The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact SUV, introduced to the market to offer a blend of German engineering in a versatile package. This generation was available from 2007-2017. Key trims included the S, SE, and SEL. When new, the pricing ranged from approximately $24,000 to $36,000. It's popular for its sporty handling, premium feel, and available turbocharged engine, setting it apart from some competitors.
The Good

The 2015 Tiguan offers responsive performance thanks to its turbocharged engine, providing a fun driving experience. Comfort is a plus with its well-appointed interior. Its stylish, understated design appeals to those seeking a sophisticated look. While not the most efficient, it offers a balance of power and practicality. The Tiguan presents good value for buyers seeking a premium feel without the high-end price tag.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 Tiguan include higher maintenance costs compared to some competitors. Some owners have reported issues with the timing chain tensioner, which can lead to engine problems if not addressed. Fuel economy isn't class-leading. Also, the rear cargo space is smaller than some rivals in the compact SUV segment.

What Problems Does the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan, and earlier model years of this generation, often revolve around the 2.0-liter TSI engine. A key concern is the timing chain tensioner. A failing tensioner can cause the timing chain to skip, leading to serious engine damage. This is more prevalent in earlier models, but still a risk for the 2015. Regular oil changes and inspections are crucial.
Other reported issues include problems with the water pump and coolant leaks. Some owners have also experienced issues with the turbocharger. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors and issues with the infotainment system, have also been reported, but are less common.
Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including fuel pump failures, potential issues with the airbag system, and brake light switch malfunctions. It is important to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be a concern if preventative maintenance is neglected. Addressing the timing chain tensioner issue proactively can mitigate a major potential problem.

How long will the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan can reasonably be expected to last 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. However, longevity depends heavily on consistent maintenance. The timing chain tensioner and water pump are potential weak points that can affect long-term durability. Regular oil changes, coolant flushes, and inspections are essential. Ignoring these can lead to costly repairs and shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Addressing potential issues early on is key to ensuring a long and reliable service life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with a touchscreen radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Higher trims offer enhanced features.
Tech and Entertainment: SE and SEL trims upgrade to a premium touchscreen infotainment system. A navigation system is available on the SEL trim. A panoramic sunroof is standard on SE and SEL trims.
Driver-Assistance: While not as advanced as modern systems, the 2015 Tiguan offers available features like parking sensors.
Safety Features: Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and a suite of airbags.
Crash-Test Ratings: The 2015 Tiguan received good crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
Optional Features: Depending on the trim level, buyers could opt for features like leather upholstery, a power driver's seat, and upgraded wheels. Note that driver-assistance technology was limited compared to newer vehicles.

2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Prices and Market Value

The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan had a starting MSRP of around $24,000 when new, with higher trims reaching up to $36,000. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices generally range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation is significant, but typical for vehicles in this class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and trim level. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and documented maintenance records command higher prices. The popularity of SUVs also helps maintain some resale value.

2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan are generally average for its class. Fuel costs can be moderate, but not exceptional, due to its fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly for potential issues like the timing chain tensioner. Long-term ownership costs can be substantial if preventative maintenance is neglected or if major repairs are needed. Overall, the Tiguan is not the most economical vehicle to own compared to some of its rivals.

2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the Tiguan's turbocharged engine offers a more engaging driving experience than the base engines in the CR-V and RAV4. However, its fuel economy is generally lower. Feature-wise, the Tiguan offers a premium feel, but rivals may offer more advanced tech. Reliability is where the Tiguan falls short compared to the CR-V and RAV4, which have better track records. The Mazda CX-5 offers similar driving dynamics and styling, with potentially better reliability. The Ford Escape provides a range of engine options and technology, but can also have reliability concerns.
Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for their proven reliability and practicality, the Mazda CX-5 for its sporty handling and stylish design, and possibly a newer Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage for more modern features and warranty coverage. If reliability is a top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 are likely better choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan is ideal for buyers who prioritize a sporty driving experience and a premium feel in a compact SUV. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with documented service history, particularly one where the timing chain tensioner has been addressed. Look for higher trims like the SE or SEL for added features. However, be aware of potential maintenance costs and prioritize reliability if that's a top concern. Consider alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 if reliability is paramount. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended to assess its overall condition.

Mother of a disappointed car owner who work hard.

My Daughter brought one last year and she already needs to replace the ENGINE. She's kept up with all the fluids so either the place where she took it to for oil changes screwed up her truck or the dealership sold her a lemon. The dealership claim it's nothing they can do about it but she can trade it in with more money for a down payment. She tried to contact Volkswagen but No one has bothered to contact her back. Now she's stuck paying for a vehicle that DON'T RUN. WHY take a chance buying another vehicle from a dealership that won't help just to get another LEMON or buy another unreliable volkswagen vehicle. NOT. Angry Bird

Reliable and great MPG

Loved this car for the three years I’ve owned it. Be sure to set aside $1,000 for a maintenance repair around 75,000 miles. Possibly sooner. Carbon build up is extremely common in Tiguans.

Great vehicle when purchased certified used

The Tiguan SEL 4Motion is a great small/mid size SUV but is over priced when new. Purchase certified used and get a premium vehicle for an entry level price.

Love this SUV

It?s got all the value, beauty, dependabllity and power performance one can find in a much bigger SUV. I hate those mom cars but I wanted the comfort and reliability. The Tiguan is the best SUV I have owned.

Suppose to be most reliable car

Manufacturing defect on panaromic sunroof shade. Engine exhaust inlet acceleration link faulty, carbon deposit is higher then the required limit water pump, thermostat, secondary pump, exhaust inlet & outlets made out of high resistance plastic material. Due to this vehicle engine stop. Panaromic sunroof shade comes out the glue applied is not resisting the heat in GCC. This is not covered under warranty. Repair cost is very high.
