Rating: 4.41

Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact SUV that represents the second generation of the vehicle, launched in 2018. Key trims include S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. Its popularity stems from its spacious cabin, especially the available third-row seating (on FWD models), and its European driving feel. The pricing range when new was approximately $24,000 to $39,000, depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2019 Tiguan offers a comfortable ride and a stylish, upscale interior (emotional). It provides ample cargo space, and available third-row seating is a rarity in its class (practical). Performance is adequate for daily driving. It delivers decent fuel efficiency and represents good value for families needing extra space.

The Bad

The 2019 Tiguan's weaknesses include somewhat underwhelming acceleration and engine responsiveness. The third-row seating is cramped and best suited for children. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and electronic components. Check for oil consumption problems and ensure all scheduled maintenance has been performed.

2019 Volkswagen Tiguan: Quick Overview

Fuel economy varies slightly depending on whether the vehicle is equipped with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). While not exceptionally quick, the Tiguan provides adequate acceleration for everyday driving. Towing capacity is limited, suitable only for light loads. What Problems Does the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan include issues with the infotainment system, such as freezing, lagging, and connectivity problems. Some owners have also reported issues with the electronic parking brake and occasional electrical glitches.

Recalls for the 2019 Tiguan have included issues related to the rearview camera display and potential fuel leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns revolve around potential oil consumption issues with the 2.0T engine. Regular oil level checks and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule are crucial. Some owners have also reported premature wear of brake components. The transmission, while generally reliable, can exhibit occasional jerky shifts. Over time, the plastics used in the interior may show signs of wear and tear. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may require replacement as the vehicle ages. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant and costly repairs. Staying on top of factory-recommended maintenance will improve long-term reliability.

How long will the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan last?

With proper maintenance, a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Long-term durability depends heavily on consistent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely replacement of wear items. Weaknesses over time tend to involve the aforementioned oil consumption, potential for electronic glitches, and wear on suspension components. Neglecting maintenance significantly shortens its lifespan.

I chose this Tiguan as it is large enough for me to carry my skis inside. It is extremely good on gas. It is very quiet on the road handles very well is very comfortable and is loaded with many safety and convenience features that I did not know I would even appreciate. It is very comfortable and enjoyable to drive.

Bought for my son. Price, comfort, reliability and safety were tops for me and this vehicle met each one. He loves that it looks a little sporty and not like a “Mom Car”!

This 2019 Tiguan SE has so much room, ( both leg room and cargo space), seems very nicely appointed, very comfortable seating. and is a pleasure to drive.

Ever since I could drive I wanted a Tiguan. Then finally, was able to purchase one. But from the very beginning- it showed problems. Only 3 years old and it already has problems with the engine. VW has not been helpful whatsoever. I use to be a fan of VW cars- not anymore. I've been reading a lot about the Tiguan and it seems to be me that it was cheaply made and it shows.

2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan ranged from approximately $24,000 to $39,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $16,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The Tiguan depreciates at an average rate for its class. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options (like AWD and higher trim levels). Well-maintained examples with complete service records command higher prices.

Insurance costs for the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan are generally average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, with fuel economy figures in the mid-20s combined. Maintenance costs can be slightly higher than average due to the potential for more complex repairs and the need for specialized parts. Overall, the Tiguan is moderately expensive to own compared to some competitors, primarily due to potentially higher repair costs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of performance, the Tiguan's acceleration is less spirited compared to the Mazda CX-5's available turbo engine or the Honda CR-V's quicker response. Feature-wise, it holds its own, especially with the available third-row seating (FWD models only), which is a rarity. Reliability is a potential weak point compared to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, known for their strong track records. Price-wise, the Tiguan is generally competitive.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Honda CR-V: More reliable, better fuel economy, stronger resale value.
  • Toyota RAV4: Excellent reliability, good fuel economy, available hybrid model.
  • Mazda CX-5: More engaging driving experience, upscale interior.
  • Nissan Rogue: Comfortable ride, user-friendly tech.

