The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact crossover SUV, introduced as Mazda's entry into the burgeoning small SUV market. Key trims include Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Production started in 2015 as a 2016 model year. Pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $27,000 when new. Its standout features include its sporty handling, stylish design influenced by Mazda's "KODO - Soul of Motion" design language, and a premium interior feel, making it popular among those seeking a fun-to-drive and aesthetically pleasing small SUV.
The Good

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 boasts agile handling and a responsive engine, offering an engaging driving experience (emotional appeal). It's known for above-average reliability and fuel efficiency (practical appeal). The stylish design and relatively upscale interior also provide a sense of value and sophistication (emotional), while its affordability makes it a sensible choice (practical).

What Problems Does the 2016 Mazda CX-3 Have?

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is generally considered a reliable vehicle, but some frequently reported problems and concerns exist. One common issue involves the infotainment system, with some owners reporting glitches, freezing, or slow response times. These issues are typically software-related and may be resolved with updates, but not always permanently. Some owners have also reported minor issues with the automatic transmission, such as occasional harsh shifting, especially in early production models.
Recalls for the 2016 CX-3 have been issued for concerns such as potential fuel leakage due to improper fuel tank welding. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information and ensure any applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the durability of the infotainment system and potential wear and tear on suspension components due to the CX-3's firm ride. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Routine maintenance and timely repairs are essential to mitigate these potential long-term issues. Some owners have mentioned premature brake wear, so it's crucial to inspect brake pads and rotors regularly.

How long will the 2016 Mazda CX-3 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Mazda CX-3 can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Based on average driving habits, this translates to approximately 10 to 13 years of service. Long-term durability strengths include the reliable engine and transmission, provided routine maintenance is performed. Weaknesses over time may include suspension component wear, potential rust in areas with road salt, and the aforementioned infotainment system issues. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor problems promptly are crucial for maximizing the CX-3's lifespan. Keeping up with maintenance will also help mitigate any potential transmission issues.

I bought a used 2016 Mazda Cx-3 Grand Touring with 120k miles on it. My Hyundai Elantra got totaled and I could only afford a new car with higher mileage. I always knew my next car would be a Mazda. I’ve owned it for 4 months which doesn’t seem like but I’m already so much happier with it than my Hyundai. My Hyundai has less miles on it and it needed a new engine a month after owning it and it was so unreliable. Since I’ve owned this Mazda I’ve had zero problems, super reliable so far. It’s very fun to drive, the acceleration is smooth and quick, turning is smooth. Only small complaints like my horn is VERY QUIET, you can’t even hear the horn if my music is on at all, so it’s a little bit of a safety issue when I can’t use my horn. I would like to have more middle console room as wel but the rest of the interior is spacious. The driver seat can’t be a bit difficult to adjust to your liking as well. Even with higher mileage and being a 2016 I already love how reliable it’s been! That’s the main thing I look for in a car. My next new car will definitely be a Mazda!

This review of the 2016 GS model with upgrades comes on the heels of an over 3200km/1988 mile road trip. When you notice the deficiencies you miss in a daily driver. The car's 146hp engine was felt when trying to pass on the highway as it needed 3000RPM to just move while sounding stressed. To aid in The seats are terrible, where you FEEL the lack of fill as the road trip lengthens.Add no lumbar support. Navigation,OMG,the true test is when you need it away from your home region where you're familiar. Apple CarPlay had to do the heavy lifting throughout the trip since Mazda's infotainment was unreliable,it was incapable of finding cities we needed to navigate to while in another city/province.The nav.was UPDATED to the latest version.Cup holders in the middle console cannot support our ~32oz water bottles (Contigo Westloop,Hydro Flask). The in door storage couldn't hold them either. Not having water bottles secured while on a long road trip, dangerous. 2016,how does a N.Am.vehicle not have water bottle holders that fit 32oz? I am not suggesting Mazda,or any manufacturer needs ones that will hold my 64oz Yeti. Wipers, considering they were replaced within a year with a service on a low mileage vehicle, they streaked to the point where visibility was compromised. Where the CX3 shined, gas mileage. It was within +/- one to two liters of the rated 6.7L/100km when faced with head winds,or steep uphill climbs where some freight trucks had to pull over,or severely reduce speed to not over heat their engine.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 comes standard with Mazda Connect, featuring a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment features include a standard six-speaker audio system, with higher trims offering a premium Bose sound system. Driver-assistance features vary by trim; the Touring trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Grand Touring trim includes a head-up display (Active Driving Display) and available adaptive cruise control.
Safety features include standard stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags. Optional features include automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, available on higher trims. The 2016 Mazda CX-3 received good crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" designation when equipped with optional front crash prevention technology. The NHTSA gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. The availability of advanced safety features and strong crash-test performance enhance the appeal of the CX-3 for safety-conscious buyers.

