The 2008 Hyundai Entourage is a minivan designed for family hauling. Produced from 2007 to 2009 (as the Entourage), it offered a practical alternative to more established names. Key trims included the GLS, SE, and Limited. New pricing ranged from around $24,000 to $29,000. It stood out for its value proposition, offering a lot of features for the price and a competitive warranty during its time.
The Good

The 2008 Hyundai Entourage offered a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to families prioritizing practicality. Its strong V6 engine provided adequate performance. Its main draw was value; it was a more affordable minivan option. While not known for groundbreaking design, it offered a functional and well-equipped interior for the price. The long warranty (when new) provided peace of mind.

The Bad

The 2008 Hyundai Entourage's weaknesses include lower fuel economy compared to some rivals. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the transmission and electrical systems. The interior materials, while functional, weren't the highest quality. Rust can also be an issue, especially in areas with road salt.

2008 Hyundai Entourage: Quick Overview

  • Engine Options: 3.8L V6

  • Horsepower: 242 hp

  • Fuel Economy: Approximately 16 mpg city / 23 mpg highway

  • 0-60 Times: Around 9 seconds

  • Towing Capacity: 3,500 lbs (when properly equipped)

The turning radius is typical for a minivan of this size. Cargo space is generous, especially with the rear seats folded or removed.

What Problems Does the 2008 Hyundai Entourage Have?

The 2008 Hyundai Entourage has been subject to recalls and has reported issues affecting its long-term reliability. Frequently reported problems include transmission issues such as slipping or harsh shifting. Electrical problems, including issues with the power windows, door locks, and audio system, have also been reported. Some owners have noted issues with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures. Rust is a known concern, particularly in regions with heavy road salt use.

Specific recalls have addressed issues like potential problems with the stop lamp switch, which could affect brake light operation and cruise control function. Another recall involved potential issues with the airbags. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine if all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for corrosion. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial to mitigating some of these issues. Owners should be vigilant about inspecting for rust, especially in areas prone to corrosion.

How long will the 2008 Hyundai Entourage last?

A well-maintained 2008 Hyundai Entourage could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more, though this is highly dependent on maintenance habits. Many are likely to have already surpassed this milestone. Key to longevity is diligent maintenance, especially regarding transmission fluid changes, oil changes, and cooling system flushes. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, transmission wear, and electrical component failures. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan. Expect higher repair costs as components age. Overall durability is average for its class, but proper care is essential.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Hyundai Entourage offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered a DVD entertainment system with a screen for rear passengers. Available driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but included cruise control.

Safety features typically included antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, and front and side airbags. Some models may have included optional features like rear parking sensors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests rated the Entourage acceptably in frontal offset and side impact tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) provided star ratings for frontal and side-impact protection.

Optional features, depending on the trim, included power sliding doors, a power liftgate, and automatic climate control. The integrated tech was fairly basic by today's standards, focusing primarily on entertainment and essential safety features. No advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking were available.

2008 Hyundai Entourage Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Hyundai Entourage ranged from approximately $24,000 to $29,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $7,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Entourage has depreciated significantly due to its age, reliability concerns, and the general depreciation curve of minivans. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has been involved in any accidents. Demand for older minivans is generally lower than for other vehicle types.

2008 Hyundai Entourage Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2008 Hyundai Entourage are typically moderate, comparable to other minivans. Fuel costs are higher due to its lower fuel economy. Maintenance costs can be average but can increase with age due to potential repairs related to the transmission and electrical systems. Repair costs can be higher if major components fail. Long-term ownership can be costly due to potential repairs. It is not the most economical vehicle to own, especially compared to more fuel-efficient and reliable alternatives. Budgeting for potential repairs is crucial.

2008 Hyundai Entourage Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Hyundai Entourage is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Hyundai Entourage Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Hyundai Entourage competed with the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Town & Country, and Dodge Grand Caravan. In terms of performance, it offered a comparable V6 engine. However, its fuel economy lagged behind the Odyssey and Sienna. Feature-wise, it was competitive, particularly in higher trims, but the Odyssey and Sienna generally offered more advanced options.

Reliability is where the Entourage fell short compared to the Honda and Toyota. The Chrysler and Dodge minivans also had their own reliability concerns. Price was the Entourage's main advantage, typically undercutting its rivals. However, the higher long-term repair costs could negate those savings.

