The 2015 Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid hatchback, first introduced in late 2010 as a 2011 model. Key trims for 2015 included the base Volt and the Volt Premium. What made the Volt popular was its extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain, offering a significant all-electric range before switching to gasoline. New pricing started around $34,000, with used models now ranging considerably lower. It stood out for blending electric driving with gasoline backup, alleviating range anxiety.
The Good

The 2015 Volt offers impressive electric performance with instant torque, and the gasoline engine provides peace of mind for longer trips. It's known for its comfortable ride and relatively quiet cabin. Its efficiency is excellent for daily commutes, and the value proposition is strong on the used market, appealing to both environmentally conscious and budget-minded buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 Volt include limited rear passenger space due to the battery pack. Some owners have reported occasional electrical system glitches. Furthermore, higher mileage examples may exhibit battery degradation, which can reduce the all-electric range. Prospective buyers should also inspect the charging system for proper function.

What Problems Does the 2015 Chevrolet Volt Have?

The 2015 Chevrolet Volt has had some reported issues. Frequently reported problems include occasional electrical system glitches, such as issues with the charging system or infotainment system malfunctions. Some owners have also reported issues with the onboard charger failing or displaying error messages. Another area of concern can be premature wear of the front brake pads due to the regenerative braking system not always engaging optimally. Long-term reliability concerns mostly revolve around the battery pack's health and degradation over time, impacting the all-electric range. While the Volt generally has a good reputation for reliability, battery degradation is inevitable with age and mileage. There have been a few recalls issued for the 2015 Volt, including one related to the side impact airbags and another for a potential loss of propulsion. It is recommended to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information. Overall, while there are some potential issues to be aware of, the 2015 Volt is generally considered a reliable vehicle, especially with proper maintenance and care.

How long will the 2015 Chevrolet Volt last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2015 Chevrolet Volt can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Proper maintenance includes regular oil changes (when the gasoline engine is used), battery health checks, and addressing any electrical issues promptly. Long-term durability largely depends on battery care; avoiding extreme temperatures and consistently charging to full capacity can extend battery life. The primary weakness over time is battery degradation, which reduces the all-electric range. Owners may also experience increased repair costs related to the hybrid powertrain components as the vehicle ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Chevrolet Volt comes with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen display with Chevrolet MyLink, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and remote start. The Volt Premium trim adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Bose premium audio system. Optional features included a navigation system and forward collision alert.
In terms of driver-assistance features, the 2015 Volt offered available forward collision alert as an option on the Premium trim. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, and a comprehensive suite of airbags.
Crash-test ratings for the 2015 Volt were generally positive. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded the Volt a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the Volt a “Good” rating in most crashworthiness tests, although specific ratings may vary. It's important to verify specific crash test results from IIHS for the 2015 model year.
The infotainment system, while functional, can feel somewhat dated compared to newer systems. However, it provides essential features like smartphone integration via Bluetooth.

2015 Chevrolet Volt Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Chevrolet Volt had a starting MSRP of around $34,000. Current used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. The Volt has experienced significant depreciation, typical for electric and hybrid vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include battery health (remaining range), overall condition, mileage, and geographic location (demand for EVs). Models with lower mileage and well-maintained batteries command higher prices.

2015 Chevrolet Volt Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Chevrolet Volt is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are low, especially for those who primarily drive within the electric range. Maintenance is relatively straightforward, but potential repairs to the hybrid powertrain or battery can be expensive. Overall, the Volt offers lower running costs than traditional gasoline vehicles, but owners should be prepared for potential battery-related expenses as the car ages. Long-term ownership costs are moderate, balancing fuel savings with potential repair bills.

