The 2016 Chevrolet Volt is a second-generation plug-in hybrid hatchback designed to bridge the gap between electric and gasoline-powered cars. It's a 5-door hatchback and key trims included the base Volt and the Premier. The original Volt ran from 2011-2019. What made the 2016 Volt popular was its increased all-electric range, updated styling, and improved fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor. New prices ranged from around $34,000, before incentives.
The Good

The 2016 Volt offers a compelling blend of electric and gasoline power. For the practical buyer, its long electric range and excellent fuel economy are attractive. Emotionally, it provides a near-silent, torquey driving experience, coupled with a modern design and comfortable interior. Its improved reliability over the first-generation model is a bonus, and it offers great value for its features.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 Volt include its rear visibility, which can be limited due to the car's design. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and its responsiveness. Also, be mindful of high-voltage battery health, especially in older models. Rear seat headroom can be tight for taller passengers due to the battery placement.

What Problems Does the 2016 Chevrolet Volt Have?

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt generally exhibits improved reliability compared to its first-generation predecessor, but some common issues have been reported. Some owners have experienced problems with the infotainment system, including screen freezes and slow response times. Others have reported issues with the climate control system, specifically with the heater not working properly.

Regarding recalls, it's important to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any open recalls affecting the specific VIN. Recalls can address a range of safety-related issues.

Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the high-voltage battery. Over time, battery capacity can degrade, reducing the electric range. Regular maintenance and proper charging habits can help mitigate this. Some owners have reported issues with the onboard charging system, which can prevent the car from charging properly. It's advisable to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified technician specializing in hybrid vehicles to assess the battery's health and identify any potential issues.

How long will the 2016 Chevrolet Volt last?

With regular maintenance and responsible driving habits, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt can easily provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, translating to 10-15 years of ownership. Long-term durability hinges on battery health, which is affected by charging frequency, temperature extremes, and overall usage. Weaknesses over time may include gradual battery degradation (reducing electric range), wear and tear on suspension components, and potential issues with the infotainment system. Staying on top of scheduled maintenance, especially high-voltage system checks, is crucial for longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt boasts a good array of tech and safety features. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a rearview camera, and keyless entry/start. Higher trims like the Premier add features such as a Bose premium audio system, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and automatic parking assist.

Driver-assistance features available on the Premier trim include lane keep assist and forward collision alert. Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control.

Optional features included a navigation system and adaptive cruise control (on Premier).

The 2016 Volt received good crash-test ratings. The NHTSA gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. Check both NHTSA and IIHS websites for detailed reports and specific test results.

2016 Chevrolet Volt Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt had a starting MSRP of around $34,000 when new, before any federal or state tax credits. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $20,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Volt has experienced significant depreciation due to the availability of newer electric vehicles and hybrids. Factors affecting resale value include battery health, overall condition, mileage, and location. Models with lower mileage and well-maintained batteries command higher prices.

2016 Chevrolet Volt Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, and fuel costs are low due to its electric range and hybrid capabilities. Maintenance is relatively standard, with regular oil changes and tire rotations. However, potential high-voltage battery repairs can be costly. Long-term ownership costs are lower than comparable gasoline vehicles, making it a cost-effective choice, especially for those who can maximize electric driving.

2016 Chevrolet Volt Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Chevrolet Volt is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Chevrolet Volt Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt competes with other plug-in hybrids like the Toyota Prius Prime and Ford C-Max Energi. In terms of electric range, the Volt generally offers more than the Prius Prime. The Prius Prime might have a slight edge in overall reliability. The Ford C-Max Energi offers a similar plug-in hybrid experience but isn't as efficient as the Volt.

Regarding performance, the Volt provides quicker acceleration thanks to its electric motor torque. Feature-wise, all three offer comparable tech and safety options. Price-wise, the Volt can be more expensive than the C-Max Energi on the used market, but comparable to the Prius Prime depending on condition and mileage.

Alternatives to consider include the Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid, offering good value and efficiency. If electric range isn't a top priority, a standard hybrid like the Toyota Prius may be a better, more reliable option. However, for those prioritizing extended electric driving, the 2016 Volt remains a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Chevrolet Volt a Good Hatchback?

