Rating: 4.18
Based on 80 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Chevrolet HHR (Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, compact, multi-purpose vehicle with a wagon body style. Produced from 2006 to 2011, the 2007 model year offered trims like the LS, LT, and sporty SS. New pricing ranged from approximately $16,000 to $23,000. What Problems Does the 2007 Chevrolet HHR Have?

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR, like many vehicles, has some frequently reported problems. Electrical issues are common, including malfunctioning power windows, door locks, and occasionally, issues with the anti-theft system. Suspension components, especially the front struts and sway bar links, can wear out relatively quickly, leading to a noisy and less comfortable ride. Engine issues, while less frequent, can include problems with the timing chain, particularly in the 2.2L engine, which might require costly repairs.
Transmission problems, though not widespread, have also been reported. Rust is a concern, especially in areas where road salt is used during winter; check the undercarriage and body panels for signs of corrosion.
Recalls for the 2007 HHR have included issues related to the ignition switch (part of a larger GM recall), which could cause the engine to stall and disable safety features like airbags. Additionally, there were recalls related to the power steering system in some models. It is essential to check the vehicle’s VIN for any outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to these issues, so a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended.

How long will the 2007 Chevrolet HHR last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Chevrolet HHR can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting scheduled maintenance can lead to premature wear and tear, especially on the suspension, engine, and transmission. The electrical system remains a weak point over time, with issues like power window failures becoming more common as the vehicle ages. Rust can also significantly impact longevity, particularly in regions with harsh climates. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing issues promptly are crucial for maximizing the lifespan of a 2007 HHR.

This is the worst car I ever had. It's horrible in the snow! I was always getting stuck in the snow, and actually totalled it in an accident because of snow. The air bags never went off and I hit a semi. The windshield cracked easily and was replaced several times as well as tires and shocks. Car was too low to the ground and had alot of issues.

This car got treat gas mileage- you can put all seats down an haul alot in it. Also will handle 8ft boards if need be. Nice ride on long trips. Didnt like the lowness of it you had to watch where you drove over.
Car Guy
I checked this vehicle out at the dealer. I knew more about it than the sales lady! Ridiculous "GM" badge on each side, something some "bean counter" at GM insisted on that looks stupid and meant to remind you that you are driving something from GM???? Interior is cheap and fit and finish on the interior is bad. Outside sheetmetal is in very nice.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR offered basic tech and entertainment features for its time. Standard entertainment included an AM/FM stereo with a CD player. Higher trims offered an upgraded audio system. There were no advanced driver-assistance features available in 2007 HHR models. Safety features included standard front airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available. Side-curtain airbags were optional on higher trims.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash-test ratings vary, but generally, the HHR received good ratings for frontal crash protection and mixed ratings for side-impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also provided crash test ratings, and these should be consulted for a comprehensive safety evaluation.
Optional features included a sunroof, leather seats, and remote keyless entry. The lack of modern tech features like Bluetooth connectivity or a navigation system is noticeable by today's standards. While it offers basic safety, its driver assistance technology is limited, making it essential to drive cautiously and defensively.

2007 Chevrolet HHR Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Chevrolet HHR had a price range of approximately $16,000 to $23,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The HHR has depreciated significantly due to its age, known reliability issues, and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, accident history, and geographical location. Models with lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices, but ultimately, the HHR's resale value is relatively low compared to some of its competitors.

2007 Chevrolet HHR Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR is generally considered economical to own, especially considering its age and purchase price. Insurance costs are typically low due to its value and safety ratings. Fuel economy is decent for its class. Maintenance costs can be moderate; however, potential repairs, especially concerning electrical and suspension issues, can increase long-term ownership expenses. Routine maintenance is crucial to keep costs down. Overall, the HHR is a budget-friendly option, but budgeting for potential repairs is wise.

2007 Chevrolet HHR Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Chevrolet HHR is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Chevrolet HHR Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR competed with vehicles like the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Scion xB, and Kia Soul (though the Soul came later). In terms of performance, the HHR was comparable to the PT Cruiser but lagged behind the xB, which offered a slightly more engaging driving experience. Features were fairly basic across the segment at the time, with the HHR offering a similar level of equipment.
Reliability is where the HHR falls short compared to the Scion xB, known for its Toyota-backed dependability. The PT Cruiser also suffered from reliability woes. Price-wise, the HHR was generally competitive.
Alternatives to the 2007 HHR include the Scion xB for its superior reliability and slightly better driving dynamics. The Honda Element, although a bit pricier, offers more versatility and a reputation for longevity. If retro styling is a must, the PT Cruiser is another option, but be aware of its similar reliability concerns. Ultimately, the Scion xB is a better choice if reliability is a priority.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Chevrolet HHR a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a unique, retro-styled vehicle with decent cargo space. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential reliability issues and are willing to perform regular maintenance. Purchasing a well-maintained, lower-mileage example with a comprehensive service history is crucial. The LT trim offers more features than the base LS. However, given its age and potential problems, thoroughly inspect the vehicle before purchasing. Consider alternatives like the Scion xB for better reliability or the Honda Element for increased versatility.

2007 HHR LS A Million Dollar Car

It's great on gas mileage. A million dollar car if you can overlook the blind spots. Easily pushed around road in windy conditions. A fight actually to keep it in line, top is too light for windy days. When one thing starts falling apart and replaced definitely be prepared to have more follow. Light covers are terrible. Windows easily crack. Hub caps are plastic. Won't stay on, or crack. 3rd time replacing them. No way to check the transmission fluid unless you take it in. It's under the car. Yes, there is a leak, an oil leak as well. You can't just Easily check or add the tranny fluid as needed. Such a pain. Altenator ,brakes struts/shocks/tie rods all at once. When it leaves you walking and it will be ready to pay major bucks for towing, parts, labor. It's a million dollar car alright & will cost every last penny you have to keep it going.

Understated cool

I bought the plain, zero frills LS new, in '07. 128K miles and counting. I haul my drums all over metro Denver and it fits all my gear, perfectly. It averages 24-28 mpg, per tank. I've lost track of how many times people have mistaken it for a PT Cruiser. It's no pocket rocket but then, I don't need to drive that fast.

Chevy HHR LT 2 Review

Overall we enjoyed the 7 years we had with this vehicle. The 2.4 Ecotec engine is VERY reliable. Never overheated and always started fine. Kept the oil changed religiously, too. We only had to replace the serpentine belt and the alternator in 7 years. Not bad for a car assembled in Mexico! This HHR had the typical brake and suspension issues and this is where the vast majority of repair funds went ….. so be aware that it pays to buy quality suspension and brake parts from the get-go instead of trying to save a few bucks. Highly recommend this little crossover SUV!

First car and it was great.

This was my first car and I dont regret it. If it wasn't for me getting a new car as a gift from my brother I would have kept it through college. I travel for soccer 4 times a week one hour away sometimes farther and its never let me down.

Love my HHR

I liked the retro styling of the HHR. After 11 years and 165,000 miles my HHR is still going strong. This car scores big on reliability. Outside of the usual maintenance of oil changes, new tires, timing belt, etc., no major problems with my HHR. Great cargo space, the storage compartment on dash works well. The remote start is a nice feature. It's been an all around great vehicle.