How Does the 2015 Chevrolet Volt Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Chevrolet Volt competed with plug-in hybrids like the Toyota Prius Plug-in and the Ford C-Max Energi. The Volt offered a greater all-electric range than the Prius Plug-in. The Ford C-Max Energi was similarly priced but lacked the Volt's distinctive powertrain. In terms of reliability, the Volt is generally considered comparable to the Prius, but may have more potential for electrical gremlins.
The Volt's unique selling point was its EREV system; unlike a traditional hybrid that mainly assists the gasoline engine, the Volt's electric motor primarily drives the wheels. When comparing features, the Volt offers a decent set of technology for its time.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Prius Prime (newer model with improved electric range), and if you're willing to forgo the plug-in aspect, a standard Toyota Prius offers excellent fuel economy and reliability. The Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid is also a worthy contender with a more modern design and similar range to the Volt. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Chevrolet Volt a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Chevrolet Volt is ideal for commuters who drive primarily short distances and want to minimize gasoline consumption. It's a good choice for environmentally conscious buyers seeking a blend of electric driving and gasoline backup for longer trips. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. Used models offer excellent value, but battery health should be carefully assessed. A well-maintained Volt Premium with lower mileage is preferable. For those prioritizing reliability and lower long-term costs, a newer plug-in hybrid or a standard hybrid like a Prius might be a better alternative. If you can find a 2015 Volt at a good price with documented maintenance history, it's a solid choice.

Great car

I had this car for about 1 year. I purchased it as a lease return so it was well maintained. I used it for commuting to work only and was able to get to and from work on a single charge. So I've only used one tank of gas during the entire time I had it and just filled it up last week.

Cheapest Car To Drive In America

The threat of $4.00/gallon gas may be over for now, but this car can save you hundreds of dollars per year in gasoline expenses. If you never drive over 40 miles per day, you will never put a drop of gasoline in the car at all. The lifetime fuel mileage on my Chevy Volt is over 155 MPG. The Volt is NOT a HYBRID, but an electric car with a gasoline engine to back it up. No range anxiety like in an all electric car. If you want a cheap to drive car, you cannot do better than the Volt. I have enjoyed owning this car very much. It is comfortable, quiet, cheap to drive and insure, and it is sporty looking. Highly recommended.

Very reliable and fun to drive

I am impressed with the Chevy Volt (2015) and have had no maintenance issues in 42000 miles mostly electric miles. I usually get about 45 miles electric range per charge which is adequate for my commute. The driving experience feels very solid and sporty with lots of power at any speed. The positive - money saved on gas. The negative - the back seat is a bit cramped but rarely used.

Great commuter car

I got this 2015 Volt in 2019 as my sub $15K commuter car. The wife took over the Subaru Outback which serves as the kid hauler and family trip car. The Volt has not lost any battery capacity (the batteries are liquid cooled) and can do my 20 mile round trip twice without plugging in. One month after buying the gas engine hasn't turned on yet. Very peppy in Sport mode, decent handling and mine is the premier that came with leather seats and Bose stereo. This my first American car and I'm happy with the build quality. The two main draw backs for me are the extremely low front air dam, which drags my very mild driveway, and the hump in the back between the rear seats where I usually put a guitar. Also, the center console is definitely different than any other car I've owned. I looked at the Nissan Leaf and the VW eGolf. I like hatchbacks, and I liked that the eGolf looked pretty much just like a gas powered Golf inside and out, but it wasn't sold in my state (North Carolina) so no one, even the VW dealership would work on it. The Leaf is probably the most practical electric car under $15K, but it just wasn't for me. I could not get confortable in the seat and hated the big pit in the trunk. The rear seats fold down, but the back is so low it can never be flat. So for me the Volt has been a great intro to EVs. Fun, comfortable, efficient.

Most Fuel Efficient Long Range Vehicle By Far

This car has been wonderful. I have driven across the country in it, between California and New York 3x. It is the most reliable and low maintenance car I've ever owned, not to mention mega fuel efficient.

Ahead of its time

This in so many ways is a perfect vehicle. It?s a roomy hatchback which makes it extremely useful. It provides a reasonable electric only range for most daily commutes and errands and then is able to be used for trips with a gas generator providing power to the electric motor. The car is fun to drive too. The bad side is the ridiculous first generation iPod inspired center stack. It?s a joke as are most touch pad designs. Give me dials please.

Best car I've ever owned!

Its like a space ship inside and I love it. I especially like that since I've had it, I haven't used any gas in 6 days! Nice ride too. I no longer have to give the greedy oil companies my money! What's not to like?
