2008 Chevrolet HHR Review: Problem Ridden Year For The Quirky Compact SUV

Rating: 4.29
Based on 64 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025

The 2008 Chevrolet HHR, short for Heritage High Roof, is a retro-styled compact wagon inspired by the 1949 Chevy Suburban. Produced from 2006 to 2011, the 2008 model year offered trims like the LS, 1LT, 2LT, and the sporty SS. It stood out with its distinctive design, reminiscent of classic American styling, and its practical cargo space. New pricing ranged approximately from $16,000 to $23,000, varying by trim and options.

The Good

The 2008 Chevrolet HHR offers a unique blend of retro design and practicality. It appeals to emotional buyers with its nostalgic styling. For practical buyers, it boasts decent fuel efficiency, especially with the base engine, ample cargo space, and affordability on the used market. While not a performance powerhouse, the SS trim provides a more engaging driving experience.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR include potential electrical issues, particularly with the power windows and door locks. Some owners have reported problems with the powertrain, including the automatic transmission. The interior materials can feel cheap, and the ride quality can be harsh on rough roads. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2008 Chevrolet HHR Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 Chevrolet HHR include electrical issues, specifically with the power windows, door locks, and sometimes the radio. Some owners have experienced problems with the automatic transmission, including slipping or erratic shifting. The engine's timing chain can also be a point of concern, requiring replacement in some cases. Another common issue is the premature failure of the window regulators. There have been recalls related to the ignition switch (affecting a broad range of GM vehicles), which could cause the engine to stall. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the durability of the interior components and the potential for rust, especially in areas with road salt. Some earlier model years (2006-2007) had issues with the fuel system and sensor malfunctions more frequently reported than later years. Always check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recall notices before purchase.

How long will the 2008 Chevrolet HHR last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Chevrolet HHR can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15+ years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on regular maintenance, including timely oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing issues promptly. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, particularly around the rear wheel wells and undercarriage. The plastic interior components may also show wear and tear. Engine and transmission issues can arise if maintenance is neglected. Overall, consistent care is crucial for maximizing the HHR's lifespan.

CONS-Bought in (3/2010) w/26,000mi. and still have with 228,000MI (6/2022) replaced rotors 8X. Brakes 3X. Wheel bearings 2X. Tires wore exceptionally hard . -Electrical problems within the car. -Door locks would get stuck. -No storage in front. -Not a smooth ride. -After the first year, the gas mileage went from 35MPG. to 25MPG. Could never figure out. -The sunroof, we use very rarely, exploded out one day when going down the highway. My husband almost wrecked. Fortunately, the sunroof sliding door was closed. -Steering stabilizers needed to be replaced 2 X PROS- LOVE THE LOOK! -Great in snow. My husband would leave his 4WD F150 SILVERADO home and take my car instead. -Only left me set 1X. -LOVE THE AIR CONDITIONER! -Love the glove box in the dashboard. Never went out like a lot have. -Never any rust. - Love all the room in back with seats down! - Has a lot of get up and go. No problem getting out in traffic or going up steep hills. (But it is the steep hills that kept ruining the rotors and brakes)

I have moved between states and had lots of room for immediate necessities. It may look small but the interior has so much room. Front passenger seat folds flat so I can ever carry ladders and lumber when needed. It is not comfortable for tall or large people but I'm ok with that.
Negative Owner Reviews

This car does what it should. I have had it for 3 years and i have to admit it grew on me. I initially thought it was a grandmas car, which it probably still is but i have found it very reliable. I have gotten a straight pipe exhaust and it definitely helps give the car character. I would reccomend it to someone looking for a daily driver.
Benenz116
Roomy for a small vehicle. Fits the things I need to fit. Small, yet economic, its a good car for long commutes to work.
Concerned Renter
I rented this car for one day and quickly became eager to return it! I'm not a car genius in any way, but I am aware of when I don't feel safe in a vehicle. The performance and handling are fine, gas mileage is average, and styling is great...but combine it with short 12 inch windows high off the ground, it becomes a hazard. I'm a tall person, almost 6', I sit up as straight as possible when I drive and adjust my mirrors just as I should. However, I nearly drove into a pickup truck on the highway because I couldn't see his headlights below the window line. We had just passed an exit, and I thought the driver had left, so I was trying to merge back into the right lane. Where the frame comes down on each side of the front windshield provides about an 8" blindspot, and between each window is about a 5" blindspot. The control knobs seem to be slightly out of reach, they sit lower on the dash underneath the large vents. Overall, not necessarily a bad car, but feel MUCH safer in my sedan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Chevrolet HHR offered relatively basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered features like a premium sound system with MP3 compatibility. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, and front airbags. Side-impact airbags were optional.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the specific test. The HHR generally received good scores in frontal crash tests but lower scores in side-impact tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also rated the HHR, with scores varying by year. It's recommended to check specific crash-test ratings for the 2008 model year on the NHTSA and IIHS websites to get the most accurate information. Optional features included remote start and a sunroof. The SS trim had unique performance features like a sport-tuned suspension and performance seats.

