The 2016 Jaguar XF represents the second generation of Jaguar's mid-size luxury sedan, a segment it entered to compete with the established German marques. The XF boasts a sleek sedan body style and was available in several trims, including the base XF, Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, and S. New pricing ranged from approximately $52,000 to $66,000. It stands out for its combination of British luxury, refined driving dynamics, and distinctive styling that sets it apart from its more conservatively designed competitors.
The Good

The 2016 Jaguar XF offers a compelling blend of performance and luxury. Emotionally, its elegant design and sporty handling appeal to driving enthusiasts. Practically, it provides a comfortable ride, decent fuel efficiency (especially with the diesel engine), and competitive pricing within its segment. While reliability can be a concern, its overall value proposition remains strong.

The Bad

Potential buyers of the 2016 Jaguar XF should be aware of potential electrical issues, particularly with the infotainment system. Reliability has been a recurring concern, and some owners have reported issues with the engine and transmission. Thorough pre-purchase inspections and a comprehensive warranty are highly recommended.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jaguar XF Have?

The 2016 Jaguar XF has faced its share of reported problems, primarily revolving around electrical glitches and infotainment system malfunctions. Owners have frequently reported issues with the InControl Touch system, including freezing, slow response times, and connectivity problems. Engine issues, such as oil leaks and sensor failures, have also been documented, though less frequently. Transmission issues, while less common than electrical problems, have also been reported by some owners.
Recalls for the 2016 XF have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks, problems with the emergency braking system, and airbag malfunctions. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability is a concern, particularly as the car ages. The electrical systems, in particular, appear to be a weak point. Preventative maintenance, adherence to the recommended service schedule, and addressing any issues promptly are crucial for mitigating potential long-term problems. Regular software updates for the infotainment system are also recommended to address known bugs and improve performance. Some reports suggest earlier 2016 models experienced more issues than later production runs, possibly due to early production teething problems.

How long will the 2016 Jaguar XF last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Jaguar XF can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. However, achieving this lifespan depends heavily on consistent maintenance and addressing issues promptly. Owners who neglect maintenance or defer repairs are likely to experience a shorter lifespan.
Long-term durability weaknesses primarily stem from the electrical systems and potential for corrosion, especially in areas with harsh winters. The infotainment system can also become outdated and less responsive over time. Engine and transmission issues, while not universal, can be costly to repair if they arise.

I luv the look and feel but I'm scared it's a lil problematic. The Bluetooth works with my playlist when it wants to. It'll stop syncing to my music but continue to work with my calls. Kinda annoying. Also, the music quality in my Tahoe, Benz, and Camry was waaaaaaay better. Sometimes the engine sounds weird to me but I'm no mechanic. I'm nervous about the longevity of this car but time will tell. I still love it so far and would buy it again. I might just change the whole music system later on.

The XF 35t (6 cyl) is crazy quick, nimble, smooth and quiet. The interior is elegant and extremely comfortable. Luxury AND performance. Not a single problem with the car through 65K miles - reliable. Economic at greater than 25 mpg (premium fuel). My only issue is a rather small trunk. Best car bargain possible if purchased used.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Jaguar XF comes equipped with a range of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The standard InControl Touch infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a basic audio system. Higher trims offer an upgraded InControl Touch Pro system with a larger screen, navigation, and a more powerful Meridian sound system.
Driver-assistance features include standard features like stability control, traction control, and antilock brakes. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. These features enhance safety and driver convenience.

2016 Jaguar XF Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Jaguar XF had a starting MSRP of around $52,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $66,000 when new. As a used vehicle, prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000 depending on the trim, mileage, and condition.
The XF has experienced significant depreciation, typical for luxury sedans. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and location. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance records generally command higher prices. Color and trim level also play a role, with popular colors and well-equipped trims holding their value better. Reliability concerns also contribute to the depreciation rate.

