The 2015 Chevrolet SS is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan with roots tracing back to Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary. Sold in the US from 2014-2017, it offered a unique blend of American muscle and European handling. Available only as a sedan, it came in a single, well-equipped trim. Pricing ranged from around $45,000 when new. Its powerful V8 engine and understated styling made it a popular choice for enthusiasts seeking a sleeper performance car.
The Good

The 2015 Chevrolet SS excels in performance, offering exhilarating acceleration and responsive handling. Reliability is generally good, and the comfortable interior makes it suitable for daily driving. Its understated design appeals to those who prefer a sleeper aesthetic. While not the most efficient, its value proposition as a powerful, well-equipped sedan remains strong, appealing to both the heart and the head.

The Bad

The 2015 Chevrolet SS, while generally reliable, has some potential weaknesses. Watch for potential issues with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) system, which can lead to oil consumption. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer cars. Parts can be more expensive due to its Australian origins. Rust, while not pervasive, should also be checked, especially in areas with road salt.

What Problems Does the 2015 Chevrolet SS Have?

The 2015 Chevrolet SS, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems and potential long-term reliability concerns. One of the most common issues revolves around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. This system, designed to improve fuel economy, can sometimes lead to excessive oil consumption. This is typically due to the AFM lifters failing and causing damage to the cylinder walls. While not all SS models experience this, it's a known potential issue to be aware of.

Another reported issue, though less frequent, involves the infotainment system. Some owners have experienced glitches, freezes, or connectivity problems with the MyLink system. The system can feel dated compared to newer infotainment systems.

Recalls for the Chevrolet SS were relatively limited, and often covered various model years including 2015. These recalls addressed issues such as potential problems with the power steering assist, which could lead to reduced steering assist at low speeds, and potential issues with the fuel system.

Long-term reliability concerns mainly focus on the aforementioned AFM issue and the availability of parts. Because the SS was primarily manufactured in Australia, sourcing replacement parts can sometimes be more expensive and take longer compared to more common American vehicles. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and inspections, can help mitigate some of these potential long-term concerns.

How long will the 2015 Chevrolet SS last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Chevrolet SS can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding these figures. Regular oil changes, attention to cooling system maintenance, and addressing any potential AFM issues are crucial for long-term durability. The LS3 engine is generally robust, but the AFM system remains a potential weakness. Also, as the car ages, expect to address wear items like suspension components and bushings. Rust prevention, especially in northern climates, is important to ensure the car's longevity. Well-maintained examples can provide many years of reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Chevrolet SS came well-equipped with a decent array of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features for its time.

Tech and Entertainment: The centerpiece is the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen. It includes features like Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls and audio streaming, USB ports, and a premium Bose audio system that provides excellent sound quality. Navigation was available, though it was part of the standard package, not an add-on option. The system could feel dated when compared to newer systems in 2015 even, and especially by today's standards.

Driver-Assistance Features: The SS included several driver-assistance features, such as a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and blind-spot monitoring. It also featured automatic parallel parking assist, which was a relatively advanced feature for the time.

Safety Features: Standard safety equipment included antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags.

Optional Features: The sunroof was the primary standalone optional feature.

Crash Test Ratings: The 2015 Chevrolet SS received good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It earned a 5-star overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also gave the SS good ratings in its crash tests.

2015 Chevrolet SS Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Chevrolet SS had an MSRP of around $45,000. As a used vehicle, prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $30,000 to $45,000+ on the used market. The SS has depreciated, but values have stabilized and even risen slightly in recent years due to its rarity and enthusiast appeal. Low mileage examples, manual transmission models, and well-maintained cars command a premium. The limited production run and the discontinuation of the SS contribute to its relatively strong resale value. Cars that have been modified, especially with aftermarket parts can negatively impact the resell value.

2015 Chevrolet SS Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Chevrolet SS is not the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs can be higher due to its performance capabilities. Fuel economy is typical for a V8, requiring premium fuel. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be more expensive due to the car's Australian origins and potential parts availability challenges. The AFM system issues could lead to costly repairs. Overall, expect higher-than-average long-term ownership costs compared to more mainstream sedans. It's more of a commitment than a commuter car.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Chevrolet SS Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Chevrolet SS competed with other performance sedans like the Dodge Charger R/T and SRT, Chrysler 300 SRT, and even some European offerings like the BMW 550i or Audi S6. In terms of performance, the SS offered comparable horsepower and acceleration to the Charger R/T and 300 SRT, but with arguably better handling due to its Magnetic Ride Control suspension. The European alternatives offered more refined interiors and potentially more advanced technology, but at a higher price point.

