Rating: 4.04
Based on 98 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV that marked Dodge's entry into this popular segment. It features a distinctive, boxy design and aggressive styling intended to appeal to buyers seeking a rugged and assertive look. The Nitro was available from 2007 to 2012. Key trims included the SXT, SLT, and R/T. When new, prices ranged from around $20,000 to $28,000. Its bold styling and available V6 power helped it stand out.
The Good

The 2007 Dodge Nitro offers a muscular design appealing to emotional buyers. Its available V6 engine provides decent performance. The Nitro offers reasonable space and practicality for daily use. While not known for stellar fuel efficiency, used models can be found at attractive price points offering value for budget-conscious shoppers. Comfort is adequate for shorter trips.

The Bad

The interior materials are often criticized for being low-quality. Check for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters. Suspension components can also wear out prematurely.

What Problems Does the 2007 Dodge Nitro Have?

The 2007 Dodge Nitro has several frequently reported problems that potential buyers should be aware of. Common issues include:
  • Electrical problems: Malfunctioning sensors, issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), and problems with the power windows and door locks are frequently reported.
  • Drivetrain issues: Transmission problems and issues with the four-wheel-drive system are not uncommon.
  • Suspension problems: Premature wear of suspension components, leading to poor ride quality and handling.
  • Engine issues: Some owners have reported problems with the engine, including overheating and oil leaks.
  • Interior issues: The interior materials are often criticized for being low-quality and prone to wear and tear.

Recalls: The 2007 Dodge Nitro has been subject to recalls related to issues such as the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause stalling or prevent the vehicle from starting. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for specific recall information. Long-term reliability: The Nitro's long-term reliability is generally considered below average compared to its competitors. Careful maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate some problems, but potential buyers should be prepared for the possibility of more frequent repairs.

How long will the 2007 Dodge Nitro last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Dodge Nitro can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits. Neglecting routine servicing can significantly shorten its lifespan. Common long-term durability concerns revolve around the electrical system, transmission, and suspension. Rust can also be a significant problem, particularly in colder climates. Regular inspections and proactive repairs are essential to maximize the vehicle's lifespan.

I bought my 07 dodge nitro slt with 82k miles on it 9 months ago for 9k plus tax. Currently have 90k miles on it and overall it's been an alright car for me. I've had to do a bit of work on it but im a mechanic so it's not that expensive for me i've had to replace the oil sending unit, bad spark plugs that were causing a misfire when my engine was cold, the muffler and tail pipe rotted out, the trailing arms rotted out, my left signal had a bad ground so watch out for electrical issues they get pretty expensive if you're not a mechanic and live in a inspection state like i do. I'm not counting oil changes/brakes because that's basic maintainence with any vehicle. But outside of that it's been a decent car for the price i love the 4 wheel drive and the higher up in the air factor i never get stuck in the snow and you know how bad it snows in buffalo. Outside of that the engine and transmission are pretty solid on these cars if you don't drive them hard they can be a pretty solid daily driver and the frames are pretty well made mine hardly has even surface rust on it if you don't mind the bad gas milage and bumpy ride it's a nice little suv for the price.
Jud
I like the look and the room it has. But for the last year my lights will go on on off by themselves. Should be a recall for this.
Meganbump
This car is the best i ever had. It has plug one in the back and plenty of room in the back and even the trunk. Very CLEAN and drives great . Smoothe ride.

My nitro with 86k on it had been a pain since day one. If it not for overheating its electrical worst vehicle ever by far.
Tausha
I have had multiple problems with this vehicle. Have replaced the ac compressor 3 times still no ac. Multiple replacements of window assembly units. Otherwise decent car. Just frustrated with all the money and time wasted multiple times for same issue.
Suzie Q
I bought my Nitro brand new in 2007 and I have had problems after problems with it and I will never own another Dodge. First of all the window motor went out more than once in two of the windows and that's $240 a each time. and the window regulator went out in two of the windows and the window tech that fixed that said they just aren't built to last. The air condition hasn't work properly the past couple of years. And now the motor has gone out in my Nitro and it has only 150,000 miles. I have had my vehicle serviced regularly so this vehicle is just not built to last very long. It is a VERY bumpy ride. My husband hated riding or driving this vehicle cause he said its like riding in a go cart! LOL I have been very unhappy that I have had so many issues with this vehicle and I will never own another Dodge.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Dodge Nitro's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features typically included a CD player with AM/FM radio. Higher trims might have offered a premium sound system with a multi-disc CD changer and satellite radio.

Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard features including antilock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control. Optional features included rear parking sensors.

Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for occupant protection.

