The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche is a unique full-size pickup truck known for its versatile midgate design, which allows extending the bed into the cabin. Produced from 2002-2013, the Avalanche combines truck utility with SUV comfort. Key trims include LS, LT, and LTZ. The original MSRP ranged from around $35,000 to $45,000, with used prices varying based on condition and mileage. Its ability to easily switch between cargo and passenger space made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche provides a blend of pickup truck utility and SUV comfort appealing to practical buyers needing cargo space and seating. Performance is adequate with a V8 engine. The midgate design offers versatility, and its bold styling attracts emotional buyers. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers decent value on the used market. Reliability is generally good.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche include fuel economy, which is typical for a large truck. The plastic body cladding can be prone to fading or damage. The midgate seals should be inspected for leaks. Also, check for common GM electrical issues and transmission maintenance history. Rust can be a concern in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Have?

The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, leading to oil consumption. Transmission issues, such as hard shifting or slipping, have also been noted, particularly at higher mileages. Electrical problems, including issues with the radio, door locks, and window motors, are also reported.

While specific recalls for the 2013 model year may exist, it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information. Earlier model years (2007-2009) of the Avalanche had recalls related to airbag deployment and fuel system leaks. These issues might surface in later model years as vehicles age.

Long-term reliability concerns include rust, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. The plastic cladding can also become brittle and prone to cracking over time. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is critical to mitigating potential problems and extending the vehicle's lifespan.

How long will the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, especially oil changes and transmission fluid flushes. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, particularly in regions with road salt. Weaknesses over time may include the AFM system causing excessive oil consumption, as well as electrical component failures. Proper care and timely repairs are vital for maximizing its lifespan.

Negative Owner Reviews
gkm1960
Replace transmission at 150,000 miles. Cracking dash in the second year (2014) of ownership. Chevrolet would not replace it under warranty and the car was one year old at the time. Oxygen sensors going out from time to time continually.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche offered a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims added features like a Bose premium sound system and satellite radio. Navigation was available as an option.

Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but included rear parking assist on higher trims. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control (StabiliTrak), and a suite of airbags including front, side-impact, and head curtain airbags. The Avalanche also featured OnStar, providing automatic crash response and roadside assistance.

Optional features varied by trim but could include a rearview camera (though not standard), power-adjustable pedals, and remote start.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied. It's best to consult these organizations' websites directly for specific ratings, but generally, the Avalanche performed well in frontal crash tests, but side-impact scores could vary depending on the testing methodology. Ratings can be model specific, so check results for the exact configuration.

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche ranged from approximately $35,000 to $45,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and location, but typically range from $15,000 to $25,000. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for trucks. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, service history, and whether it's a 4x4 model. Models with lower mileage and well-documented maintenance records command higher prices. Demand for the Avalanche’s unique features can also influence resale value.

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typical for a full-size truck. Fuel costs can be high due to its V8 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate, although some repairs (like AFM-related issues) can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting maintenance will result in higher repair bills. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle, but responsible ownership can help manage expenses.

2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a LTZ with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche Compare to Other LTZ?

The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche competes with other full-size pickup trucks like the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Avalanche's 5.3L V8 is comparable, though some rivals offer more powerful engine options. Feature-wise, the Avalanche's midgate is unique, but other trucks offer more advanced technology. Reliability is generally on par, but the F-150 and Tundra have strong reputations. Price-wise, the Avalanche often sits in the middle of the pack on the used market.

Alternatives to consider include the Honda Ridgeline, which offers a similar blend of truck and SUV features, albeit in a smaller package. For raw towing power and payload capacity, the F-150 or Ram 1500 might be better choices. The Toyota Tundra is known for its long-term reliability. If the unique midgate isn't essential, these alternatives could provide better value or performance, depending on individual needs.

Ranks #924 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche a Good LTZ?

The 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche is ideal for buyers who need a blend of truck utility and SUV comfort, particularly those who value the unique midgate feature. It's worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean service history. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Aim for the LT or LTZ trims for better features. It's generally not recommended as a new purchase since it's no longer in production. However, buying used, especially if you can find a low-mileage example in excellent condition, can be a worthwhile investment if it fits your specific needs and budget.

Solid truck!

I currently own a 2011 Chevy avalanche LS with several upgraded packages. Exterior…I really like the design of the truck and some people say the big pillars in the bed are a blind spot but I’ve never really had an issue with them. Interior…the dash is cracked in several places (before I bought it) and the interior has some loud rattles. But the seats are very comfortable and the coil suspension gives the truck an incredible ride. Handling is a little squishy and acceleration isn’t great but usually your not buying a truck for speed 🙂 The Midgate is an extremely cool feature that I feel like a lot of people skip over…very intuitive design and on hot days I pop the back window out and store it in the mid gate for a “almost” convertible feel. Overall I would recommend the truck 8/10

Refuse to sell my Avalanche

Sold my 2008 Avalanche to buy a 2013 Avalanche knowing this was the last production year. I normally purchase a new vehicle every 5 years, but I am extremely satisfied with my 20113 Avalanche. I unsure as to what vehicle to buy so I am keeping my Avalanche. It is now 10 years old. I do maintain a strict maintenance schedule and put in only the better brand gasoline. Other than the regular maintenance including brakes and tires, I have not had a single repair issue. My wife loves it and feels safe in the Avalanche and will not travel with anything else. My only wish is that the more advanced technology was/or had been available on the 2013.We wish GM would bring it back.

Best of both worlds!

This vehicle gives you the ride of a luxury SUV with the ability to haul like a truck. Having the ability to secure things in the bed is a great feature as well. The locking panels over the bed are sturdy enough to walk on. The storage and ease of access to the compartments on the side of the bed is a great feature as well. I bought a 2007 Avalanche and loved it so much that I sold it (for a profit) and bought a 2013 Black Diamond edition. Love it!
