The 2021 Hyundai Kona EV is an all-electric subcompact SUV. The Kona debuted in 2018, with the EV version arriving shortly after. Key trims include the SE, SEL, and Limited. Pricing ranged from around $37,000 to $45,000 when new before incentives. The design is modern and appealing, while the comfortable interior and standard features enhance the driving experience. Vehicle History Report

What Problems Does the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV Have?

One of the most significant issues reported for the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV, and affecting earlier model years as well, involves the high-voltage battery. There was a major recall due to a potential risk of battery fires. This recall affected a large number of Kona EVs globally, and involved battery replacements for many vehicles. Owners should verify if the battery has been replaced under the recall.

Other frequently reported problems include issues with the charging system. Some owners have experienced difficulties with DC fast charging, where the vehicle fails to charge at the expected rate or stops charging prematurely. Software glitches related to the infotainment system and driver-assistance features have also been reported, though these are generally minor and addressed with software updates.

Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the battery's degradation over time. While the Kona EV has a good warranty for the battery, its capacity and range can decrease as the battery ages and undergoes numerous charge cycles. Regular battery health checks are recommended. The earlier model years (2019 and 2020) were more prone to battery issues leading to the recall compared to the 2021 model, although the 2021 model was also affected by the recall.

How long will the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV last?

Based on owner data, a 2021 Hyundai Kona EV, with good maintenance habits, can be expected to provide at least 10 years or 150,000 miles of service. The electric powertrain itself is relatively durable, but long-term durability hinges on battery health. Gradual battery degradation leading to reduced range is the primary concern. Consistent DC fast charging can accelerate degradation. Regular tire rotations, brake inspections, and keeping up with software updates are crucial for maintaining its longevity. The suspension components and interior materials should also hold up reasonably well over time with proper care.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona EV offers a good array of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.

Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, and driver attention warning. The SEL trim adds blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning. The Limited trim further enhances safety with parking distance warning (rear) and a head-up display.

Optional features, depending on the trim, may include a sunroof, leather upholstery, LED headlights, and wireless device charging. The infotainment system is user-friendly, although not the most cutting-edge in terms of graphics and processing power.

In terms of safety, the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV received good crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS. The IIHS gave it a "Top Safety Pick" award. These ratings reflect the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in various crash scenarios. The combination of active and passive safety features contributes to a safe driving experience.

2021 Hyundai Kona EV Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV ranged from approximately $37,000 to $45,000 before any federal or state tax incentives. Current used market prices range from around $18,000 to $30,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. Depreciation is influenced by factors such as battery health, recall history, and overall market demand for EVs. Models with lower mileage and a clean accident history command higher resale values. The battery recall significantly impacted resale values, but a documented battery replacement enhances the vehicle's desirability on the used market. Availability of government incentives for new EVs also puts downward pressure on used EV prices.

2021 Hyundai Kona EV Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Hyundai Kona EV is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are comparable to other small SUVs. Fuel costs are significantly lower than gasoline vehicles due to electric power. Maintenance costs are also lower as EVs require less frequent servicing (no oil changes, etc.). Repair costs can be higher if battery or electrical components need replacement. Overall, the lower running costs offset potentially higher repair costs, making it a cost-effective choice in the long run, provided the battery is in good condition.

How Does the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona EV competes with other small electric SUVs like the Nissan LEAF, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Kia Niro EV. In terms of range, the Kona EV is comparable to the Bolt and Niro, exceeding the LEAF's standard range. Performance is similar across these models, with the Kona offering a slightly more engaging driving experience. The Kona EV's interior is well-designed, but the Bolt EV offers slightly more cargo space. The Niro EV boasts a more refined ride.

In terms of reliability, the Kona EV has faced battery recall issues, whereas the Bolt EV also had a significant battery recall. The Nissan LEAF has a strong reliability record, but its older battery technology may be a concern. The Kia Niro EV shares many components with the Kona EV, offering similar reliability.

Price-wise, the Kona EV is generally competitive. For those prioritizing a more spacious interior, the Chevrolet Bolt EV or Kia Niro EV are better alternatives. If reliability is a top concern, the Nissan LEAF (post 2018 models) might be a consideration, but keep range limitations in mind. Overall, the Kona EV provides a good balance of range, performance, and value in its class, but it's crucial to ensure any used model has had the battery recall addressed.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Hyundai Kona EV a Good Vehicle?

The 2021 Hyundai Kona EV is ideal for city dwellers and commuters seeking an affordable and practical electric vehicle. It's worth buying, especially if you can find a used model with a replaced battery under the recall. The SEL trim offers a good balance of features and value. Avoid models without documented battery replacement. It's a great choice for those prioritizing efficiency, a fun driving experience, and a smaller footprint. However, if you need ample rear passenger space or all-wheel drive, other options might be more suitable. Thoroughly inspect the battery's health before purchasing a used Kona EV.

Fun sporty and environmentally friendly too!

I love love love this car! Meets my needs for city driving with room to haul plants for my garden. Handles well city and highway, good visibility - like the safety features. The only two negatives: the steering wheel feels a little hard/stiff (can be fixed with a cover) and for whatever reason Hyundai does not sell this car in Texas, so I had to order from an out of state dealer and ship it.
