The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a compact all-electric hatchback designed to make electric vehicle ownership more accessible. Introduced in the 2017 model year, the Bolt EV offered a significant range at a relatively affordable price point. Key trims include the LT and Premier. When new, the pricing ranged from approximately $37,000 before incentives. The Bolt EV's popularity stems from its impressive range for its class and its practical hatchback design.
The Good

The 2018 Bolt EV offers brisk acceleration and a fun driving experience (emotional appeal). It's highly efficient, with low running costs and minimal maintenance (practical appeal). It offers a comfortable ride for its size and a spacious interior. The Bolt EV also provides great value due to its long range and features at a competitive price.

The Bad

Some common complaints include seat comfort, particularly on longer drives. The rear suspension can feel a bit stiff, especially over rough roads. Battery degradation over time is a factor to consider, although the Bolt EV has generally held up well. Prior recalls regarding battery fire risks are crucial to investigate when purchasing a used model.

What Problems Does the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV Have?

The most significant issue affecting the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV, and earlier models, was a recall related to the high-voltage battery. This was due to a potential fire risk caused by a manufacturing defect. Chevrolet issued multiple recalls and ultimately offered battery replacements to address the problem. It is essential to verify that any 2018 Bolt EV has had the battery replaced or updated according to the recall instructions.
Other commonly reported problems include occasional software glitches with the infotainment system and some complaints about the comfort of the seats, particularly on long journeys. Some owners have also reported minor issues with the climate control system.
Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around battery degradation over time. While the Bolt EV's battery has generally proven durable, some loss of range is expected as the vehicle ages and accumulates mileage. Regular maintenance, including proper charging practices, can help mitigate battery degradation. Check service records for any reported electrical issues or problems with the charging system.

How long will the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Key to longevity is consistent maintenance, including regular tire rotations, brake inspections, and maintaining proper coolant levels for the battery pack. Battery health is the primary long-term durability concern. Gradual range reduction is inevitable, but responsible charging habits (avoiding frequent full charges and discharges) can help prolong battery life. Monitor the battery's performance over time and address any unusual drops in range promptly.

The perfect urban car. Only downside is that it doesn't yet have the highway charging infrastructure needed for cross country travel. I've read some comments about the front seat not being that comfortable. Maybe that's true if you way 200 pounds, but for me they are very comfortable.
Romeni
Very well designed auto. Tech is very managble. We are very happy with range and performance. This is our second all electric. Highly recommend a fabulous auto for the price. Our model came with some great. Safety features.
Dmonte
The Bolt has plenty of headroom for tall drivers. The driver seat is a bit too narrow for me. Similarly cramped like an airline seat. The center console is too far back, making it hard for the driver to access. Two small cup holders and a lot of wasted space in front of the center console. Performance wise the Bolt is a rocket. Very smooth acceleration and excellent visibility. It looks very nice from the outside. Overall I really like it, however it is a bit uncomfortable for anything over 100 miles.
Negative Owner Reviews
dkpurple
I, probably, will purchase this car. The range is good, but it could be better. What is necessary, is faster home charging - zero to full in one hour. A gas car can go from empty to full in ten minutes. Waiting 9 hours is a bit much. The interior can be quieter. There is a lot of wind noise. There is also a lot of tire noise. A quiet interior is what I want from an EV. The Bolt needs to be hushed-up. Then there is the seats. They are not comfortable. A car costing 40K should have navagation. The hard plastic interior scratches much too easily.

2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV Prices and Market Value

The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV had a starting MSRP of around $37,000 before federal and state incentives. As of late 2024, used prices typically range from $12,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Bolt EV has depreciated significantly, largely due to the battery recall and the introduction of newer, longer-range EVs. Resale value is influenced by the battery's health, whether the recall fix has been applied, and overall vehicle condition. Lower mileage examples and those with documented maintenance records tend to command higher prices.

2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are significantly lower than gasoline vehicles, as it runs on electricity. Maintenance is less frequent, as there are fewer moving parts compared to an internal combustion engine. However, battery replacements, if needed down the line, can be a substantial expense. Overall, the Bolt EV offers lower long-term running costs, but potential battery-related expenses should be considered.

2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV competes with vehicles like the Nissan LEAF, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Kia Niro EV. Compared to the LEAF, the Bolt EV generally offered a longer range and a slightly more engaging driving experience. The Kona Electric and Niro EV are more recent entries and often boast more advanced features and potentially better battery technology.

Performance: The Bolt EV has a peppy acceleration, comparable to its rivals.
Features: The Bolt EV's features are competitive for its model year, but newer models may have more advanced driver-assistance systems.
Reliability: The battery recall is a significant factor impacting reliability perceptions. Models with the updated battery are more reliable.
Price: Used Bolt EVs are often more affordable than comparable EVs, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Alternatives to consider include the Hyundai Kona Electric or Kia Niro EV for newer technology and possibly better long-term reliability (after the Bolt EV battery fix). The Nissan LEAF is another option, but it may offer a shorter range.

Best value among EVs, but not ideal for road trips

The Bolt is the perfect car for commuting and errands around town, particularly if you can charge at home. It is small on the outside but spacious on the inside (at least in the front seats). It is surprisingly peppy - you can easily get the tires to chirp in accelerating. On the downside, not all Bolts have DC fast charging, which would make it impractical for road trips and if you don't have home charging. Check charge port for the orange cap - that means it has DC charging. The Bolts with DC charging only charge at 55 kw, slower than most. Road trips are possible, but it will take an hour to charge every 250 miles. Overall, the Bolt is fun to drive, practical, and great value for money.

the most Affordable long range EV

yes, I know there is Tesla, but if you want an affordable EV, with range >250 miles, easy charging - only once a week in my case!, low or no maintenance, at low cost, carpool access - this American made Chevy Bolt EV should be your choice

Great EV

This car holds as much Cargo as SUV’s I have owned in the past and uses NO GAS! I have not been to a gas station or to the repair shop since I purchased the car. My only complaint is that due to the very limited EV plugs available nationwide I do not feel secure taking it on the road for any trips more than 180 miles RT. For that reason alone I would prefer a Tesla model 3.

Range is disappointing

I really liked this car in the beginning but the mileage has been extremely disappointing and have a quality issue. I drive 200 miles every weekend and have only been able to make that drive a few times without charging. In the winter in California I often get under 170 miles. Chevy should also invest in a mileage estimator that learns from previous drives.

My 2nd Electric Car

I am able to drive 240 miles on a full charge. The acceleration at times scares me. Even "worse" in sport mode. The force will actually push you back into your seat. The handling is great, it moves in and around highway traffic with ease, thanks to the engine power. Inside, the display is huge, all of the controls are easy to get to. The rear view mirror is actual a display of the back (or front) camera. The technology on this car is the best I've ever had. Front seats are a little tight, but, still okay on longer trips. My lease is up next year. I don't think I'm going to look at anything else, just get another one!

My favorite car

After driving a Leaf for 7 years, I was concerned that the Bolt would not be comfortable, but it is even more comfy to drive than the Leaf, and the improvement in range leaves the Leaf in the dust. I just love this car! I bought the extended warranty and plan on driving it forever. My only quibble is that the visors are too small. That's it.
