The 2018 BMW X2 is a sporty subcompact crossover SUV that joined the BMW lineup to cater to buyers seeking a more youthful and stylish alternative to the X1. Its coupe-like roofline sets it apart. Available in sDrive28i (FWD) and xDrive28i (AWD) trims, its original pricing ranged from around $37,000 to $42,000. The X2's dynamic handling and distinctive design contribute to its popularity.
The Good

The 2018 BMW X2 offers a blend of agile performance and distinctive design. Its responsive engine and sporty handling appeal to emotional buyers. Practical advantages include decent fuel efficiency for its class, comfortable front seats, and available all-wheel drive. However, rear passenger space is limited.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2018 BMW X2 include a firm ride quality that may not suit all drivers. The rear seat space is somewhat cramped, and visibility to the rear can be limited due to the sloping roofline. Infotainment can be complex. Some owners have reported minor electrical issues.

What Problems Does the 2018 BMW X2 Have?

The 2018 BMW X2, while generally considered reliable, has had some frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and connectivity problems with Apple CarPlay. Others have mentioned minor electrical issues, such as problems with sensors or the navigation system. Some users have reported problems with the adaptive cruise control system.
Recalls for the 2018 X2 have been relatively limited, but it's essential to check the NHTSA website for the latest information. Long-term reliability concerns are similar to those of other modern BMWs, including potential issues with oil leaks, cooling system components, and the turbocharger over time. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for ensuring long-term reliability. It's worth noting that the 2018 model year is the first for the X2, so long-term data is still emerging. However, because it shares many components with the BMW X1, reliability can be reasonably inferred from X1 owner experiences. Early build models can sometimes exhibit more issues than later production runs. As the X2 ages, it will be important to stay vigilant for common issues such as control arm bushing wear, as well as potential transmission issues, though these are not consistently reported.

How long will the 2018 BMW X2 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 BMW X2 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service, or 10-13 years. This is highly dependent on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule and proactive repairs. Long-term durability could be affected by potential oil leaks common in BMW engines, and wear on suspension components. Weaknesses over time might include the infotainment system becoming outdated and potential turbocharger issues. Regular fluid changes and addressing any warning signs promptly are crucial for maximizing the lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 BMW X2 comes with a decent array of built-in tech and safety features. The standard 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes BMW Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment features include a standard seven-speaker audio system, with optional upgrades to a Harman Kardon sound system. Driver-assistance features included standard dynamic cruise control, and optional features like park distance control, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
Optional tech features include Apple CarPlay compatibility, wireless charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, available through packages. Safety features include standard stability control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) provide crash-test ratings. The 2018 BMW X2 generally performed well in crash tests. While specific ratings may vary, it received good scores overall, enhancing its appeal as a safe and technologically equipped vehicle.

2018 BMW X2 Prices and Market Value

The 2018 BMW X2 had a starting MSRP of around $37,000 for the sDrive28i model, and roughly $39,000 for the xDrive28i. Current used market prices generally range from $20,000 to $28,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The X2 has experienced typical depreciation for a luxury vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, accident history, and the presence of desirable options packages. Lower mileage and a clean vehicle history command higher resale prices.

2018 BMW X2 Cost of Ownership

The 2018 BMW X2 is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are typical for a luxury vehicle, and fuel costs are reasonable given its performance. Maintenance, however, can be more expensive due to the higher cost of BMW parts and specialized service requirements. Repairs can be costly, especially for complex electronic or mechanical components. Long-term ownership costs are elevated compared to non-luxury brands. Budgeting for regular maintenance and potential repairs is essential.

How Does the 2018 BMW X2 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Vehicle?

The 2018 BMW X2 competes with other subcompact luxury SUVs like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Lexus UX. In terms of performance, the X2 offers engaging handling and a responsive engine, comparable to the GLA and Q3. The Lexus UX prioritizes fuel efficiency and comfort over outright performance.

