What Is a Vehicle Theft Check?

A theft check searches available records for reports that a vehicle was stolen, missing, recovered, or otherwise associated with a theft event. It can help buyers avoid purchasing a vehicle that may still be wanted by law enforcement or that has unresolved ownership, title, damage, insurance, or registration issues.

No Available Theft Record

No matching record in the available databases does not prove that the vehicle has never been stolen.

Active or Unresolved Theft Report

Do not proceed with a purchase until the record is verified and cleared by the appropriate law-enforcement agency.

Recovered Vehicle Record

A recovered vehicle may still require review for damage, missing parts, title issues, insurance claims, or registration restrictions.

What a Theft Record May Show

Vehicle-specific records appear after a VIN is entered. The fields below reflect information commonly included in stolen-vehicle and recovery records.

Active Theft Record

The vehicle may still be listed as stolen or wanted. Contact the reporting agency and do not take possession until the issue is resolved.

Recovered or Closed Record

The vehicle was reported recovered or the theft case was closed, but ownership, damage, title, and insurance records should still be checked.

Status Unknown or Incomplete

The available record does not clearly establish whether the theft report remains active or was later resolved.

What to Do When a Theft Record Appears

A theft flag should be treated seriously, even when the seller claims that the vehicle was recovered or the record is outdated.

  • Confirm the VIN on the vehicle, title, registration, seller documents, and report.
  • Contact the law-enforcement agency named in the record using independently verified contact information.
  • Ask whether the vehicle is still listed as stolen and whether the case has been officially cleared.
  • Verify that the seller is the lawful owner and has authority to transfer the vehicle.
  • Review the current title, insurance-loss history, salvage records, damage records, and recovery documentation.
  • Inspect the ignition, locks, keys, wiring, glass, body panels, airbags, and missing or replaced components.
