The Good
The 2005 SSR offers a powerful V8 engine, especially in later models, appealing to performance enthusiasts. Its striking retro design provides emotional appeal, while the retractable hardtop adds practicality and comfort. The unique combination of a truck bed and convertible top also appeals to those seeking something different. Reliability is decent, especially with proper maintenance.
The Bad
Weaknesses of the 2005 SSR include limited cargo space in the truck bed, especially with the top down. The retractable top mechanism can be problematic and expensive to repair. Fuel economy is poor due to the V8 engine and its weight. Some owners have reported issues with the rear axle and differential.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2005 Chevrolet SSR Have?
Other potential issues include problems with the power windows and locks, as well as the air conditioning system. Some owners have experienced issues with the fuel system, including fuel pump failures. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters. There have been recalls related to various issues, including potential problems with the fuel tank and brake light switch. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing.
Long-term reliability can be affected by the complexity of the vehicle and the age of its components. Regular maintenance and careful attention to potential problems are essential for keeping an SSR in good condition. The LS2 engine introduced later in the 2005 model year is generally considered more reliable and desirable than the earlier 5.3L engine, though both have their own potential issues.
How long will the 2005 Chevrolet SSR last?
Long-term durability depends on climate and driving conditions. Weaknesses over time include deterioration of rubber components, potential rust, and wear on the suspension and drivetrain. The retractable top requires regular maintenance to prevent costly repairs. The interior plastics can become brittle and prone to cracking over time. Overall, with diligent care, the SSR can provide many years of enjoyable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Built-in Tech & Entertainment: It features an AM/FM radio with a CD player as standard. Optional upgrades included a Bose premium sound system. There is no navigation system or advanced infotainment features like Bluetooth connectivity.
Driver-Assistance Features: Driver-assistance features are minimal. It includes standard cruise control. There are no parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, or lane departure warning systems.
Safety Features: Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control, and dual front airbags. Side airbags were not available.
Optional Features: Optional features were mostly cosmetic, such as chrome wheels, running boards, and woodgrain interior trim.
Crash Test Ratings: The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash test ratings for the SSR are not readily available. Given its age and unique body style, it wasn't subjected to the same rigorous testing as more mainstream vehicles. This is a factor to consider from a safety standpoint. Safety relied primarily on its robust frame and basic safety equipment.

2005 Chevrolet SSR Prices and Market Value
The SSR has depreciated significantly since its original price, but its unique design and limited production numbers have helped it retain some value. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, history of proper maintenance, and the presence of desirable options. LS2-powered models generally command a higher price. Lower mileage and pristine condition are critical for maximizing resale value.

How Does the 2005 Chevrolet SSR Compare to Other Truck?
Performance: The SSR, especially with the LS2 engine, offers good performance, comparable to some sports cars. A similarly priced sports car such as a Corvette would generally outperform it in handling and acceleration.
Features: Its feature set is limited compared to modern vehicles. A comparable luxury convertible like a Mercedes-Benz SLK would offer more advanced technology and comfort features.
Reliability: The SSR's reliability is not as strong as some other GM vehicles of the era, particularly compared to more mainstream trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado. The retractable top is a known weak point.
Price: Used SSRs are currently priced similarly to other niche vehicles of that era.
Alternatives: If looking for a fun convertible, a sports car like the Mazda MX-5 Miata or a BMW Z4 would offer better handling and potentially better reliability. If needing a pickup truck, a Chevrolet Silverado or Ford F-150 would offer more practicality and cargo capacity. The SSR appeals to a specific niche seeking a unique combination of style and limited truck functionality.

Not your grandma's carI drive mine like an old lady for 2 reasons. I want it to last and I hate getting tickets. I have to restrain myself every time I get behind the wheel 🛞 😩 but, it is satisfying in the most soul stimulating way, knowing that at any given moment I can romp on it like a little old lady from Pasadena. 🚀

A fun and unique looking vehicle, but...If you're thinking about buying one know what you are getting into. Chevy and GM inmost cases long ago stopped making parts specifically for the SSR. Trying to find parts can often be a challenge. There is a good network ofSSR owners who can be very helpful as ling as the have the time and desire to be helpful. There are also a few private individules to stock some needed parts, but you have to do your homework to find them . Pray that the retractable hardtop doesn't malfunction. The closest person capable of fixing mine if it had ever gone down lives 150+ miles away, is 80+ years old and will only help fix if he's not feeling too grumpy when you ask. Final note: '05 and '06 are the best years to get, HP was increased from 300 to 390. If you use it as a weekend fun car I say go for it. A daily driver? No.

My dream carHave always wanted an SSR for summertime cruising and finally found it. I really like the retro styling and the powerful motor and convertible top on this little truck.

Most fun car I have ever owned!Chevrolet built it to be a pace car, and it operates that way. Car is built heavy to keep it square to the ground, but it goes from 40-80 on the press of the gas peddle... The retractable roof is phenomenal engineering, and there is always someone taking pictures or posing with the car.

Fun carI really like driving a convertible powered by a big V-8. It’s got a 6-speed and that makes it even more fun. I wish it had a more user friendly and sturdier cup holder. It definitely is a head turner. It’s really a Vette pickup truck that is easy to get in and out of, compared to an actual Vette. Perfect for me.

As much fun as you can have with your clothes on!!I recently purchased a slingshot yellow 2006 SSR. and I love it. It's a gas to drive, handles beautifully and that 400 ponies under the hood make it a real speedster. It's a keeper!!!!

Best street car I have ever worked on or ownedThis is a better than bought SSR because it has the corvette engine that actually looks like it should have when built. Same look as the Z06 corvette engine. So much fun to drive and show.
