Rating: 3.76

The 2001 Ford Focus marked Ford's entry into the compact car arena, replacing the Escort. Available in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles, it spanned model years 2000-2007 for the first generation. Key trims included the LX, SE, and ZTS/ZX3. New, prices ranged from approximately $12,000 to $17,000. Its popularity stemmed from its European-inspired styling, nimble handling, and fuel efficiency, offering a more modern alternative to its rivals.
The Good

The 2001 Ford Focus offered a blend of practicality and fun. Its responsive handling appealed to driving enthusiasts, while its fuel efficiency and affordable price made it a smart choice for budget-conscious buyers. The spacious interior and available features enhanced comfort, and the distinctive design set it apart from the competition. It offered practical functionality wrapped in a visually appealing package.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2001 Ford Focus include potential transmission issues (especially with the automatic), problems with the engine mounts, and some electrical glitches. Rust can also be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigating these issues and ensuring long-term reliability. Watch for signs of these problems during inspection.

What Problems Does the 2001 Ford Focus Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2001 Ford Focus often revolved around its automatic transmission. Many owners reported slipping, rough shifting, or outright failure, especially at higher mileage. Engine mount issues were also common, leading to excessive vibration and noise. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the power windows and locks, were also reported. Rust, particularly in areas prone to road salt, could be a long-term reliability concern, affecting body panels and undercarriage components.

Recalls for the 2001 Ford Focus addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel tank components and concerns with the front seat mounting brackets. Checking the vehicle's VIN with Ford's recall database is crucial to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Early model years (2000-2002) seemed to be more prone to some of these issues compared to later years, suggesting that Ford made some improvements in later iterations. However, regular maintenance and proactive repairs remain essential for long-term reliability of any used 2001 Ford Focus.

How long will the 2001 Ford Focus last?

With proper maintenance, a 2001 Ford Focus can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report achieving this milestone, but it heavily depends on consistent maintenance and driving habits. Neglecting oil changes, ignoring warning lights, and aggressive driving will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses include rust susceptibility, potential transmission failures, and the aforementioned engine mount and electrical issues. Regular inspections and proactive repairs are key to maximizing its lifespan and mitigating these potential problems. A well-maintained example can offer years of reliable service, while a neglected one will likely require costly repairs.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
This car got me through college. It wasn't fancy, but it was dependable and fuel-efficient. Had some issues with the power windows towards the end, but overall a solid little car.
Sarah M.
Bought this used for my daughter. It's safe and easy to drive. The gas mileage is great, which is important for a new driver. We've had to do some minor repairs, but nothing major so far.
Robert K.
Surprisingly spacious for a small car. I could comfortably fit four adults in it. The trunk space was also decent. Wish it had a little more power, though.
Negative Owner Reviews
David L.
It's a Ford Focus. It's not going to win any races, but it's a practical and affordable car. I've had it for years and it's been relatively trouble-free, aside from routine maintenance.
Emily R.
I liked the size of the Focus and how easy it was to park. The fuel economy was also a big plus. However, the interior felt a bit cheap and the ride wasn't always the smoothest.
Michael B.
Had a lot of trouble with the transmission on this car. It started slipping around 100,000 miles. Ended up having to replace it, which was a costly repair. Otherwise, it was an okay car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2001 Ford Focus offered basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio, and some trims offered a CD player. More advanced features like navigation or Bluetooth connectivity were not available. Driver-assistance features were minimal, limited to standard power steering and brakes. Safety features included front airbags as standard, with optional side airbags available on some trims. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were also an optional safety feature.

In terms of crash-test ratings, the 2001 Ford Focus generally performed well in government crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it a good rating for frontal and side impact protection. However, specific ratings may vary depending on the body style and the presence of optional safety equipment. While it lacked the advanced tech of modern vehicles, its safety features were adequate for its era, especially when equipped with optional ABS and side airbags. The absence of advanced driver-assistance systems means drivers must rely on their own skills and attentiveness.

2001 Ford Focus Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2001 Ford Focus had a price range of approximately $12,000 to $17,000, depending on the trim level and options. In today's used market, prices typically range from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Focus has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, mileage, and reputation for some reliability issues. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has any outstanding recalls. Examples with low mileage and a documented service history will command higher prices. High mileage and any signs of neglect will decrease its value significantly.

2001 Ford Focus Cost of Ownership

The 2001 Ford Focus is generally considered economical to own, especially if purchased at a low price. Insurance costs are typically low due to its age and value. Fuel economy is decent, contributing to lower running costs. However, potential repair costs can be unpredictable. While some parts are affordable, unexpected issues like transmission problems can be expensive. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs and ensure long-term reliability. Overall, it's an affordable option if well-maintained but can become costly if neglected.

2001 Ford Focus Insurance

Insurance for a 2001 Ford Focus is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2001 Ford Focus Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2001 Ford Focus competed against rivals like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda Protege. In terms of performance, the Focus offered more engaging handling than the Corolla but lagged behind the Civic Si. Feature-wise, it was comparable to its competitors, offering similar basic amenities. However, the Focus's reliability was generally considered lower than that of the Civic and Corolla, which are known for their longevity. Price-wise, the Focus was often more affordable than the Civic and Corolla, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

Alternatives to the 2001 Ford Focus include the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla for their superior reliability. The Mazda Protege offered similar driving dynamics but with better reliability than the Focus. The Nissan Sentra could also be considered as a reliable and affordable option. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on the buyer's priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Civic or Corolla are better choices. If driving enjoyment is a priority, the Mazda Protege is a strong contender. If affordability is the main concern, and one is willing to accept some risk on reliability, the Focus remains a viable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2001 Ford Focus a Good Hatchback?

The 2001 Ford Focus is ideal for budget-minded individuals seeking affordable transportation, especially if they appreciate a car with responsive handling. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained example with a clean service history can be a good value. However, potential buyers should be aware of the potential reliability issues and factor in potential repair costs. It's generally best to purchase a lower-mileage example that has been well-cared for. Avoid examples with signs of neglect or transmission problems. Considering its age, it's only worth buying as a used vehicle. A thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended before purchase.

Bought this used for my daughter. It's safe and easy to drive. The gas mileage is great, which is important for a new driver. We've had to do some minor repairs, but nothing major so far.

Not the most exciting, but gets the job done

It's a Ford Focus. It's not going to win any races, but it's a practical and affordable car. I've had it for years and it's been relatively trouble-free, aside from routine maintenance.

Small and Fuel Efficient

I liked the size of the Focus and how easy it was to park. The fuel economy was also a big plus. However, the interior felt a bit cheap and the ride wasn't always the smoothest.

Transmission Issues

Had a lot of trouble with the transmission on this car. It started slipping around 100,000 miles. Ended up having to replace it, which was a costly repair. Otherwise, it was an okay car.

Decent car for the price

For what I paid for it used, it was a good value. It was a little rough around the edges, but reliable enough for my daily commute. Had to replace the alternator once, but that's to be expected with an older car.

Roomier than it looks

Surprisingly spacious for a small car. I could comfortably fit four adults in it. The trunk space was also decent. Wish it had a little more power, though.

Head Gasket Problems

Loved the car initially, but had major head gasket issues. Apparently, it's a common problem with this year model. Cost me a lot of money to fix. Be careful if you're considering buying one.

Perfect First Car

I learned how to drive in this car. It was forgiving and easy to handle. The compact size made it great for navigating city streets. I have fond memories of this vehicle.

Rust Issues

Living in the Northeast, rust was a major problem with this car. The undercarriage started to rust pretty badly after a few years. Something to keep in mind if you live in an area with harsh winters.