2008 Chevrolet HHR Prices and Market Value

The 2008 Chevrolet HHR had a starting MSRP of around $16,000 when new, with higher trims reaching approximately $23,000. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The HHR has depreciated significantly due to its age and the fact that it is no longer in production. SS models generally command a higher price due to their performance and rarity.

2008 Chevrolet HHR Cost of Ownership

Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate, but it's essential to address issues promptly to prevent more significant problems. Replacement parts are generally readily available and relatively inexpensive. Long-term ownership costs can increase if major repairs are needed, but overall, it's a budget-friendly option.

2008 Chevrolet HHR Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Chevrolet HHR is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Chevrolet HHR Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2008 Chevrolet HHR competed with vehicles like the Chrysler PT Cruiser, Kia Soul (later models), and Scion xB. In terms of performance, the HHR SS offered better performance than most of its rivals. Features-wise, it was comparable to the PT Cruiser, but lacked some of the modern tech found in later Soul and xB models. Reliability is where the HHR lagged behind, with more reported issues than the Scion xB, and perhaps similar to the PT Cruiser.

Price-wise, the HHR was competitive, especially on the used market. If reliability is a primary concern, the Scion xB (later models) would be a better alternative. If a retro style is desired, the PT Cruiser is similar but comes with its own set of reliability issues. The Kia Soul (post-2009) offers a more modern and reliable option with similar cargo capacity. Ultimately, the HHR's appeal lies in its unique styling and affordability, but potential buyers should be aware of its reliability drawbacks.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Chevrolet HHR a Good Wagon?

The 2008 Chevrolet HHR is ideal for buyers seeking an affordable, retro-styled vehicle with decent cargo space. It's worth buying used if the price is right and a thorough inspection reveals no major issues. It is best suited for those who value its unique design and are willing to accept potential reliability concerns. The SS trim is a fun option for those seeking a bit more performance. However, prioritizing a well-maintained example with a complete service history is crucial. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Scion xB or a newer Kia Soul.

I bought my car used and loved it from the go. Loved the style and for me the room was great. I traveled a lot in my car with two kids and the car never failed me. It was t-bone and sadly it was totaled out. It had over 200 thousand miles on it.

Pretty good

Grandparents bought the Chevy HHR LS panel brand new in 2008 and I just changed it into my name being my grandma gave it to me for work. I love the quirks it has and I'm able to drive from the middle of it to deliver mail. I've had a few customers that I deliver on their route that have complimented the looks of it.

HHR- Abbreviation for Horrible Head Room

The HHR is a trendy, retro-cool little buggy from a styling standpoint. Its positive attributes from my experience are as follows: •Offers lots of storage space especially with rear seats down. I've hauled up to 700 lbs of cargo with no issues. •The ecotec 2.2 motor offers good power and torque, combined with great fuel economy. I can eek up into the high 40-mpg! range straight cruising on the highway. •It handles and corners surprisingly well with a tight feel and little body roll. •The side view mirrors are large and fairly square, affording a good field of view. However the car also has a few major drawbacks as follows: •I'm fairly tall at 6'1 and the visibility outside is horrible with a low cut windshield, thick pillars everywhere and small windows. • There is no dome light up front, the only one is far back in the cargo area. The only lighting up front is the mirror-mounted map lights which are inadequate. •No keyed entry into tailgate nor into passenger door. • No locking glovebox or gas door. • Radio controls and most instrument panel buttons & switches are a haphazard layout. •The door pockets are a joke, are half-moon shape and hold little. •There is no center console, meaning very few places to put your junk. •The engine bay offers poor access to many components due to the 1940s hood and fender styling. •The interior plastic is dime-store cheap.

The SS Model is awesome quick fun car

This car is different from the other HHRs it is one of the most comfortable seats. Who designs car seats sometimes I think they are into torture. The HHR SS has been a great car for me.

It’s a great for anything car.

It did just about everything we needed it to do. Currently needs a little work I can’t do. It has a great cargo area. Seats fold down helps extend area.
