The Volkswagen Tiguan, introduced in 2007, is a compact crossover SUV known for its German engineering and practicality. The 2023 model continues this tradition, offering a comfortable ride and ample cargo space. Available as a four-door SUV, key trims include S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. The pricing range typically falls between $27,000 and $38,000, depending on trim and options. Its appeal lies in its European driving dynamics, standard safety features, and available third-row seating, a rarity in its class.
The Good

The 2023 Tiguan offers a comfortable ride and a spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers. Its refined design and available R-Line trim provide an emotional connection. Performance is adequate for daily driving, while decent fuel efficiency adds to its value. Overall, it provides a balance of practicality, comfort, and style at a competitive price point.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2023 Tiguan include its somewhat uninspired engine performance compared to rivals, especially when fully loaded. Some reviewers have noted the infotainment system can be laggy at times. Keep an eye on potential electrical issues, as these have been reported in previous model years. The fuel economy, while decent, isn't class-leading. Ensure proper maintenance for the turbocharger.

What Problems Does the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan Have?

While the 2023 Tiguan is generally reliable, some frequently reported problems, primarily seen in previous model years, may still surface. These can include minor electrical issues, such as glitches with the infotainment system or sensor malfunctions. Some owners have reported problems with the turbocharger system, although this is not widespread.
It is important to check for any outstanding recalls. Recalls can address safety-related defects, and information can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages, especially with the turbocharged engine. Adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule is crucial for mitigating potential issues. Specific issues to look for include oil leaks around the turbocharger and potential wear on suspension components. As with any vehicle, regular servicing and prompt attention to warning lights can help ensure long-term reliability. Check online forums and owner reviews for more detailed information on potential problems.

How long will the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan last?

With proper maintenance, the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Long-term durability largely depends on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, including timely oil changes and servicing of the turbocharger. Potential weaknesses over time may include wear on suspension components, increased risk of electrical issues, and potential problems with the transmission. Regular inspections and proactive maintenance can help extend the lifespan and minimize unexpected repairs. Keeping up with software updates for the infotainment system is also important for optimal performance.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims offer a larger touchscreen, a premium audio system, and a digital cockpit (digital instrument cluster).
Standard driver-assistance features include Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Traffic Alert. Optional features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Park Distance Control, and Automatic High Beams.
Safety features include a suite of airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be checked for the latest results. These ratings provide insights into the vehicle's performance in various crash scenarios. Many reviews cite good crash test scores from both agencies for the 2023 model and previous, similar model years. The availability of these features makes the Tiguan a safe and technologically advanced choice.

I absolutely love this car and all it’s features even though it doesn’t open and close trunk via keyphobe. Kids love the car especially the panoramic sunroof.

Had suv parked out in country, that something ate wires, had it repaired, but son-in-law saw subframe to be cracked where mount bushing is installed, asked if that normal service advisor , answered no, so had that replaced, was cover under warranty. But this could be a potential recall .

Cheated out of Blind spot monitoring

The car was sopposed to have blindspot monitoring, lane assist change assist and other some other tech. Volkswagen instead cheated its customers by not including that and blaming it on the chip shortage. Verify window sticker. Other than that the car rides smooth. I am at 5,000miles without issues with powertrain or cabin.

Nice vehicle, but!

Nice riding vehicle EXCEPT it has a hesitation issue when you step on the gas from a standstill. Happens most when the "stop/start" is active, less when you turn it off but it still hesitates. Dealer has no answer other than it is normal and we can't find anything. Others have voiced same concern, recall?

Great vehicle for every day use.

I really liked this car, the car is easy to control, accelerates quickly when compared with others. Comfortable and plenty of space inside. I moved from a KIA sedan, and I can say that you get used to the dimensions of the car very easily and quickly. And compared to the KIA, the build quality of the car is felt, and that it is made of metal.

VW loyalist let down.

We purchased the Tiguan new when our car died on vacation. After a short test drive the vehicle had all the technology and safety features we wanted, decent ride and acceleration. The first full day of driving was a six hour trip across Tennessee, I could not find a comfortable seat position, my legs started getting numb and later after stopping had leg cramps. The next two days we traveled to Colorado, it was the worst trip ever. My wife is under five feet tall , there was no way she could safely operate that automobile. Access for anyone under five feet is difficult. I can not understand how crossovers are supposed to be good for seniors. The Tiguan may be a good grocery mobile but it is the worst vehicle I have driven on an extended trip. We have driven everything from classic cars, coupes to sedans to SUVs or Pickup trucks on this route without complaint. We traded back into a sedan (Volvo S90) knowing we were taking a huge hit on the deal. We have owned multiple VWs , the Tiguan has left us disappointed.

Not Really Second Best

We wanted a Audi Q3 but all the dealers in the state had only loaded models. Being in our 70's, we weren't interested in technology, appearance, performance, or off-road add-on packages. The Tiguan SEL-R has all the features we want that a Q3 Premium Plus has. Sure, the Tiguan won't match the Q3's performance or looks. but it is close enough. And it has more interior room than a Q5.

Great price, luxury features

Traded in a Volvo for my Tiguan because of the SEL R features matched the features I loved on my Volvo. It’s very comfortable, has great pick up and love my large moon roof! Love that it is an air cooled engine and gets great gas mileage. Overall, great car!

Love the fender sound system in the SEL!

You need to get the SEL for the Fender sound system if you like your ears at all! All the other SEL goodies are awesome. Mine came without the capacitive touch control steering wheel removed and that is okay with me did not that anyway
