The 2021 BMW X7 is a full-size luxury SUV, representing BMW's entry into the three-row SUV market. Introduced in 2019, the X7 offers a blend of luxury, performance, and practicality. It's available in trims like the xDrive40i, xDrive M50i, and Alpina XB7. The pricing range generally spans from $75,000 to over $140,000 depending on the trim and options. Its spacious interior, powerful engine options, and advanced technology make it a popular choice for families seeking a premium SUV experience.
The Good

The 2021 BMW X7 excels in performance with its potent engines, offering exhilarating acceleration. Comfort is paramount, featuring a luxurious and spacious cabin. Design-wise, it commands attention with its bold styling. From a practical standpoint, it provides ample cargo space and seating for seven. While not the most fuel-efficient, the X7 offers a premium experience for those prioritizing luxury and performance.

The Bad

The 2021 BMW X7, while luxurious, can be expensive to maintain. Potential weaknesses include complex electronics which can lead to issues, and the air suspension system which could require costly repairs. The sheer size can make it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Fuel economy is also a concern for some buyers. Be sure to carefully inspect for any signs of wear or electronic glitches before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2021 BMW X7 Have?

While the 2021 BMW X7 is generally reliable, some frequently reported problems include issues with the iDrive system (glitches, slow response), and occasional malfunctions in the air suspension. Some owners have reported issues with the cooling system, leading to potential overheating. Early model years (2019-2020) had more reported problems with electronic systems and sensor malfunctions. Recalls for the 2021 model year have primarily focused on issues such as potential problems with the front passenger airbag, software glitches that could affect the stability control system, and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns center around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The air suspension, in particular, is known to be a potential source of expensive repairs as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including fluid checks and timely servicing of the air suspension components, is crucial for mitigating these concerns. Owners should also be diligent about addressing any warning lights or unusual behavior promptly to prevent more significant problems down the road. Staying up-to-date with software updates can also address some of the electronic gremlins reported by owners.

How long will the 2021 BMW X7 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 BMW X7 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance, especially regarding the air suspension, cooling system, and electronics. Common weaknesses that emerge over time include potential failures of the air suspension components, increased likelihood of electronic malfunctions, and wear and tear on interior components. Neglecting regular servicing can significantly shorten its lifespan and increase the likelihood of costly repairs. Those who adhere to the manufacturer's recommended service intervals and address issues promptly are more likely to achieve higher mileage and longer vehicle lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 BMW X7 boasts a wealth of built-in tech and safety features. The iDrive 7.0 infotainment system features a 12.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a digital instrument cluster. Entertainment is enhanced by a standard Harman Kardon sound system, with a Bowers & Wilkins system available as an option. Driver-assistance features include lane departure warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features include parking assistant plus, lane-keeping assist, and a head-up display. Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS are generally good, though specifics can vary year to year. The X7 provides a comprehensive suite of technologies designed for convenience, entertainment, and safety. The Parking Assistant Plus, an optional feature, includes a surround-view camera system and automated parking capabilities. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds features like lane keep assist with side collision avoidance and traffic jam assist. The advanced voice control allows for natural language input for various vehicle functions. The optional rear-seat entertainment system includes dual 10.2-inch touchscreens for passengers. Overall, the 2021 X7 is well-equipped with technology to enhance the driving experience and promote safety. It's important to check the official IIHS and NHTSA websites for the most up-to-date crash-test ratings.

2021 BMW X7 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 BMW X7 ranged from approximately $75,000 for the xDrive40i to over $140,000 for the Alpina XB7. Current used market prices vary widely depending on mileage, condition, and trim, generally ranging from $55,000 to $100,000+. The X7 depreciates at a moderate rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options. Models with lower mileage and a clean Carfax report command higher prices. The Alpina XB7 tends to hold its value better due to its exclusivity. Demand for luxury SUVs remains strong, which helps to maintain resale values.

2021 BMW X7 Cost of Ownership

The 2021 BMW X7 is a costly vehicle to own long-term. Insurance premiums are typically high due to its value and repair costs. Fuel consumption is significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance, including scheduled servicing and potential repairs, can be expensive due to the complex engineering and premium parts. Expect higher costs for tires, brakes, and other wear items. The X7 is not an economical choice, and owners should budget accordingly for higher-than-average ownership expenses.

