What Is a Vehicle Safety Recall?

A recall is issued when a manufacturer or safety authority determines that a vehicle or component may contain a safety-related defect or may not meet an applicable safety standard. Recall records can explain the affected system, possible consequences, recommended remedy, and how owners should obtain the repair.

Recall Number Campaign or reference number used to identify the recall
Affected Component The vehicle system, part, or equipment involved
Safety Consequence The risk that may occur if the defect is not corrected
Manufacturer Remedy The inspection, repair, replacement, or software update offered
Owner Instructions Notification details, contact information, and next steps

Safety Recall

A formal action involving a safety defect or noncompliance. A manufacturer remedy is normally provided through its authorized service network.

Reported Defect or Complaint

A concern reported by an owner or identified during investigation. A complaint does not automatically mean that a recall has been issued.

Technical Service Bulletin

Manufacturer guidance for diagnosing or repairing a known condition. A service bulletin is not necessarily a safety recall or free repair.

What to Do When a Recall Appears

A recall should be verified using the complete VIN because campaigns may apply only to certain production dates, plants, trims, or components.

  • Confirm that the VIN on the report matches the dashboard, door label, title, and registration.
  • Record the recall number, affected component, consequence, and recommended remedy.
  • Contact an authorized dealership for the vehicle manufacturer and provide the complete VIN.
  • Ask whether the recall repair has already been completed or still requires service.
  • Keep repair orders, invoices, and recall-completion documentation with the vehicle records.
  • Recheck the VIN periodically because new recalls may be announced after purchase.
