2007 Saturn Aura Review: Not the Best 2007 Mid-Size, But Awesome for the Price

Rating: 0.00

The 2007 Saturn Aura marked a significant shift for Saturn, aiming to shed its "plastic car" image. It's a mid-size sedan available from model years 2007 to 2009. Key trims included the XE, XR, and Green Line hybrid. New, it ranged roughly from $20,000 to $26,000. It stood out for its European-inspired styling, improved interior quality compared to previous Saturns, and available V6 power, making it a more appealing and sophisticated option in the competitive sedan market.
The Good

The 2007 Saturn Aura offers a blend of advantages. Practically, it provides decent fuel efficiency (especially the hybrid), comfortable ride, and a spacious interior. Emotionally, its sleek design and available V6 engine offer a more engaging driving experience than some competitors. It represents solid value for money on the used car market.

The Bad

Several weaknesses exist in the 2007 Saturn Aura. Watch out for potential transmission issues, particularly with the 4-speed automatic. Some owners have reported electrical problems and premature wear of certain components. The interior materials, while improved, aren't top-tier in the segment. Rust can also be an issue in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2007 Saturn Aura Have?

The 2007 Saturn Aura has several frequently reported problems. Transmission issues, particularly with the 4-speed automatic transmission found in some models, are common. These can range from hard shifting to complete failure. Electrical problems, including issues with the power windows, door locks, and the car's computer system, are also reported.
Recalls have been issued for certain model years of the Aura, including potential issues with the shift cable, which could allow the car to roll away even when in park. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns include premature wear of suspension components, especially in areas with harsh road conditions. The hybrid model has its own set of potential issues related to the battery pack and hybrid system components. The 2007 model year seems to have more reported issues than later years (2008-2009), suggesting some initial production kinks. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with road salt. Owners have also noted issues with the variable valve timing (VVT) system, particularly on the V6 engines, leading to reduced performance and fuel economy. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial for mitigating these risks.

How long will the 2007 Saturn Aura last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 Saturn Aura could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, average mileage depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglected vehicles may struggle to reach 150,000 miles, while well-maintained examples can exceed 250,000. Long-term durability weaknesses include the aforementioned transmission issues, electrical glitches, and potential for rust. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for extending the car's lifespan. The hybrid model's battery life is a significant factor in its long-term viability; replacement can be costly.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Saturn Aura offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included power windows and locks, air conditioning, and a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims (XR) often included features like an upgraded sound system, available leather seats, and sometimes a sunroof.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control were standard, but features like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring were not available.
Safety features included front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags for head protection. The 2007 Saturn Aura performed reasonably well in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side impact tests. NHTSA awarded it four or five stars in various crash tests depending on the specific test and seating position.
Optional features included OnStar, which provided emergency assistance and remote door unlocking. The Green Line hybrid model featured a hybrid-specific information display showing battery status and fuel economy. Overall, while not cutting-edge by today's standards, the 2007 Saturn Aura offered a respectable level of safety and technology for its era.

2007 Saturn Aura Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Saturn Aura ranged from approximately $20,000 to $26,000 depending on the trim level and options. As a used vehicle, prices now typically range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Aura has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, the Saturn brand's demise, and reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, documented maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has any outstanding recalls. The hybrid model may command a slightly higher price if the battery is in good condition.

2007 Saturn Aura Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Saturn Aura is generally considered relatively economical to own, though potential repairs can skew this. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs depend on the engine, with the hybrid offering the best efficiency. Maintenance is generally affordable, but potential transmission repairs can be costly. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on how well the car was maintained and the engine variant; V6 models may require more expensive maintenance. Addressing issues promptly can prevent more significant, costly repairs down the line.

2007 Saturn Aura Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Saturn Aura is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Saturn Aura Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2007 Saturn Aura competed with mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. In terms of performance, the Aura's V6 options offered comparable power to rivals, though its handling wasn't as sporty as some. Feature-wise, it was generally competitive, although some rivals offered more advanced tech.
Reliability is where the Aura falls short compared to the Camry and Accord, which are known for their long-term dependability. The Fusion and Malibu are perhaps more comparable in this regard. In terms of price, the Aura is now significantly cheaper on the used market than a comparable Camry or Accord, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry (for reliability), Honda Accord (for a balance of reliability and features), and Mazda 6 (for a sportier driving experience). The Chevrolet Malibu, being a GM product, shares some similarities with the Aura but might offer slightly better parts availability and a more established reputation. If reliability is a top priority, the Camry or Accord are better choices, even at a higher price point. However, if budget is the primary concern, the Aura can be a reasonable option, provided it's inspected thoroughly before purchase.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Saturn Aura a Good Sedan?

The 2007 Saturn Aura is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reasonably stylish and comfortable mid-size sedan. It's worth considering *only* as a used vehicle, given its age and the Saturn brand's discontinuation. Thorough inspection before purchase is crucial, paying particular attention to the transmission. The 3.6L V6 XR model offers the best performance, but the 2.4L I4 might be a more reliable and fuel-efficient choice. However, if reliability is a top priority, alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are better options, albeit at a higher cost. Buy only if the car is well-maintained, has no outstanding recalls, and has passed a mechanic's inspection.
