The 2021 Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact crossover SUV known for its stylish design and engaging driving dynamics. Part of the CX lineup, it offers practicality with a sporty feel. Model years ran until 2021 in the US. Key trims include Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. The original pricing ranged approximately from $21,000 to $28,000. It stands out due to its premium interior, sharp handling, and Mazda's signature "zoom-zoom" driving experience, making it popular for those seeking a fun and stylish small SUV.
The Good

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 boasts a responsive engine and agile handling, appealing to drivers seeking fun. Its reliability is generally good, and the interior offers a comfortable and upscale experience. Its efficient fuel economy and relatively affordable price make it a practical and emotionally satisfying choice for buyers seeking a stylish and economical subcompact SUV.

The Bad

The 2021 Mazda CX-3's weaknesses include a small rear seat and limited cargo space, which may not suit families or those needing to haul large items. The infotainment system, while improved, can still feel dated compared to rivals. Listen for any unusual noises from the transmission or suspension during test drives and check for complete service history.

What Problems Does the 2021 Mazda CX-3 Have?

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 generally enjoys good reliability ratings, but some owners have reported minor issues. Common concerns include infotainment system glitches, such as screen freezes or slow response times. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly its cooling performance in hot weather. There have been limited recalls for the CX-3, primarily concerning software glitches and potential fuel pump failures. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the durability of the infotainment system and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and brake service, is essential for maintaining its reliability. Inspecting the vehicle for any signs of rust, especially in areas prone to corrosion, is also recommended, particularly in regions with harsh winters or coastal climates. Early models, while mechanically sound, are more susceptible to issues related to aging components and wear and tear, warranting a thorough inspection before purchase.

How long will the 2021 Mazda CX-3 last?

With regular maintenance, a 2021 Mazda CX-3 can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Proper maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections, is crucial for longevity. Long-term durability may be affected by factors such as driving conditions and climate. Potential weaknesses include wear and tear on suspension components, particularly in areas with rough roads. The infotainment system may also show its age over time, with potential software glitches or hardware failures. Rust can be a concern in colder climates where road salt is used. Regular washing and waxing can help prevent corrosion.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 comes standard with a 7-inch infotainment display featuring Mazda Connect, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available. The standard audio system offers decent sound quality. Higher trims offer features like a Bose premium audio system and navigation.
Driver-assistance features include standard i-Activsense, which includes automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available on higher trims.
Safety features include standard ABS, traction control, stability control, and a full suite of airbags.
The 2021 Mazda CX-3 received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), earning a "Top Safety Pick" award. The NHTSA gave it an overall safety rating of five stars. Optional features include adaptive front-lighting system and rain-sensing wipers on the Grand Touring trim. The infotainment system, while functional, lacks a touchscreen interface and relies on a rotary dial controller, which some users may find less intuitive.

2021 Mazda CX-3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 Mazda CX-3 ranged from approximately $21,000 for the base Sport trim to $28,000 for the Grand Touring trim. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $16,000 to $22,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The CX-3 depreciates at a moderate rate, influenced by factors like mileage, condition, and market demand. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage and desirable features, such as all-wheel drive and the Grand Touring trim, tend to hold their value better. Color and location also play a role in resale value. Strong safety ratings contribute positively to resale value.

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, reflecting its safety ratings and lower repair costs. Fuel economy is excellent, contributing to lower running costs. Maintenance costs are average, with routine servicing being relatively affordable. Repairs are generally infrequent and not overly expensive. Overall, the CX-3 offers a favorable balance between purchase price and long-term ownership expenses, making it a budget-friendly option in its segment. Regular maintenance can further reduce long term costs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2021 Mazda CX-3 Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 competes with the Honda HR-V, Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Kona, and Kia Soul. In terms of performance, the CX-3 offers a more engaging driving experience than the HR-V and Kicks, but the Kona can be comparably sporty. The HR-V provides more cargo space, while the Kicks is more budget-friendly. The Kona and Soul offer more modern tech features. Reliability is generally good across the board, but the Mazda and Honda have a slight edge.
The CX-3's price is competitive, but the Kicks and Soul are typically less expensive. If cargo space is a priority, the HR-V is a better choice. If cutting-edge tech and value are paramount, consider the Hyundai Kona or Kia Soul. For a similar driving experience with slightly more practicality, the Mazda CX-30 is worth considering. If a fun driving experience and stylish design are key, the CX-3 holds its own, but ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Mazda CX-3 a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 is ideal for singles or couples who prioritize style, driving enjoyment, and fuel efficiency over cargo space and rear-seat room. It's worth buying used, especially if found in good condition with low mileage. The Grand Touring trim offers the most features, but the Touring trim provides a good balance of features and value. Given that the CX-3 was discontinued after 2021, buying used is the only option. Ensure a thorough inspection and check for any outstanding recalls or service bulletins before purchasing. Consider it if you appreciate a sporty driving experience in a small package, but be mindful of its limited practicality.

Served us well

I recently traded this car in ONLY because we wanted more interior space. It served its purpose wonderfully for the 3 &1/2 years we owned it. It handled like a dream and was super easy to park and get around town. I cannot stress it enough that the ONLY reason we traded it in was to get more interior space mostly for cargo.
