The Good
The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche provides a blend of pickup truck utility and SUV comfort appealing to practical buyers needing cargo space and seating. Performance is adequate with a V8 engine. The midgate design offers versatility, and its bold styling attracts emotional buyers. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers decent value on the used market. Reliability is generally good.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche include fuel economy, which is typical for a large truck. The plastic body cladding can be prone to fading or damage. The midgate seals should be inspected for leaks. Also, check for common GM electrical issues and transmission maintenance history. Rust can be a concern in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Have?
While specific recalls for the 2013 model year may exist, it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information. Earlier model years (2007-2009) of the Avalanche had recalls related to airbag deployment and fuel system leaks. These issues might surface in later model years as vehicles age.
Long-term reliability concerns include rust, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. The plastic cladding can also become brittle and prone to cracking over time. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is critical to mitigating potential problems and extending the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included rear parking assist on higher trims. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control (StabiliTrak), and a suite of airbags including front, side-impact, and head curtain airbags. The Avalanche also featured OnStar, providing automatic crash response and roadside assistance.
Optional features varied by trim but could include a rearview camera (though not standard), power-adjustable pedals, and remote start.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied. It's best to consult these organizations' websites directly for specific ratings, but generally, the Avalanche performed well in frontal crash tests, but side-impact scores could vary depending on the testing methodology. Ratings can be model specific, so check results for the exact configuration.

How Does the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Compare to Other LTZ?
Alternatives to consider include the Honda Ridgeline, which offers a similar blend of truck and SUV features, albeit in a smaller package. For raw towing power and payload capacity, the F-150 or Ram 1500 might be better choices. The Toyota Tundra is known for its long-term reliability. If the unique midgate isn't essential, these alternatives could provide better value or performance, depending on individual needs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche a Good LTZ?

Solid truck!I currently own a 2011 Chevy avalanche LS with several upgraded packages. Exterior…I really like the design of the truck and some people say the big pillars in the bed are a blind spot but I’ve never really had an issue with them. Interior…the dash is cracked in several places (before I bought it) and the interior has some loud rattles. But the seats are very comfortable and the coil suspension gives the truck an incredible ride. Handling is a little squishy and acceleration isn’t great but usually your not buying a truck for speed 🙂 The Midgate is an extremely cool feature that I feel like a lot of people skip over…very intuitive design and on hot days I pop the back window out and store it in the mid gate for a “almost†convertible feel. Overall I would recommend the truck 8/10

Refuse to sell my AvalancheSold my 2008 Avalanche to buy a 2013 Avalanche knowing this was the last production year. I normally purchase a new vehicle every 5 years, but I am extremely satisfied with my 20113 Avalanche. I unsure as to what vehicle to buy so I am keeping my Avalanche. It is now 10 years old. I do maintain a strict maintenance schedule and put in only the better brand gasoline. Other than the regular maintenance including brakes and tires, I have not had a single repair issue. My wife loves it and feels safe in the Avalanche and will not travel with anything else. My only wish is that the more advanced technology was/or had been available on the 2013.We wish GM would bring it back.

2013 Chevy avalancheReplace transmission at 150,000 miles. Cracking dash in the second year (2014) of ownership. Chevrolet would not replace it under warranty and the car was one year old at the time. Oxygen sensors going out from time to time continually.

Very reliablePlenty of legroom, plenty of power outlets, heated and air-conditioned seats, heated steering wheel, DVD/CD player. This vehicle is well-made. The exterior is in excellent condition.

Best of both worlds! This vehicle gives you the ride of a luxury SUV with the ability to haul like a truck. Having the ability to secure things in the bed is a great feature as well. The locking panels over the bed are sturdy enough to walk on. The storage and ease of access to the compartments on the side of the bed is a great feature as well. I bought a 2007 Avalanche and loved it so much that I sold it (for a profit) and bought a 2013 Black Diamond edition. Love it!

Most Versatile vehicle ownedAwesome styling. Powerful 5.3 engine and 90% of the parts are easy to work with. The interior is one of the interiors GM has came out with.