If reliability is a top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 are better choices. If driving enjoyment is key, the CX-5 is a strong contender. If a third row is essential, the Tiguan is one of the few options in this class, but consider its limited space.

Ranks #1320 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan a Good Wagon?

The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan is ideal for small families needing a compact SUV with available third-row seating (FWD models). It's worth buying if you prioritize interior space and a European driving feel. However, be mindful of potential reliability concerns and ensure a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

Buying a used 2019 Tiguan can be a good value, especially if you can find one with a comprehensive service history and no major issues. The SE or SEL trims offer a good balance of features and value. If you're concerned about reliability, consider extended warranty options. If you don't need the third row, other SUVs in the class might offer better reliability or a more engaging driving experience.

I bought my 2019 Tiguan brand new.

I bought my 2019 Tiguan brand new. Fast forward to April 2024 with 55,000 miles on it and I had to have the engine replaced under warranty. Three weeks after getting the new engine,May 2024, the car goes into "Emergency Transmission mode". Another trip to the dealership and a transmission valve was replaced. Picked up the vehicle on a Wednesday and Thursday the vehicle again goes into " Emergency Transmission mode ", another trip to the dealership and the Transmission Control Module was replaced. Picked up the vehicle on Saturday and on the next Tuesday, you guessed it, back to the dealership with the " Emergency Transmission mode " in full effect. Since the first week of May 2024, now 13 June 2024, I have had my car in my possession for a total of 3 days. VW Customer Care is no help and simply!y apologizes for the car breaking down and the delay in getting it repaired. Once it is "repaired", I plan on trading this car immediately. I will never own another VW.

Superb car.

We bought a 2019 Tiguan and we are very impressed. We've had many Toyotas and this is our first VW. Driveability is awesome, comfort is excellent. We will wait to see if it's as long lasting as a Toyota.

awesome car

I love this car. there are so many perks, but also a couple cons. 1. I love the interior, the buttons are very easy to understand. 2. I LOVE THE ALERT IT GIVES WHEN YOU'RE TOO CLOSE TO A CAR, literally saved me from so many accidents. 3. it has a third row, which I didn't even find out about until a year after having my car, which was sick. although I love this car, but its not great in the winter. I probably got stuck about 40 times last year (not exaggerating). but I got new tires and were gonna see how it treats me. one of the only things I don't like about the interior is the center console. its really deep and I tend to lose things in there and it gets messy quickly. Overall I want to say that I definitely have emotional attachment to my blue volskwagon Tiguan, and don't know when ill ever let it go. I hope this review helps somebody.

2019 VW

Bought this new in September 2019. LES model. Has about 20,000 miles on it. Because we drive mostly city miles I’ve changed oil at 6.000 mile intervals. Engine uses no oil. Only problem I’ve had was the front rotors warped at 10.000 miles. They are made from inferior steel and rust easily when you wash the car. Replaced them with aftermarket parts. I like the way the car handles. I’ve driven for many years and many cars. I can honestly say I enjoy driving this car.

Great for tall people.

This is my second Tiguan. Being 6‘5“ tall this is one of the most comfortable cars in this range. I like the touchscreen controls and the handling is very nice and firm. The panoramic sunroof is also a big plus. It is not the fastest car out there for sure. Cargo room is great and you can seat four people very easily in it. Legroom is even good behind me for a Passenger .

reliable vehicle...

I had some issues with the car, but they had been taking care of. The Vehicle is very comfortable and for a 4 Cylinder engine has a lot of power for a mid size SUV.

Brake issues

I have VW Tiguan 2019 with 4603 Mils (only). I have a issues with my brakes. Whenever I applied brakes then I have wobbling/Shaking. As per Dealer this issue is not covered by the Warranty. This is very surprising to me how this low mileage vehicle is not covered by this issue This issue is related to warrant item. As per my experience never buy this VW again in my life and will not recommend to any one of them