How Does the 2021 BMW X7 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 BMW X7 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Audi Q7/Q8, Land Rover Range Rover, and Cadillac Escalade. In terms of performance, the X7's engine options are comparable, offering strong acceleration. Features are also similar, with all models offering advanced technology and luxury amenities. Reliability is a mixed bag; the X7 has some reported issues, while the GLS has a slightly better reputation. The Escalade offers more cargo space. Price-wise, the X7 is generally in line with its German rivals.
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a strong competitor, offering a similarly luxurious experience with potentially better reliability. The Audi Q7/Q8 provides a sportier driving experience but may lack the X7's outright luxury. The Cadillac Escalade boasts a bolder design and more cargo capacity. The Land Rover Range Rover offers superior off-road capabilities.
A 'better' alternative depends on individual priorities. If reliability is paramount, the GLS might be a better choice. If cargo space is a key concern, the Escalade is a strong contender. If off-road capability is desired, the Range Rover is the clear winner. The X7 remains a compelling choice for those who prioritize a blend of luxury, performance, and brand prestige, but it's essential to consider potential reliability issues.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 BMW X7 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2021 BMW X7 is ideal for affluent families seeking a luxurious and spacious three-row SUV with strong performance and advanced technology. Whether it's worth buying depends on your budget and priorities. A used X7 can offer significant savings compared to a new model, but a thorough inspection and maintenance history are crucial. The xDrive40i offers a good balance of performance and fuel economy, while the M50i provides a more exhilarating driving experience. The Alpina XB7 caters to those seeking the ultimate in performance and exclusivity. If you prioritize reliability above all else, exploring alternatives like the Mercedes-Benz GLS might be wise. However, if you value the BMW driving experience and are prepared for potential maintenance costs, the X7 is a compelling choice.

Amazing Vehicle

I could not be more happy with this vehicle. It is amazingly quiet and comfortable, but still fun to drive. It has tons of space and the interior is impeccable. The technology is top-notch and intuitive. This one is the turbo I6 and is faster than it feels (so smooth and quiet), but lacks the “hold your breath” acceleration of the V8.

Luxurious

I love this vehicle! The cold water package, assisted driving, and executive package are great. The car drives very well for what I wanted and the 3rd row seating isn’t bad either. I had no issues getting in the back and I like how the 2nd row stops and adjust once it feels your knees. I’m not sure I’ll get tired of this car anytime soon.

Best SUV I've ever been in

X7 M50i is beautiful outside and inside. I never imagined so much technology in a care - truly mid blowing. It is not overly complicated, rather quite enjoyable to interact with. V8 engine is a beast and sound at start-up and with hitting the gas is a thunderous hum. I lover this SUV!

2021 X7M is a beast!

The X7M is the finest luxury SUV on the planet. BMW is amazing and really achieved near perfection with this car. The only recommendation I would make is to have the hitch as standard equipment. I have the hitch as it is a necessity for me, but should be standard equipment on an SUV of this class.

Great SUV, with the luxury of a car.

This SUV meets all of the intended needs. When you get in, it makes you want to keep driving. With the look of a truck and the ride of a luxury car. I made the right decision, I love it.

Smile Every Time I Drive It

My BMW X7 4.0 is a piece of art and meticulous engineering. It is amazing how quick the V6 is and I have been getting 27-28 mpg on Pennsylvania highway driving. The vehicle is a highway super cruiser with an exceptionally smooth and quiet ride. The upgraded seats are great with limitless adjustments and massage. With the Harmon Kardon audio system I am hearing extraordinary detail in music. The interior design is beautiful, my wife loves the crystal gear knob. My grand kids think they are riding Space Mountain at night with the lighted moon roof and ambient lighting. On top of that it is “made in America”. Even the “My BMW” speech recognition system is responsive and useful, something I could not say in the recent Audi and Lexus vehicles I owned. I smile every time I fire up the engine and hit the road!