2016 Mazda CX-3 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 had a starting price of around $20,000 for the Sport trim, ranging up to approximately $27,000 for a fully loaded Grand Touring model. Current used market prices generally range from $10,000 to $17,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The CX-3 has experienced moderate depreciation, typical for vehicles in its class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and geographic location. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and a well-documented maintenance record command higher prices. The availability of desirable features like AWD and the Grand Touring trim can also positively impact resale value. Demand for fuel-efficient and reliable small SUVs helps maintain the CX-3's resale value.

2016 Mazda CX-3 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate, falling within the average range for subcompact SUVs. Fuel economy is a strong point, contributing to lower running costs. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. Repair costs are generally reasonable, as Mazda parts are readily available and not overly expensive. Overall, the CX-3 offers a good balance of affordability and reliability, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, premium trim levels with advanced features may have slightly higher repair costs.

2016 Mazda CX-3 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Mazda CX-3 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Mazda CX-3 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 competes with the Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Nissan Juke, and Chevrolet Trax. In terms of performance, the CX-3 stands out with its sporty handling, offering a more engaging driving experience than the HR-V or Trax. The Juke is also sporty, but its styling is more polarizing. The Renegade offers better off-road capability. Feature-wise, the CX-3's infotainment system lags behind some rivals. Reliability is generally good, comparable to the HR-V and better than the Juke. Price-wise, the CX-3 is competitive within its class.
Alternatives to the CX-3 include the Honda HR-V, which offers more cargo space and a more comfortable ride but less engaging handling. The Subaru Crosstrek provides standard AWD and slightly better fuel economy. If cargo space and practicality are priorities, the HR-V is a better choice. For those seeking a more rugged, off-road-oriented vehicle, the Jeep Renegade is an alternative. If sporty handling is paramount, the Mazda CX-3 remains a strong contender. Consider the Hyundai Kona as well, depending on used market prices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Mazda CX-3 a Good Wagon?

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is ideal for singles or couples who prioritize style, sporty handling, and fuel efficiency over maximum cargo space or rear-seat comfort. It's worth buying if you value a fun-to-drive experience and don't need a large vehicle. A used 2016 CX-3 represents good value, particularly the Touring or Grand Touring trims, which offer more desirable features. Ensure any used model has a clean title, a documented service history, and has had any outstanding recalls addressed. If cargo space is a major concern, explore alternatives like the Honda HR-V. Prioritize models with lower mileage and in good condition to minimize potential maintenance costs.

Four Years Strong

Coming from an Audi - I was looking for something that would be just as comfortable and easy to live with, but a little more affordable. The AWD system is really quite impressive for what the vehicle is. I live in the Northeastern USA and we have some pretty darn harsh winters and this car has had zero trouble in in-climate weather and sub zero temps. I am 68,000 miles into ownership and it has been consistently reliable. I will say however that build quality is lacking - my left headlight is full of condensation and has already been replaced once. Additionally, as the vehicle ages, interior panels are vibrating upon acceleration which is simply unpleasant. The center armrest... a truly problematic element of this interior. If you are someone who is looking to purchase a pre-owned CX-3, go for a 2019 or newer and dodge the center console disaster bullet. Regardless, this car easily achieves 30MPG on average, is greatly practical, great in the snow, extremely comfortable and value packed. I would buy another Mazda but I am missing Audi ownership so I will probably replace this with an Audi Q5 here in the coming years.

Worst car I have ever owned

I bought the car brand new and since then have had nothing but trouble. The car has needed new engine replacement and then a new fuel injection put in. Also both rear seat belts have needed to be replaced and now it needs a new i stop battery which Mazda will not replace under warranty. I have only ever taken the car into the Mazda dealer for services and still they will not give me copies of what has had to be replaced and have nothing to say about the continuous issues this car has had. I would not recommend the CX3. I also know of other people who have had similar problems with this model and just had to cut their losses and sell car for a lot less then previously valued and got another car ( not Mazda) but unfortunately I am not in the position to do that. After speaking to head office Mazda I told them all the problems with car and they really don't care and now the car just came out of warranty if these things keep happening it will start costing me a fortune to fix.

Love the car

My only complaint is the tires....have had pressure problems from the start...and $275 cost to replace a single tire seems exorbitant. Other than that...very happy with the car.

Love the styling and performance

This subcompact SUV, is just what I was looking for. I traded in my GMC Terrain for this, and love it,no complaints. The (only)complaint is the arm rest. But,it does what its supposed too. It's fast, and just handles like a sports car. I purchased the Grand Touring AWD and its fully loaded. The best in its class. No negative reviews, I checked.

It feels like a sporty car

I like this car as not only is it fuel efficient, but it rides like a sports vehicle overall especially on the highway. I wish there was more trunk room overall, but I love the interior design and how there is red leather mixed into the dash board overall.
