more upfront. The Acura TL offers a sportier driving experience with good reliability. The Infiniti I30 provided similar luxury and features as the Millenia, potentially with slightly better reliability.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Mazda Millenia a Good Sedan?

The 2002 Mazda Millenia is ideal for someone seeking a comfortable and stylish mid-size sedan at a very affordable price point on the used market. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential reliability issues and are prepared for the possibility of higher maintenance costs. It's best to look for well-maintained examples with documented service history, preferably those without the Miller-cycle engine if reliability is a top concern. Given its age, buying is only recommended in used condition. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential to assess its overall condition and identify potential problems before committing to the purchase. If you prioritize reliability above all else, consider alternatives like the Lexus ES 300.

I wish I had a more reliable car

My car was bought from an auction so it has a snowball effect of issues with it that seem to never end so I wish I was able to have a more reliable car, but I think this car was once reliable in its prime days.

Not bad at all!

This car has four wheels and gets ya where ya need to be! With the bonus of being quite a snazzy looking vehicle. I wanted to buy this bad boy but the wife wanted something newer.

Overall great ride

This car was a solid drive and held up well. To the day, everything on the car is nice and sturdy. One down side to this car are that with it being low to the ground, getting in and out of it can be a bit tough and sitting in it can be a bit rough on the back. Also, because it is considered luxury, parts and labor for repairs can be more than other cars.

Mazda Millenia 2002: A Near Luxury Bargain

I have had a Mazda Millenia 2.5 liter V6 since 2002. I purchased a remanufactured transmission for the Millenia at 200,000 miles. At 237,000 miles, the engine is almost perfect: clean and no wear. The catalytic converter has been a problem for at least one hundred thousand miles. The car, when polished, looks as good as any Mazda and as good as many other luxury cars.

Great Deal

I got a 2002 in 2013 with 147,000 miles on it. It handles like a dream and this car can still turn heads. I opened it up and this car can move. If you are looking a luxury toy without the luxury price, this is the car for you. Mazda needs to bring the Millenia back! Iput 250,000 mile on my old Mazda 626 and I will drive this car till it implodes.
