Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris, also known as the Vito in some markets, entered the North American market aiming to offer a more compact and efficient alternative to full-size vans. As a mid-size van, it's available in cargo and passenger configurations. Key trims include Cargo Van and Passenger Van. Its popularity stems from its maneuverability, fuel efficiency compared to larger vans, and Mercedes-Benz pedigree. The 2016 model year had an original MSRP ranging roughly from $29,000 to $33,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2016 Metris offers a blend of practicality and prestige. Its smaller size makes it more maneuverable in urban environments.
It delivers decent performance from its engine. Fuel efficiency is a strong point compared to full-size vans. The Mercedes-Benz badge provides a certain level of appeal, while the van's utility caters to business owners and those needing flexible cargo/passenger space.

The Bad

Some reported weaknesses of the 2016 Metris include potential reliability issues with certain components, particularly the electrical system and transmission. The interior, while functional, may lack the premium feel expected from the Mercedes-Benz brand.
Owners should also watch for potential issues with the sliding door mechanisms and ensure regular maintenance to mitigate problems.

What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris often revolve around electrical system glitches, including issues with sensors, infotainment systems, and the vehicle's computer. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or hesitation, have also been reported. Some owners have experienced issues with the sliding door mechanisms, including difficulty opening or closing.

Recalls for the 2016 Metris have addressed issues like potential fuel leaks due to faulty fuel rails and possible problems with the steering system. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to confirm whether all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly with the electrical and transmission systems. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is vital to mitigate potential problems. Early model years of the Metris, including 2016, might be more prone to certain issues compared to later models as Mercedes-Benz addressed some of the initial concerns. Thorough pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended.

How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris last?

With good maintenance, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Given diligent care and timely repairs, 10-15 years of service is achievable. However, the long-term durability of the Metris can be affected by factors like driving conditions, usage (commercial vs. personal), and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule.

Weaknesses over time often manifest as electrical issues, transmission wear, and potential corrosion in areas exposed to harsh weather. Consistent fluid changes, regular inspections, and addressing minor issues promptly can extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris comes with a basic level of technology for its class. The standard infotainment system typically includes a 5.8-inch display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Optional features include a navigation system, upgraded audio system, and smartphone integration.

Driver-assistance features, depending on the trim and optional packages, can include a rearview camera, parking sensors, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and collision prevention assist. These features enhance safety and driver convenience.

Standard safety features include driver and passenger airbags, side airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability program (ESP), and traction control.

Crash-test ratings from organizations like the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may vary. Check the official websites for specific ratings for the 2016 Metris, as ratings can differ based on the specific configuration and testing methodology. While the Metris offers a solid set of safety features, it's essential to review the latest crash-test data for a comprehensive assessment.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris had an MSRP ranging from approximately $29,000 to $33,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000, contingent on mileage, condition, and equipment.

Depreciation is influenced by factors such as mileage, vehicle condition, accident history, and overall market demand. Well-maintained Metris vans with lower mileage and desirable options tend to retain their value better. Commercial use can impact resale value, as these vehicles often accumulate higher mileage and may experience more wear and tear.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris can be moderately costly to own. Insurance costs may be higher due to the Mercedes-Benz badge and potential repair expenses. Fuel costs are reasonable for its class, but maintenance and repair costs can be higher compared to non-luxury vans.

Long-term ownership costs are influenced by potential repairs, particularly related to the electrical and transmission systems. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigating these costs, but unexpected repairs can contribute to a higher overall cost of ownership.

2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris Compare to Other Van?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris competes with vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Ram ProMaster City, and Nissan NV200. In terms of performance, the Metris offers a decent balance of power and fuel efficiency compared to some rivals. The Transit Connect and ProMaster City are similar in size and offer comparable fuel economy, while the NV200 is typically less expensive but also less powerful.

In terms of features, the Metris offers available driver-assistance technologies that are comparable to some rivals, but the base models can feel spartan. Reliability can be a concern for the Metris, with some owners reporting electrical and transmission issues, which may give the Ford Transit Connect an edge in some cases.

In terms of price, the Metris tends to be more expensive than the Nissan NV200 and often rivals the Ford Transit Connect in price.

Alternatives to consider include the Ford Transit Connect, offering similar versatility and potentially better reliability for some buyers. The Ram ProMaster City is another option in this class, although the Ford tends to be a stronger competitor overall. Buyers prioritizing affordability might lean towards the Nissan NV200, acknowledging its limitations in power and features. The Metris offers the cachet of the Mercedes-Benz brand and a slightly more refined driving experience but it comes at a potentially higher cost of ownership.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris a Good Van?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz Metris is ideal for businesses or individuals needing a versatile, mid-size van that's easier to maneuver than full-size options and offers reasonable fuel economy. It's worth buying if you prioritize the Mercedes-Benz brand and are willing to pay a premium for it, but be aware of potential reliability concerns and higher maintenance costs.

Buying a used 2016 Metris can be worthwhile if you find one in good condition with a comprehensive service history and have it thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic. Lower mileage examples are preferable. The Passenger Van trim is suitable for transporting people, while the Cargo Van is better for hauling goods. Consider later model years if reliability is a major concern.

Mercedes Metris Passenger Van is a Hit

Lots of room - great acceleration - feels solid. It does not have the latest generation Mercedes electronics but does have the latest safety features. If you need room for 7 or 8 adults - and the truck to boot - nothing out there comes close. Even more room than a Suburban.

Utilitarian awesomeness unlike anything else

I purchased a fully loaded passenger version as a work vehicle for my real estate business. It is nimble and fuel efficient enough that staff (or I) don't mind driving it around for errands that don't require a van. Its boxy proportions make it a perfect canvas for custom wraps, and mine looks amazing! I load it up with passengers at least once per week for work. With seats removed, it offers a whole other level of cargo space than any minivan. And since my loaded passenger van is fully carpeted, it is still quiet and nice looking, even when turned into a cargo hauler. Other upsides: 2nd and 3rd row seats hold actual adults. The 3rd row is vastly better than any 3rd row in a minivan or SUV. Seating position is identical in 2nd and 3rd row. Nothing inside is luxurious, but it's all functional, durable, and attractive. My van has the optional high output alternator and additional battery, and I had mine up-fitted with a 3,000 watt pure sine wave power inverter, so I can power professional audio gear that I use at community events. Steering and handling is exceptional. Braking is a bit spongy, but actual performance is solid. That actually makes this function better for smooth shuttle duty. I use it for occasional trailer towing, and it performs spectacularly (with the exception of side mirrors that are too small). Downsides: the 2nd and 3rd row seats don't fold or adjust. No Stow-N-Go here. But remember that collapsing seats still require space in the floor, as compared to the Metris with seats removed for hauling. I just compared my Metris with seats removed side-by-side with a current generation Dodge Caravan with seats folded flat. The low and completely flat load floor and vastly greater interior volume favor the Metris by a wide margin. Mirrors are small. Infotainment system is pure utility vehicle: functional, but nothing to look at, not easy to use, and an okay audio system, but not in the league of a premium audio system on a minivan or SUV. Given that I paid $45,000 for a fully optioned model, I would have gladly paid another $1k or $2k more for better infotainment, navigation, audio, and a few more luxurious soft-touch surfaces. The bottom line is that nothing else offers the combination of driving and handling this well, being this nimble, fitting into garages, solid towing capabilities, offering adult friendly accommodations in all seats, and looking this good on the outside. It's not perfect, but my son has made fun of me for the number of times I've said, "I LOVE this van!"