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt is ideal for commuters and city dwellers seeking to minimize their gasoline consumption while retaining the flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer trips. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with good battery health. Prioritize models with lower mileage and a clean vehicle history report. The Premier trim offers more desirable features, but the base Volt provides excellent value. A pre-purchase inspection by a hybrid specialist is highly recommended to assess battery condition. If electric range is crucial and reliability is a top concern, consider newer plug-in hybrid alternatives or a standard hybrid.

Great design but its still a chevy

The two downside to this car are as follows: Space age thinking car but stupid chevy no thought software. The tech kicks the awesome out from underneath this car, period. As I write this review I cannot bluetooth any phone to my car. No handsfree functionality when I had it yesterday. Is this reliable? Unpredictable glitches such as this undermine what you think you are buying as features. Consider this, the very functionality of this vehicle is software from the accelerator pedal to your pocket key and when it starts to go it goes. The $20K replacement battery isnt the only nightmare here. The stock tires have to go. Electric motors have great torque and spin those tires too much. speed rated are required better than H A A. Those problems are Chevy problems. Unfortunately this is the only car designed like this. The best design for a drive train on planet earth. elegant and simple. EV with a generator. How people don't see the diff between that and a hybrid and do not know. If you are someone that murders trannys this design is for you. No gears to change!

Save your Health or the Environment

Best Auto Ever -- If you're looking for a car to save the world or just your own health -- this is it! I bought my Volt in order to avoid inhaling exhaust fumes when I parked in my garage. I rarely use the gas engine. Only need gas once every two years. Now I got kudos from others for being kind to the environment. Never expected to see $6 a gallon gas. If you're looking for two cars in one, this is it. 53 Mile electric range is never an issue, I can always stop for gas if necessary.

Best electric car ever made

This is the best format for an electric car ever developed. No getting stuck somewhere without electricity. Chevrolet was totally crazy to stop making this car. Today they could sell millions.

Great intro to electric cars?

We had a little range anxiety before buying this extended range electric but with a gasoline generator you can drive at 42MPG after the 52 miles of all electric. That's the furthest of any plug in "hybrid". Fun to drive with lots of torque and a low center of gravity. Great traction in winter too.

LOVE this car

We decided to buy a small commuter car for me to drive to work downsizing from a Toyota sequoia eight seat SUV. The backseat is tight for more than two kids but manageable. What I truly love about this car is it’s actually very quick and it is a blast to drive especially in sport mode and I haven’t gotten gas in three weeks which is phenomenal considering what I was spending with my truck. When I compare what I was paying for fuel filling up three times a week at 60 bucks a pop him this car is saving me money and the car payment is less than I usually spend in gas alone so I’ve been diverting all gas that I would put into my Sequoia into my car payment so this sucker should be paid off in like two years. We want to buy a second volt for my husband now cause he drives a gas guzzler too.

Best hybrid vehicle on the road!

Before owning the Volt, I owned two Corvettes and a Camaro SS. I enjoy driving the Volt as much or more than any car I have ever owned. I am 6'3" tall, so legroom and driving ergonomics are very important to me. The Volt is perfect for me. It is fun to drive, extremely economical, and great looking. Nothing not to like!

Driving electric is a whole new experience.

Amazingly efficient. Comfortable too. This car will change your thinking about driving. It accelerates effortlessly and without any gear shifts to disturb you. I drove for two weeks (about 1,000 miles) before I put 7.5 gallons in the tank.

Does what's promised

Second generation Volt is a big leap forward than its predecessor. I love the interior styling and comfort. I wish it had a 100-mile range. Lane assist isn't reliable though.

Reliable, Comfy, and quiet

I bought my 2016 Chevy volt used about a year ago. I really love the idea of hybrid and EVs but I?m not sold on full battery yet due to charging times. I love that the Volt can do both. If you have time to charge it, great, if not just drive it on gas. The car is great solidly built. I have had Nissan, Honda and dodge cars this by far is the most solidly built car. No rattles or shakes while driving. The ride is quiet and smooth, it really makes driving pleasureable. When going long distances 42mpg is great if you can drive 65-70 if you have a lead foot you?ll be more around 32-36mpg. Overall I?ve had this car for 1 year and I?ve put 22,000 miles (32,000 total) on it. The Chevy dealer told me my brakes still look brand new. Great Car!
