The 2014 Chevrolet SS is a rear-wheel-drive, four-door performance sedan produced by GM. It was only available from 2014 to 2017. There was only one trim level offered. Its standout feature is its Corvette-derived LS3 6.2L V8 engine, offering a thrilling driving experience in a practical sedan package. New, it ranged from approximately $45,000 to $48,000. Its rarity and performance make it a desirable car.
The Good

The 2014 Chevrolet SS offers exhilarating performance thanks to its potent V8. It is surprisingly comfortable for a performance sedan, making it suitable for daily driving. Styling is understated yet aggressive, appealing to those seeking a sleeper car. While not the most efficient, its reliability and strong resale value make it a compelling package.

The Bad

The 2014 Chevrolet SS has some weaknesses. Fuel economy isn't great. Some owners have reported issues with the electric power steering. The Magnetic Ride Control suspension, if equipped, can be expensive to repair. The rear differential cooler has also been known to leak on some models. Inspect these areas carefully before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2014 Chevrolet SS Have?

The 2014 Chevrolet SS, while generally reliable, has experienced some reported problems. One common issue involves the electric power steering (EPS) system, where some owners have reported a loss of power assist, though it is rare.
Another reported problem is related to the Magnetic Ride Control suspension (if equipped), with some owners experiencing leaks or failures of the shocks, which can be costly to repair. Rear differential cooler line leaks have also been reported.
Regarding recalls, it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to the specific VIN of the vehicle. While there haven't been widespread, major recalls specifically for the 2014 model year, it's always prudent to verify.
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the typical wear and tear of high-performance components. The LS3 engine itself is known to be robust, but regular maintenance and careful driving habits are essential. Also, the 6L80 automatic transmission, while generally reliable, benefits from regular fluid changes to ensure smooth operation over time. The rear axles can sometimes be a source of noise or vibration as they age.

How long will the 2014 Chevrolet SS last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Chevrolet SS can easily exceed 200,000 miles or 15+ years of service. The LS3 engine is inherently durable. Factors affecting longevity include adherence to recommended maintenance schedules (oil changes, fluid flushes), driving style, and climate. Long-term weaknesses may include wear on suspension components (especially Magnetic Ride Control), potential EPS issues, and possible transmission problems if not properly maintained. Rust can also be a factor in colder climates where road salt is used. Careful owners will enjoy many years of reliable performance.

2014 Chevrolet SS Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Chevrolet SS had a starting MSRP of around $45,000 to $48,000 when new, depending on options. Current used market prices generally range from $30,000 to $45,000+, depending on mileage, condition, and options (manual transmission models command a premium). Depreciation has been relatively slow, making the SS a good investment compared to other sedans. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, color (some colors are more desirable), having the manual transmission, and the presence of the Magnetic Ride Control suspension. Low production numbers contribute to its strong resale value.

2014 Chevrolet SS Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Chevrolet SS is generally not an economical car to own. Insurance costs can be higher due to its performance nature. Fuel costs are significant given its powerful V8 engine. Maintenance costs are moderate, but repairs, especially for the Magnetic Ride Control suspension or other unique components, can be expensive. Overall, long-term ownership costs are higher than average due to fuel, insurance, and potential repair expenses. Budget accordingly.

How Does the 2014 Chevrolet SS Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Chevrolet SS competes with performance sedans like the Dodge Charger R/T and SRT models, the Chrysler 300 SRT, and the Ford Taurus SHO.
Performance: The SS excels with its LS3 V8, often matching or exceeding the performance of its rivals.
Features: The SS is well-equipped, but some rivals offer more modern technology or luxury features.
Reliability: The SS is generally reliable, but some rivals may have a slight edge in overall dependability.
Price: Used prices for the SS can be competitive, but well-maintained examples often command a premium.
Alternatives:
  • Dodge Charger R/T or SRT: Offers similar performance and aggressive styling at a potentially lower price point.
  • Chrysler 300 SRT: Provides a more luxurious interior and similar performance.
  • Ford Taurus SHO: A less performance-focused but more fuel-efficient option with all-wheel drive.
For pure performance and understated style, the SS holds its own. However, buyers seeking more modern features or lower running costs might consider the alternatives.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Chevrolet SS a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Chevrolet SS is ideal for enthusiasts seeking a powerful, rear-wheel-drive sedan with a classic American V8. It's worth buying if you appreciate its understated styling, strong performance, and relative rarity. Opting for a well-maintained used model is the most practical approach, as new ones are no longer available. Look for models with the optional Magnetic Ride Control. Be prepared for higher running costs and potential maintenance expenses. If you prioritize performance and don't mind the lack of some modern amenities, the SS is a compelling choice. Ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

2014 CHEVY SS - Pure Adrenaline!

The best car I’ve ever owned! That includes my 1978 BMW 320i that I had to drive while I was in college. Great handling & acceleration for a Sport Sedan.

Very fun and sleek.

Great performance in a very low key package. You can have the same fun as a Camaro/Mustang with 4doors and with out the dirty looks from law enforcement.

True American Muscle Sleeper

This is a fantastic car, limited production so definitely unique. The car is very quick when you get on the gas, but when cruising it is so quiet inside and very subtle. The car may be slightly collectible one day as there were only a few made. A few low mile examples are around if you wanted one to add to a collection. This is also a great car if you want quick but still need a daily driver. Between the comfortable seats, navigation and Bose sound system, it doesn't get much better than the SS especially for the price, the performance wont be had elsewhere. The only complaint I have about the car comes from the inside, the rear windows are auto roll down but not going up and it also does not have homeland. Those two minor things can actually be changed so not a huge dealbreaker and for me even if they couldn't be added then I still wouldn't shy away from the car.

Made in Australia. Excellent workmanship!

The car had only two options, moon roof and full size spare. EVERYTHING else was in the base price! LS3-6.2 V-8. It's a four door Corvette. $25,000 less than a CTS-V. If they were still making them I would buy another.

Great test drive!

I have been looking for a bigger 4 door performance sedan to accomodate my growing family. I already own a SUV and a Wagon..so my personal fun vehicle needs to be replaced. It is great..but too small to fit the family of 4 now if i want to go out for a fun drive. The list of 4 door performace sedans that are a few years old (V8'S) is not long. I don't want the maintenance cost of a BMW or a Mercedes...so this vehicle was my target. Cars.com pointed me to a dealer who had the exact SS i was looking for in stock. Made the appointment and headed over to see it. The car is BIG...I'm 6 foot and 350 lbs and i could sit in the back behind the drivers seat adjusted to me drving with no problem. Trunk is big. And of course the drivetrain is awesome..LS3 and 6 speed paddle shift auto. The drivers seat was a bit hard..think some rear numbness may occur on longer drives. Dual zone climate control was great...and the sound and power..again...awesome. Would be a very fun car for the daily slog and for some fun on a backroad too. I will own one of these at some point..just have to keep my eye on the market for them.