The 2018 BMW X2 is ideal for buyers seeking a sporty and stylish subcompact SUV with a premium feel. It's a good choice for those who prioritize driving dynamics and design over maximum practicality. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used 2018 X2 can be a decent value if well-maintained. Opting for a model with the Premium or Technology package can enhance the ownership experience. However, prospective buyers should be aware of potential maintenance costs and consider alternatives if reliability is a primary concern. Thorough inspection before purchase is highly recommended.

Great medium size suv with exceptional handling

My x drive diesel gives me 14.5 - 15km per liter which is exceptional and handles like a sports car. Run flats are hard but not an issue. There seems to be a issue with the engine mountings as both x2 cars I had and have, have had to have them replaced with the new design engine mountings. No major issues.

Oops, a wannabe suv

Found my 2018 BMW X2 at a local Dealership, great trade in. Not very reliable. Had to replace both oxygen sensors twice within 6 mos and just simple driving went through 3 tires, blowouts. During the winter the car had front strut failures on both sides. She does have AWD but I do not recommend driving this suv in the winter, low clearance and not great for snow. Probably won’t consider newer cars after this one.

My first luxury brand

I wanted a small suv which can be used as a daily commute and had good handling and performance when needed. It has been a good ride so far. Very functional and easy to use commands.

Great performance. Car wants to be driven

The car is nimble and fun to drive. Great steering, braking and acceleration. Car grips the road and is feels very safe. The side BMW badges make the car easy to recognize and stand out among the sea of small SUV's.

Rust after 25000 km

My BMW X2 got the rust just after 25000 km. Brakes of this car is horrible. I called BMW Canada and they do not cover the cost. The Newmarket dealership is the place that I bought the car, they also do not cover the cost. Why should I pay more for this type of expensive cars???!!!

This car is an absolute joy!

Extremely comfortable, handles beautifully, surprisingly good performance, very good looking, surprising fuel economy. My car is the rare and unusual "sunset orange metallic" color and it really stands out!

Upgraded from 2003 BMW 325i to 2018 BMW x2 xdrive!

Economical, well equipped, spacious, security and fun to drive! Switching to a SUV was the better thing ever and not sure if I will drive a car again! Being a long time BMW driver, the x2 wins my heart! Indeed, the ultimate driving machine!

Nimble sporty driving machine

I bought BMW X2, it is nimble and fun to drive, slim edgy shape not boxy, hot and trendy eye catcher, small on the outside but roomy inside, it is German and a BMW. The best part of the design is the BMW logos on the C pillars, very neat and exclusive. Power is surprisingly strong and fast. Interior LED all around light strips are always on, can pick colors, neat. Pretty much what I wanted. I scheduled to see a X3, but salesman brought up X2, never even heard of X2, but I was impressed. It is an 18 months used rental car 32K miles $25K at Enterprise, reasonable no bargain fixed price, looks and smells brand new. After driving big luxury MB, Jaguar, Cadillac and Hummer for decades, we wanted a smaller 4 seats car, maybe a smaller SUV but with some prestige, a total change in autos. Takes a little getting used to without all the luxury leather, wood, all features and soft comfy ride, but we still miss some luxury features, but in exchange, we got a nimble sporty driving machine. It has most of the modern features, but missing important things like iPhone map on screen, front and back sensors, folding mirrors, garage door opener. Backseats are fine for 6’ tall adults, outward vision is limited but okay, a bit too noisy and bumpy, price for being sporty. We had to buy sun visor extender, sun visors are too small for my wife, visors don’t cover setting sun for her, fine for 6’ tall me. At last moment, we had to choose between BMW X2 vs MB GLA, same price, we picked X2, mainly we want a paradigm shift in what we had for decades. MB would be a safe pick, had MB for decades. My first and last BMW was 320i 40 years ago, that was a super fun driving machine, I never expected to run into another fun driving machine again; have driven other heavier BMWs, they were not fun to drive, X2 is fun to drive. First few days we thought we picked the wrong car, I seriously considered returning X2, but as time went on, we like it very much, not Ò€œloveÒ€ yet. I think it made us feel younger, a little back to our yuppie disco days.