2016 Jaguar XF Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Jaguar XF is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are typically higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, with the diesel offering the best economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, particularly for electrical and engine-related issues. Parts can be expensive, and labor costs at dealerships are generally high. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential repairs and diligent maintenance to mitigate future issues.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Jaguar XF Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Jaguar XF competes in the mid-size luxury sedan segment against rivals like the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus GS. In terms of performance, the XF offers a compelling driving experience, especially with the supercharged V6, but it may not be as sporty as the BMW 5 Series. Features are generally comparable across the segment, although specific infotainment systems vary in user-friendliness. Reliability is where the XF falls short compared to the Lexus GS and, to some extent, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series.
In terms of price, the XF is often competitively priced, particularly on the used market. However, long-term ownership costs can offset any initial savings due to potential repair bills.
Alternatives to the 2016 Jaguar XF include the Lexus GS, which offers superior reliability, or the BMW 5 Series, which provides a more engaging driving experience. The Audi A6 is also a strong contender, offering a blend of luxury, technology, and performance. If reliability is a primary concern, the Lexus GS is a better choice. If driving dynamics are paramount, the BMW 5 Series might be preferable. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class provides excellent comfort and technology, but it tends to be more expensive.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jaguar XF a Good Sedan?

The 2016 Jaguar XF is ideal for buyers who appreciate distinctive styling, a refined driving experience, and British luxury at a competitive price point. However, it's crucial to be aware of potential reliability issues. Buying a used 2016 XF can be a worthwhile option if the price is right and a thorough pre-purchase inspection is conducted.
The R-Sport trim offers a good balance of performance and features. A comprehensive warranty is highly recommended to mitigate potential repair costs. If reliability is a top priority, consider alternatives like the Lexus GS. Ultimately, the decision depends on individual preferences and risk tolerance.

Just bad

Had such high hopes for this car but it did not deliver. I bought though a service that lets me return if I don't like it, it lasted two days before I made that call. To be up front on my size I am a 31 year old male, 6ft tall, 185lbs and no injuries. -The gas and break pedal are insanely close to each other, a few times I went to stop and hit the break and gas at the same time. If you've never done that before let me spoil the ending, the car doesn't stop all that well if it has a powerful engine. -Bluetooth audio cuts out every few minutes for maybe half a second and it's one of the most annoying things. This is a known issue with a lot of android phones and newer iPhones, quick Google search will show many forum posts on this. -Uncomfortable seats. I drove it on the highway for about 30-40 min and my back was killing me. I adjusted the seat before the return trip and same thing. -The engine is great, nice and powerful when you can hit the gas pedal on its own. The issue I have is the transmission, it's an old school sequential automatic and when you are going to a stop you can feel every single downshift until it hits first. Normally you would program the shifts to a lower rpm so it doesn't jerk at every shift down but Jaguar must have forgot physics.

2016 XF R-Sport

Well equipped vehicle for the cost. Comfortable, incredibly quick and agile handling. For a supercharged V6 the fuel economy is an unbelievable 6.9Litres/100Km... or 34 MPG (US) 40 MPG (imperial). Meridian sound system is excellent, the interior is well executed, but not right at the cutting edge, nor is it truly traditional. This is a sports car in performance, with a refined ride.

Good to be owned for a while

Fun to drive car, but a lil bit easy to get bored. Suspension is super soft which makes it drive like a boat, so it's comfortable driving a long distance.

3 years and still love it!

This is the best vehicle I have owned so far. I knew the bad rap the Jaguars and Land Rovers got in the past, but having three new Land Rovers since 2012, thought I would give the Jaguar a try. I have been more than pleased with everything about it. I have the XF S version which is the sports package with the 380 HP Supercharged V6 which is like a rocket. Given the aluminum architecture and handling characteristics of this car, it drive like it's on rails on tight corners and country roads. This car was purchased off the showroom floor and has every option that was available in 2016. The interior is beautiful, multiple drive dynamics available, well finished, and well laid out. The exterior has an excellent fit and finish and I found no flaws in it at all. In three years I have had only scheduled service required, in addition to two O2 sensors that went bad. No big problem, as the car has a 5 year warranty and also 5 years included maintenance. Finally, I used to buy a new car every year or less...saying I have owned this one three years is a really big indicator of how much I love this car.