Crash-test ratings: The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2007 Dodge Nitro mixed ratings. While it performed well in some frontal and side-impact tests, it received lower ratings in rollover resistance. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also provided crash test ratings, which should be consulted for a comprehensive understanding of the vehicle's safety performance. Keep in mind these ratings are relative to vehicles of similar size and weight from that era. The Nitro lacked advanced safety technologies like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning, which are now common in newer vehicles.

2007 Dodge Nitro Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Dodge Nitro had a price range of approximately $20,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Nitro has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, reliability concerns, and fuel economy. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options. Models with the 4.0L V6 engine and fewer reported problems tend to hold their value slightly better.

2007 Dodge Nitro Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Dodge Nitro is generally considered costly to own. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel economy is poor, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant due to the vehicle's age and potential reliability issues. Parts availability is generally good, but labor costs can add up. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs to the electrical system, drivetrain, and suspension. Overall, it's not an economical choice compared to more reliable and fuel-efficient alternatives.

2007 Dodge Nitro Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Dodge Nitro is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Left Hand Drive with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Dodge Nitro Compare to Other Left Hand Drive?

The 2007 Dodge Nitro competed with vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Nitro's available 4.0L V6 offered comparable power to some rivals, but its fuel economy was significantly worse. Feature-wise, the Nitro offered a similar level of equipment, but its interior quality was generally considered inferior. The Nitro's biggest weakness was its reliability, which lagged behind the RAV4, CR-V, and even the Escape. Price-wise, the Nitro was often competitively priced, especially on the used market. However, the lower price is often reflective of its reliability concerns.

Better alternatives: The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V offer superior reliability, better fuel economy, and comparable features. The Ford Escape (especially later model years) also presents a more reliable option with improved fuel efficiency. Similar alternatives: The Jeep Liberty (which shares a platform with the Nitro) offers similar off-road capability and styling, but suffers from many of the same reliability issues. Considering the Nitro's drawbacks, opting for a RAV4, CR-V or even a well-maintained Escape is generally recommended for better long-term ownership experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Dodge Nitro a Good Left Hand Drive?

The 2007 Dodge Nitro is ideal for buyers prioritizing bold styling and a rugged look over fuel efficiency and reliability. It might be worth buying as a used vehicle for those on a tight budget who are comfortable with potential maintenance costs and are willing to perform their own repairs. The R/T trim with the 4.0L V6 offers the best performance. However, potential buyers should have it thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchasing. Alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V are generally better choices for those seeking long-term reliability and lower running costs. Consider other options unless you're specifically drawn to the Nitro's unique aesthetic.

Reliable Nitrosaurus Rex

It's not the prettiest but I love my nitro. Have we'll over 220k on it was the second owner at 75k. Repairs have occurred but nothing crazy normal wear and tear. Great in the snow, love that I can switch between 2 and 4 drive. I even hit a deer and it didn't stop the Nitrosaurus! Overall it not perfect and had to replace a few parts over the years but the cost of the repair is alway $1000 or less and the repairs are always years in between; very reliable.

I LOVE my car!

My Nitro is by far my most favorite car I've ever owned, it's made me a Dodge girl! In the 4-5 years I've had my car, the only major repair I've had was replacing the alternator, which wasn't a very expensive fix. Everything else has been a cosmetic repair. Some of the interior accessories are cheaply made, the handle to the seat adjustment broke way too easily within the first 18 months, for example. My passenger side window motor broke, but my dad helped me fix it and I now know how to take my doors apart. Annoying fixes, but with some elbow grease, you never knew they happened. The body kit is cheap, I do wish it was nicer, but a minor complaint compared to how reliable this car has been. It's moved me across the country twice while towing, it's been great for my dogs, camping and driving on dirt is easy, getting through snow because of 4 wheel drive and 1st and 2nd gear --- this car can do anything! I am pushing 180K miles and it's still going strong, gas mileage is decent (it's not amazing, but not terrible). I plan on driving this car into the ground, I have no reason to get rid of it, it's not too big or too small, and I think it will be great for a family whenever my husband and I start having kids. All my complaints about the car are completely cosmetic and overall don't matter because they are fixable, replaceable, and have nothing to do with the cars functioning and reliability. I would give it 8 1/2 out of 10 stars, overall.

Nightmare!!!

I test drove 2007 nitro and loved it! A few months later, no a/c. Here's a list of what I've been through in two years costing over$3000 !! $2000 in a/c work including fuse box and computer, alternator and battery at the same time, fuel vapor leak detection pump, throttle body, catalytic converter and 02 sensor and just had 3 injectors cleaned! Its still shaking and jumping with lights and bells going off! Way too many sensors, if one goes out, everything goes out!! I want this car out of my life so bad! This is the worst mistake dodge ever made! I call it my dodge nightmare !! AAA knows me quite well. Every morning I think "Whats next nightmare "The worst part is I'm still paying for the piece of junk, I owe over $3000.
