Rating: 4.65
Based on 99 Owner Reviews â–¶
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche is a unique vehicle, blurring the lines between a pickup truck and an SUV. It features a distinctive midgate system, allowing the cargo bed to extend into the cab. The Avalanche, produced from 2002-2013, is known for its versatility. Key trims for 2007 include LS, LT, and LTZ. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $33,000 to $42,000. Its popularity stems from its ability to haul cargo and passengers comfortably.
The Good

The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche offers a blend of truck utility and SUV comfort. Its powerful V8 engine provides ample performance for towing and hauling. The unique midgate design appeals to practical buyers needing flexible cargo space. Comfortable seating and ride quality appeal to emotional buyers seeking a versatile family vehicle. While not the most efficient, its overall value for capability is strong.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche include potential issues with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) system, leading to oil consumption. Some owners report problems with the body cladding, including fading and loosening. Fuel economy can be poor, especially with the 5.3L V8. Rust can be a concern in areas with road salt, particularly on the undercarriage. Check for proper operation of the midgate and its seals to prevent leaks.

What Problems Does the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche Have?

The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche has some frequently reported problems that potential buyers should be aware of. A common issue is excessive oil consumption, often linked to the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system in the 5.3L V8 engine. This can lead to premature engine wear and require costly repairs.

Another area of concern is the body cladding. The plastic cladding can fade, crack, or become loose over time, affecting the vehicle's appearance. Rust, particularly in areas where salt is used on roads, is also a potential problem, especially on the undercarriage and around the wheel wells.

There have been some recalls related to the 2007 Avalanche, so it's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all recall work has been performed. Common recall areas include airbag systems and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability can be affected by the aforementioned oil consumption and rust issues, as well as potential problems with the transmission. Regular maintenance, particularly oil changes and rust prevention measures, are crucial for extending the Avalanche's lifespan. The midgate seals should also be inspected regularly to prevent water leaks into the cabin or bed.

How long will the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service from their vehicles. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or failing to address rust can significantly shorten its lifespan. The AFM system, if not properly maintained, can lead to engine problems. Body cladding issues and potential electrical problems can also arise over time. Regular inspections and timely repairs are key to maximizing the Avalanche's longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time, though it lacks the advanced driver-assistance systems of modern vehicles. Standard features on the base LS trim included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and basic safety features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control. Higher trims like the LT and LTZ added features such as a premium Bose audio system, dual-zone climate control, and available options like a rear-seat entertainment system (DVD player) and navigation.

Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of features like cruise control and available rear parking assist. A rearview camera was available on the LTZ trim. Safety features included front airbags and side-impact airbags.

Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) varied, but the Avalanche generally performed well in frontal and side-impact tests. However, rollover ratings were typically lower, reflecting the vehicle's higher center of gravity. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2007, so compared to modern vehicles, the Avalanche's safety features are less comprehensive. Optional features could include OnStar services, offering emergency assistance and vehicle diagnostics.

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LS started around $33,000, while the top-tier LTZ could reach $42,000. In today's used market, prices range from approximately $5,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Avalanche has depreciated significantly due to its age and higher running costs. Resale value is affected by factors like rust, engine condition (especially regarding AFM issues), and the functionality of the midgate. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices, but overall depreciation is substantial.

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche can be costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are moderate but can be higher for younger drivers. Fuel economy is poor, leading to significant fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially with potential issues like AFM failure, rust, and body cladding repairs. Parts can be more expensive than for some other trucks. Overall, the Avalanche is not an economical choice due to its fuel consumption and potential for expensive repairs.

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche competed with full-size trucks like the Ford F-150, Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Avalanche's 5.3L V8 was competitive, though the Tundra offered more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, the Avalanche stood out with its unique midgate design, but rivals often offered more advanced technology.

Reliability is a key area where the Avalanche falls short compared to some competitors, particularly the Toyota Tundra, which is known for its longevity. The Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram 1500 also had their own reliability issues but generally fared better than the Avalanche in certain areas, such as engine longevity (excluding AFM-related issues).

Price-wise, the used Avalanche is often comparable to its rivals. However, considering long-term ownership costs and potential repairs, the Toyota Tundra might be a better alternative if reliability is a priority. The Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram 1500 offer similar capabilities and may have lower repair costs, depending on the specific model year and engine. If the midgate is not a primary need, a traditional full-size truck offers a wider range of options and potentially better value.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche is ideal for someone who values its unique midgate design and the versatility it offers for hauling both passengers and cargo. It's worth buying if you can find a well-maintained example with documented service history, preferably one where the AFM system has been addressed or disabled. Look for rust-free examples, particularly from southern states. The LT trim offers a good balance of features and value. Be prepared for potentially higher running costs due to fuel consumption and potential repairs. If reliability and long-term ownership costs are paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Tundra. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase and have a mechanic check it before buying.

Phenomenal vehicle

I purchased my 2007 Avalanche in 2011 and am second owner. I absolutely love this truck and have taken excellent care of it the whole time. I bought it with 65000 miles on it and now have 250,000. Yes, I've replaced things and have been proactive in replacing other things that can go out like water pumps, alternators, etc...I absolutely trust this old girl to take me anywhere and any distance and wouldnt hesitate to buy another one.

UNBELIEVABLE

2007 LTZ I bought it second hand in Aug 2006. Now, 168,000 mile on it and the first problem I have had was my oil pressure sensor just went out . NOT one problem and I bought it in Aug 2006 sight unseen while I was in Bagdad Iraq off of eBay. It runs and looks the same as the day I bought it.

Driving on interstate at 75 miles per hour when the rear frame rusted in half on driver side rear. I think they use the cheapest steel . What outrages price for vehicle and it's pure junk. Piss poor engineering if you ask me.
