What Is a Salvage Check?

A salvage check looks for records indicating that a vehicle was declared a total loss, assigned a salvage or junk title, offered through a salvage auction, or associated with major damage. A salvage record can affect registration, financing, insurance, resale value, warranty eligibility, and the type of inspection required before road use.

No Available Salvage Record

No matching record in the available sources does not guarantee that the vehicle has never sustained major damage.

Salvage or Total-Loss Record

A matching title, insurance, auction, junk-yard, or recycler record deserves careful document and condition review.

Verify the Current Status

Check the current title, state records, repairs, inspection documents, and insurer requirements before purchase.

Salvage Title

Generally indicates that the vehicle was declared a total loss or substantially damaged under the rules of the issuing jurisdiction.

Rebuilt or Reconstructed Title

Usually means a previously salvaged vehicle was repaired and completed a required inspection or title process.

Junk or Nonrepairable Title

May indicate that the vehicle is intended for parts, scrap, or recycling and may not qualify for normal road registration.

What to Check Before Buying a Salvage or Rebuilt Vehicle

A repaired vehicle may look acceptable while still having structural, electrical, safety-system, corrosion, or documentation issues.

  • Verify the current title brand and registration eligibility with the applicable motor vehicle agency.
  • Obtain photographs and records showing the vehicle before and during repairs.
  • Compare the reported damage areas with the current body, frame, suspension, airbags, and electrical systems.
  • Arrange a structural, mechanical, and diagnostic inspection by qualified independent professionals.
  • Confirm whether airbags, seat-belt components, sensors, cameras, and driver-assistance systems were properly restored.
  • Ask insurers and lenders about coverage, valuation, inspection, and financing restrictions before purchase.