Alternatives to consider include the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, particularly if reliability and resale value are top priorities. The Dodge Grand Caravan could be considered if budget is a major constraint, but be aware of its own reliability issues. Overall, while the Entourage offered good value when new, its long-term reliability makes it a less compelling choice compared to more established rivals.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Hyundai Entourage a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 Hyundai Entourage is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a spacious minivan and willing to accept potential reliability risks. It may be worth buying if you find one in excellent condition with a documented service history and at a very low price. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Opting for a lower trim, which may have fewer complex features, could potentially reduce the risk of electrical issues. Given its age and potential for repairs, consider it only if you are prepared to invest in maintenance and repairs. Newer, more reliable minivans are a better choice if budget allows. Avoid if seeking a hassle-free ownership experience.

Most comfortable and reliable vehicle I've owned.

This van met all my family needs. I had a reliable car and we were super comfortable. Shopping was extra fun no need for delivery charges I just put my seats down and it was like having a pick up. Great money maker for the right person.

My mom van.

This is my first minivan but I have to say there are a good deal of pros and cons I can find. There isn?t Bluetooth or any usb/aux ports. Which is a con. The second row isn?t stow and go, the seats do release to come out. Con. There?s a DVD player, pro. Plenty of leg room in the front and back, third row is a little cramped for adults. There?s a tray table that folds up/down between the front seats, has 4 cup holders plus the two cup holders for the front seats that fold out. The engine has great pick up. Plenty of power for me, I?m used to driving a Ford Edge(2015). The only thing that would make this Van better to me would be Bluetooth, and a back up camera. It does have back up sensors but no camera. I like that this car came with rims and not hudcaps. The driver seat has multi position memory. And this one has heated front seats which is nice. I know we bought the car used and it?s an 08? but some of the electronics have decided not to work, we?re going to look into having some of it fixed if it?s not too expansive.

Looks brand new

Looks and performs like a new car. Good pick up speed and smooth ride. Could be better on gas mileage. Plenty of room for hauling people or stuff.

Love it

We purchased our Hyundai Entourage in 2009. It was left over of 2008. We love our minivan. It worth every penny. Fully loaded with leather seats, DVD player, heated front seats, sun roof, moon roof and more. We had no issues with the car until now. We have even used it to haul dry wall and hard wood flooring.

Very comfy!!!!!

Over all this is a great van! I have had it for a little over 2 years. The DVD player is great for the kids and the premium sound is very very good. Also the seats are comfy and supportive heated front seats are so nice to have! But reliability is not the best and the electrical is not good at all.The electric rear doors are good for the kids. Some more pluses are revers sensors and being very stylish van.

Good car for the money

It is a step down from a Honda or a Toyota, but saved thosands. Have 19,000 miles and runs as well as the day I purchased it. The leather seats are a disappointment but something that can be tolerated, but overall the features are practical and easy to reach.

Great value for the bucks!

Bought my Limited as a new 2008 leftover for more than 10k less than the Honda or Toyota. Don't get me wrong, both the Honda and Toyota have GPS, a feature mssing from the Hyundai, but I saved 10k and put a $300 portable GPS in there. I would rather have this minivan and a nice new bathroom in my house than the Honda or Toyota. Also, the DVD player is a must if you have children, and the warranty is awesome! If you bought this vehicle, you made a great choice - but why is it discontinued?

Reluctant Minivan buyer, but now a convert. on September 28, 2008

Great value

Well, we bit the bullet and bought and mini-van (which we said we would never do). My wife loves the features, it feels just a luxurious as my Acura, and we saved a bundle of money from what we would have spent on a Toyota or Honda. Now, our only dislike is the mileage. My wife had a Volvo with a smaller engine that got much better mileage, but for the type of vehicle an average of 19mpg in suburban driving is not too bad. If you are looking at a Volvo wagon or another mini-van, I suggest looking at the Hyundai Entourage.

Excellent value

Based on safety, features and price the Hyundai Entourage is the best value for a minivan. Honda and Toyota are over priced. We had a Honda Odyssey and were happy with the features but not the price we paid. The transmission was replaced by a recall during the warranty period. The second transmission started failing after one year - so much for Honda quality. I know every manufacturer sends out a few lemons but search the discussion lists. Honda transmission failures are a well-kept secret. The Hyundai warranty provides peace of mind beyond the measly three years offered by Honda. The Entourage is one of the safest minivans. That was put to the test when our 2007 Entourage SE was t-boned by a large pickup. Our Entourage absorbed the impact, deployed the side air bags and protected our family. We're now shopping for a 2008 Entourage. It will probably be the Limited trim since they don't sell the SE any longer.
