Available as a sedan or hatchback, the Focus offered a range of models from 2012-2018. Key trims include the S, SE, Titanium, and sporty ST. The 2014 model stood out for its attractive styling, available advanced technology, and relatively affordable pricing, typically ranging from around $17,000 new to now significantly less on the used market. It was known for its responsive handling.
The Good

The 2014 Ford Focus offered a mix of advantages. Practically, it boasted good fuel efficiency and a comfortable ride for daily commuting. Emotionally, its stylish design and available sporty ST trim appealed to drivers seeking a more engaging experience. While reliability could be a concern, its affordability and overall value made it an attractive option.

What Problems Does the 2014 Ford Focus Have?

The most frequently reported problem for the 2014 Ford Focus centers around its automatic transmission, specifically the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission. Many owners have experienced slipping, shuddering, harsh shifting, and delayed acceleration. This issue can lead to costly repairs and has been the subject of multiple lawsuits and recalls. While Ford has issued software updates and extended warranties to address the problem, it remains a significant concern.
Other common issues include problems with the climate control system, such as the air conditioning failing or blowing hot air intermittently. Some owners have also reported electrical issues, including problems with the MyFord Touch infotainment system, sensors, and other electronic components. Recalls have been issued for various problems, including fuel delivery modules and powertrain control modules. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the transmission issues, which can affect the vehicle's overall lifespan and resale value. Owners should carefully inspect the transmission and review the vehicle's maintenance history before purchasing a used 2014 Ford Focus.

How long will the 2014 Ford Focus last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Ford Focus can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. However, the longevity heavily depends on addressing the known transmission issues. Cars with diligent maintenance and timely repairs to the transmission may last longer. Weaknesses over time predominantly revolve around the PowerShift transmission. Ignoring regular maintenance like fluid changes can exacerbate these problems, significantly reducing the lifespan. Rust can also become a factor in regions with harsh winters.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
I've owned this Focus for several years and it's been a great daily driver. Fuel economy is excellent and it's surprisingly comfortable for longer trips. Only had to do routine maintenance so far.
Sarah K.
The best thing about this car is the gas mileage. I can get over 35 mpg on the highway. It's also a pretty comfortable car for long drives.
Michael R.
Perfect for city driving. Easy to park and gets great gas mileage. Not the most powerful engine, but it's adequate for most situations.
Negative Owner Reviews
Emily B.
Bought this used and it's been a solid car. The interior is a bit basic, but it gets me where I need to go. The handling is decent and it's easy to park.
David L.
I've had some issues with the transmission, which seems to be a common problem with this year. Other than that, it's a decent car for the price. Do your research on the transmission before buying.
Jessica T.
The interior feels a bit cheap. The seats are not the most comfortable, and the materials feel outdated. However, the car is reliable and fuel-efficient.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Ford Focus offered a decent array of technology and safety features for its time. Base models included a standard audio system with an auxiliary input. Higher trims, like the SE and Titanium, featured the MyFord Touch infotainment system with a touchscreen display, navigation, and smartphone integration via SYNC. The MyFord Touch system, while innovative, was often criticized for its lag and complexity.
Available driver-assistance features included a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Standard safety features comprised antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist. The 2014 Ford Focus received generally positive crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The NHTSA awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS gave the Focus a "Good" rating in several crash tests, making it a relatively safe choice in its class.

2014 Ford Focus Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Ford Focus had a starting price of around $17,000 for the base S trim, while higher trims like the Titanium could reach over $25,000. As a used car, the 2014 Focus now typically ranges from $5,000 to $12,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to age and the aforementioned transmission issues, which heavily impact resale value. A well-maintained Focus with documented repairs to the transmission will hold its value better. The ST model, due to its sporty nature, generally commands a higher resale price.

2014 Ford Focus Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Ford Focus generally offers affordable insurance rates and excellent fuel economy, making it economical in those areas. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly if the PowerShift transmission requires attention. Addressing the transmission issues can significantly impact long-term ownership costs. Routine maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively inexpensive, but unexpected transmission or electrical repairs can quickly make ownership costly. Overall, it can be economical if major repairs are avoided.

2014 Ford Focus Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Ford Focus is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Ford Focus Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Ford Focus competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Focus, especially the ST, offered a more engaging driving experience than the Corolla or Civic. Feature-wise, it was comparable, although the MyFord Touch system was often less intuitive than competitors' infotainment systems. Reliability is where the Focus lagged, with the transmission issues being a major drawback compared to the more reliable Civic and Corolla. Price-wise, the Focus was generally competitive.
Alternatives to the 2014 Focus include the Mazda3, which offers similar driving dynamics but with better overall reliability. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are also excellent choices for their renowned reliability and fuel efficiency, though they may not be as exciting to drive. The Hyundai Elantra provides good value and features, but its reliability is still generally better than the Focus. Ultimately, if reliability is a top priority, the Civic, Corolla, or Mazda3 are better options.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Ford Focus a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Ford Focus can be a decent choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking an affordable and stylish compact car. It's ideal for those who prioritize driving dynamics and available technology over long-term reliability. However, it's crucial to thoroughly inspect the vehicle for transmission issues before purchasing a used model. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. The ST trim is worth considering for enthusiasts, but be prepared for higher running costs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Otherwise, with careful consideration, a 2014 Focus can be a worthwhile purchase.