Compared to the Dodge Charger, the SS offered a more understated, "sleeper" look. The Charger had a more aggressive and readily identifiable design. The SS was often seen as the better drivers car. In terms of reliability, the SS is generally comparable to the Charger, although the AFM system is a potential concern.

Alternatives to the SS could include a used Cadillac CTS-V for even higher performance, though at a higher price. A newer Dodge Charger Scat Pack offers similar performance and a more modern interior, but lacks the SS's unique appeal. For someone prioritizing fuel economy, the alternatives would be better. For a buyer seeking a unique blend of American muscle and European handling in a relatively rare package, the SS remains a compelling choice. If one is looking for a similar but cheaper car, they could look at the Pontiac G8 GXP, which is essentially the SS's predecessor.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Chevrolet SS a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Chevrolet SS is ideal for the enthusiast seeking a powerful, understated, and relatively rare performance sedan. It's worth buying if you appreciate its unique blend of American muscle and European handling, and if you're prepared for slightly higher running costs. A well-maintained used example is the only option, as it's no longer in production. Look for models with documented service history, especially regarding the AFM system. A manual transmission model is highly desirable for driving enthusiasts. If you value a modern infotainment system and ultimate fuel economy, other options might be better.

Great road car

The only 2 issues I have with this car is the cost to replace the shocks and a little to much road noise. The handling and performance are great and highway mileage is 25 mpg.

Love driving this car

I special ordered this car and waited 6 months for it to arrive from Australia. I love driving this car! It has power, but could really use more, looks great and is super comfortable. Radio could certainly be better and it does suck gas, but you don't buy a strong V8 for the gas mileage. There have been a number of recalls too, including the power steering rack which some have had issues with. Outside of the recalls I haven't had any issues. You can't go wrong with the last V8, manual transmission, rear wheel drive, 4 door sedan available in the USA.

Its sad that it is such a good looking car , what

problem is my 2015 ss had the same problem with the steering connector corrosion and vara chevrolet charged me for a power steering rack. Instead of fixing the problem of connector corrosion. Now my wipers and day lights have gone bad. Wonder what fib they will tell me now.

Power, comfort, and handling reasonably priced

Very few cars left with a V8 and 6-speed manual, especially when you narrow the list to sedans. Great power, handling, and relatively comfortable. The only tic in the negative column is the interior quality when compared to higher end cars. However, the price is makes up for any cheap interior shortfalls. Great car.

Tremendous performance sedan for the money

This car meets everyone’s needs. Room for the family but style and performance for the car lover. V8 engine, Brenton brakes, auto or manual trans.

Family Muscle Car

Exhilarating performance with a sleeper-like body style. Until you notice the giant Brimbo brakes on each wheel, some may dismiss the SS as a family vehicle (which it easily could be). The brilliant LS3 motor and impressive power-train flawlessly deliver power to the rear wheels which you feel in the driver seat. If you find yourself on a test drive then may I highly suggest the Competitive Mode setting.

American muscle from Australia?...yep!

So many positive things to say I could write a book here...try it and you'll see for yourself. The limited run of this model is guaranteed to make this car a future value.

A new E39 from Chevrolet

These cars are know as the Commodore in Australia and Europe. They were built by Holden before GM closed the Australian manufacturing. There is a sense of European balance with Ozzie swagger. The styling is very subtle. Perfect for those of us who prefer the driving experience to showing off. All the underpinnings come from the GM parts bin that supports Camaro?s and Corvettes. 6.2 V8, 6-speed manual and fabulous handling on the magnetic ride control. Yet does not draw attention. A perfect Q-car to quickly work traffic with. I did a cross country in very good without so much as a glance from the constabulary. Drove 17 hours one day without become uncomfortable. I have a E39 BMW, this is about as close to that type of driving experience I have found.
