The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class marked a shift for the brand, offering a stylish entry-level luxury sedan with a coupe-like roofline. Available as a 4-door sedan, the CLA's model years started in 2014. Key trims include the CLA250 and the higher-performance CLA45 AMG. New, it ranged from around $30,000 to $50,000 depending on trim and options. Its affordability and distinctive design made it popular, attracting younger buyers to the Mercedes-Benz brand.
The Good

The 2014 CLA-Class boasts a stylish, head-turning design that appeals to emotional buyers. Performance is strong, especially in the AMG variant. Practically, it offers decent fuel efficiency for a luxury car and provides a relatively affordable entry point into the Mercedes-Benz brand. However, comfort can be compromised due to the sporty suspension and limited rear headroom.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2014 CLA-Class include a cramped rear seat, particularly headroom. The ride quality can be firm, and some find the base model engine a bit underpowered. Watch out for potential issues with the infotainment system and turbocharger problems, especially in the CLA250. Maintenance costs can also be higher than average.

What Problems Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class include issues with the infotainment system (COMAND), such as freezing or glitches. Some owners have reported problems with the turbocharger, particularly in the CLA250, potentially leading to decreased performance or costly repairs. Oil leaks have also been reported, requiring careful inspection.

Recalls for the 2014 model year have addressed concerns such as fuel leaks due to improperly manufactured fuel pump flanges and issues with the occupant classification system that could lead to the passenger airbag not deploying correctly in a crash. It's crucial to check the VIN for any outstanding recalls.

Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the car's systems and the potential for expensive repairs, especially with the turbocharger and electronic components. Proper and timely maintenance is essential to mitigate these risks. The CLA45 AMG, while offering higher performance, may have increased maintenance costs due to its more demanding engine. Premature wear of brake pads and rotors has also been noted by some owners.

How long will the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. However, longevity depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and proactive addressing of any warning signs are crucial. Weaknesses over time can include deterioration of rubber components (seals, hoses), potential for electronic failures, and increased risk of turbocharger issues, especially if maintenance is neglected. The suspension may also require attention after several years due to wear and tear.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class comes equipped with a 5.8-inch display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, USB port, and the mbrace2 telematics system. Optional entertainment features include a Harman Kardon sound system and a larger display with navigation. Driver-assistance features, available as options, include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, front and rear side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag. A rearview camera was available as part of the Multimedia Package.

The 2014 CLA-Class received generally positive crash-test ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it a "Good" rating in most categories. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. It's important to note that safety ratings can vary depending on specific crash scenarios and testing methodologies. The available driver-assistance features can further enhance safety by helping to prevent accidents or mitigate their severity.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 started around $30,000, while the CLA45 AMG started closer to $48,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $12,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level.

The CLA-Class has experienced significant depreciation, typical for luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and geographic location. Models with desirable options and a clean Carfax report tend to command higher prices. The AMG variant generally holds its value better than the CLA250 due to its higher performance and exclusivity.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and performance capabilities. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the CLA250. However, maintenance and repair costs can be significant, particularly for the CLA45 AMG, due to the specialized parts and labor involved. Long-term ownership costs can be mitigated with proactive maintenance, but unexpected repairs can quickly escalate expenses.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class competes with vehicles like the Audi A3, BMW 2 Series (coupe, not sedan), and Acura ILX. In terms of performance, the CLA45 AMG outpaces most of its rivals, while the base CLA250 is competitive but not class-leading. Features are comparable, although the Mercedes' infotainment system was somewhat dated compared to newer rivals even in 2014.

Reliability is a potential weakness for the CLA-Class compared to the Acura ILX, which generally enjoys a better reputation for dependability. The Audi A3 offers a more refined interior and arguably better handling than the CLA250. The BMW 2 Series (coupe) provides a more engaging driving experience, although it lacks rear-seat practicality.

If reliability is a top priority, the Acura ILX is a solid alternative. For a more balanced blend of performance, refinement, and technology, the Audi A3 is worth considering. For pure driving enjoyment in a smaller package (2 doors), the BMW 2 series would be a better pick.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is ideal for buyers seeking an entry-level luxury car with a stylish design and a prestigious badge. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history and no outstanding recalls. The CLA45 AMG is a thrilling choice for performance enthusiasts, but be prepared for higher running costs. If rear passenger space is a concern, consider alternatives. Thoroughly inspect any used CLA for potential turbocharger issues, oil leaks, and infotainment system glitches before purchasing. Weigh the potential maintenance costs against the appeal of the Mercedes-Benz brand and styling.

Mercedes performance?!

I like everything about the vehicle except two things. 1. From a standing start in Eco mode with start/stop disengaged the vehicle launches due to lag when you step on the accelerator. 2. There is a lag when you use paddle shifters in Manual mode and the vehicle over-revs. In my opinion these two issues are not safe.

Best economy sedan / coupe we have. Up to 36 mpg.

Very peppy, 4 cyl turbo yields power AND economy. The engine off feature at traffic lights is very smart. The brake hold is also excellent.

Driving with clouds

This was an amazing car to drive. It felt very smooth I barely put my foot on the gas and it was going. The steering was very responsive. I would have loved to buy it although the price was way out of my range. The inside was leather and comfortable I could easily fall asleep sitting in the passengers side it was a nice drive.

Worst car I ever owned

I bought a CPO 2014 CLA 250 in August 2017. In the following 8 months it was in for repairs 5 times. The transmission was erratic and it suffered from multiple "check engine" failures. Most unreliable car I ever owned -- and I once owned a 1976 MG Midget.
