The 2020 Hyundai Kona EV is an all-electric subcompact SUV. Part of the first Kona generation (2018-2023), it offers a blend of practicality and electric efficiency. Key trims include the SE, SEL, and Limited. Its popularity stems from its affordability relative to other EVs, its decent range, and its spunky styling. The original MSRP ranged from roughly $37,000 to $45,000 before incentives.
The Good

The 2020 Kona EV boasts peppy acceleration and agile handling, appealing to those seeking driving fun. Its long electric range offers practicality, while the comfortable interior and distinctive design add to its appeal. Good reliability ratings and strong value proposition make it a smart, satisfying choice for budget-conscious and environmentally aware buyers.

The Bad

The 2020 Kona EV's rear seat space and cargo area are somewhat limited compared to some competitors. The infotainment system, while functional, isn't the most cutting-edge. Battery degradation over time is a potential concern with all EVs, and some owners have reported issues related to the battery management system. Check for battery recalls.

What Problems Does the 2020 Hyundai Kona EV Have?

The most significant issue reported for the 2020 Hyundai Kona EV relates to the high-voltage battery system. There have been recalls due to a potential risk of fire caused by a manufacturing defect in the battery cells. Specifically, some batteries produced at LG Energy Solution's plant in China were found to have defects that could lead to thermal runaway and fires.

Owners should check the NHTSA website (nhtsa.gov) to ensure that any outstanding recall work has been completed. Early models (including the 2020) appear to be more prone to this issue. Some owners have experienced a complete failure of the battery pack, requiring replacement.

Other reported problems include issues with the onboard charger and the battery management system (BMS). The BMS issue can sometimes result in reduced range or charging speeds. Some owners have also reported minor software glitches with the infotainment system. While generally reliable, the battery issue is a significant concern and should be thoroughly investigated before purchasing a used 2020 Kona EV. Check service records carefully for any battery-related repairs or replacements.

How long will the 2020 Hyundai Kona EV last?

With proper maintenance and average driving habits (12,000-15,000 miles per year), a 2020 Hyundai Kona EV could reasonably provide 10-15 years of service. However, battery health is paramount. Regular DC fast charging can accelerate battery degradation. The car's long-term durability hinges on the battery's lifespan. Weaknesses might emerge in the battery management system, potentially reducing range or charging speed over time. Consistent adherence to recommended maintenance schedules and mindful charging practices are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Hyundai Kona EV offers a solid suite of tech and safety features. Standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims feature an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and a head-up display.

Driver-assistance features: Standard forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, and driver attention warning. SEL trim adds blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning. Limited trim includes parking distance warning (rear).

Safety: It has electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2020 Kona EV received good overall safety ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It earned a "Top Safety Pick" award. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. These ratings apply to the non-EV Kona as well; the EV version shares similar safety structures. The absence of engine noise required a pedestrian warning sound, standard on all EVs, to alert pedestrians to the car's presence.

2020 Hyundai Kona EV Prices and Market Value

The 2020 Hyundai Kona EV had an original MSRP ranging from approximately $37,000 to $45,000 before any federal or state tax incentives. As of late 2024, used market prices generally range from $15,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation is significant due to the rapid advancements in EV technology and the availability of new models with longer ranges. The battery recall and potential for battery degradation further impact resale value. Vehicles with documented battery replacements or clean maintenance records will command higher prices.

2020 Hyundai Kona EV Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the Kona EV are typically comparable to other subcompact SUVs. Fuel costs are significantly lower than gasoline cars, thanks to the lower price of electricity. Maintenance is generally less expensive due to fewer moving parts. However, potential battery repairs or replacements can be costly. Overall, the 2020 Kona EV can be economical to own, but it's essential to factor in potential battery-related expenses and insurance costs. Repair costs might be higher if specialized EV technicians are required.

How Does the 2020 Hyundai Kona EV Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2020 Hyundai Kona EV competes with vehicles like the Nissan LEAF, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and Kia Niro EV. The Kona EV offers a better range and more engaging driving experience than the LEAF. Compared to the Bolt EV, the Kona EV's interior is often considered slightly more upscale. The Kia Niro EV is very similar, sharing many components, but might offer slightly more cargo space.

Performance: Kona EV offers quicker acceleration than the LEAF. Bolt has similar performance.

Features: Features are largely comparable across models, with some differences in trim-level packaging.

Reliability: The Kona EV has had battery recall issues, which may impact long-term reliability scores. The Bolt EV also had recalls.

Price: Used prices are generally competitive within this segment.

Alternatives to consider include the newer Hyundai Kona Electric (if budget allows), which addresses some of the shortcomings of the 2020 model. The Tesla Model 3 (used) might also be an option at a similar price point, offering superior range and technology.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona EV a Good Vehicle?

The 2020 Hyundai Kona EV is a good choice for city dwellers and commuters seeking an affordable, fun-to-drive electric vehicle with a usable range. It's worth considering if you can find one at a reasonable price and verify that the battery recall has been addressed. A used SEL or Limited trim offers the best balance of features and value. However, buyers should be aware of potential battery issues and factor that risk into their purchase decision. If a pristine battery history is paramount, exploring a newer EV model might be a safer bet.

Great car but could be better in the snow

The thing goes like h*ll! Two bad things though, it's awful in the snow bc you can't rock it out if you get stuck. It keeps jumping back to neutral. The other thing is the location of the heated seat buttons, we keep accidentally pressing them. That's awful in the summer, and if you have a dog in the car with you he will keep pushing the buttons. Otherwise we'd buy it again. I need to see if there's a fuse for those heated seats that I can take out after our lease is up and we own it.

All in on All Electric

Just bought Kona EV used a few weeks ago, wanted to dip toes into an all electric vehicle. So far, so good. Fun to drive, has plenty of acceleration and loaded with tech (Ultimate trim). Using regenerative braking and one pedal driving is a learning curve, but worth figuring out. Great range, easy to charge...perfect for local and around town driving. Hyundai CPO warranty gives some peace of mind, anticipating years of trouble (maintenence) free driving.

Smartest little car ever

I bought 2021 Kona Ultimate w/ 16k miles at $40,000 cash a month ago. Awesome little car! I'm used to much larger luxury cars but with 15mpg and $6.50 gas it's time to put them away for a while. This feels a bit like a rental car if you get that, but is actually loaded with options. It is very clever, very fast, a blast to drive and full of surprises. ‘Zippy' is a great adjective. Drive it fast and fun all day, then plug it in overnight and you're right back to 100% in the morning. Terrific range, decent stereo, not exactly luxury but pretty close. Smartest little car ever but not at all cheap or easy to find if you want the ‘ultimate' trim instead of SEL. Only two similar in all of California. Downside was plenty of dealer games in San Leandro; other hassle is the STUPID arrangement of drive selector buttons on console. Really annoying, but o well, nothings perfect

Never go back to gas

This car does any thing I ask of it compared to my ICE cars, no range anxiety. Best EV out there in its class by far. Buy the Kona EV for your 1st EV, at this stage no other comparison for the money. Only complaint, Dealers stink, they have no interest in selling or leasing them. Not enough profits in service plus lack of trained sales people. I had to insist on them to charge mine just to test drive it let alone lease it!
