2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.03
Based on 12 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris is a mid-size van, offering a blend of Mercedes-Benz refinement and commercial utility. Available as a cargo van or passenger van, it slots below the Sprinter in size. Key trims include Cargo, Passenger, Worker Cargo and Worker Passenger. The Metris was produced from 2016 onwards. Pricing ranged from around $30,000 to $40,000 when new. Its standout features include a smaller footprint than full-size vans, making it more maneuverable, and its Mercedes-Benz pedigree provides a more upscale feel compared to some rivals.
The Good

The 2017 Metris offers a compelling blend of practicality and prestige. For practical buyers, it boasts good cargo capacity, maneuverability, and fuel efficiency for its class. Emotionally, the Mercedes-Benz badge offers a sense of quality and sophistication. Its comfortable ride and available features enhance the driving experience, making it a more appealing option than purely utilitarian vans. It offers a good value proposition for businesses seeking a refined and capable work vehicle.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2017 Metris include its relatively firm ride, which can be less comfortable on rough roads. Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system and some components like sliding door mechanism. The base engine, while adequate, can feel strained when fully loaded. The interior, while functional, isn't as luxurious as some other Mercedes-Benz models. Pre-purchase inspections are recommended to check for any existing problems.

What Problems Does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris include issues with the sliding door mechanism, which can become noisy or difficult to operate. Some owners have also reported problems with the electrical system, including issues with the infotainment system and various sensors. The turbocharger has also been known to cause problems in some cases. While not widespread, there have been reports of issues with the fuel system.

Recalls for the 2017 Metris have addressed concerns such as potential issues with the fuel filter flange, which could lead to fuel leakage, and problems with the power steering system. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability can be a concern, as some owners have reported premature wear of certain components. Regular maintenance and adherence to the recommended service schedule are crucial for mitigating potential issues. Checking the vehicle's service history is advisable when considering a used 2017 Metris. Specific issues by model year beyond 2017 might be present in later models, but the 2017 often serves as a benchmark for early model reliability.

How long will the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially lasting 10-15 years with average use. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, timely servicing of the transmission, and addressing issues promptly are crucial. Weaknesses may emerge over time, including potential rust issues (especially in colder climates), wear on suspension components, and potential electronic gremlins. The sliding door mechanism and turbocharger remain potential long-term concerns. Consistent care is key to maximizing the Metris's lifespan.

I love the Metris Cargo Van. Great on gas and tons of room in cargo area. You only need a 5' 8" clearance so you can park in a garage or parking garage like in high rise buildings. It's a smooth ride, functional and looks cool.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris features a functional but not overly advanced tech suite. Standard tech includes a basic audio system with a small display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment is limited in base models, with upgrades including a larger display screen, navigation, and premium audio systems available as options.

Driver-assistance features were available as optional extras, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and parking sensors. These features enhance safety and convenience, but were not standard across all trims. Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific safety performance data. The Metris may have undergone testing, and results should be reviewed to assess its crashworthiness. The availability of driver-assistance features played a significant role in its safety rating, as these features can help prevent accidents. Overall, the tech and safety features in the 2017 Metris are adequate but not cutting-edge compared to newer vehicles.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices vary widely, generally falling between $15,000 and $30,000 depending on mileage, condition, and equipment. The Metris has experienced moderate depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, overall condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options like navigation and driver-assistance features. Cargo vans generally hold their value better than passenger vans due to higher demand in the commercial market. Properly maintained vehicles with clean titles command higher prices.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2017 Metris are generally moderate, similar to other vans in its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, with EPA-estimated fuel economy of around 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. Maintenance can be more expensive than non-luxury brands due to Mercedes-Benz parts and labor rates. Repair costs can also be higher. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high depending on maintenance habits and the frequency of repairs. While fuel-efficient, higher maintenance expenses make it moderately costly to own.

2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris Compare to Other Van?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris competes with vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Ram ProMaster City, and Nissan NV200. In terms of performance, the Metris offers a more refined driving experience than the Ram and Nissan but is less powerful than some larger vans. Its features are comparable, but the Mercedes-Benz badge adds a premium feel. Reliability is a mixed bag, with some owners reporting issues. Price-wise, the Metris is generally more expensive than its American and Japanese rivals.

The Ford Transit Connect offers similar functionality at a lower price point, with comparable fuel economy. The Ram ProMaster City is more utilitarian, prioritizing cargo space and affordability. The Nissan NV200 is the most budget-friendly option but lacks the refinement and features of the Metris.

Alternatives depend on priorities. If budget is a primary concern, the Transit Connect or NV200 are better choices. If a more refined driving experience and the prestige of the Mercedes-Benz brand are desired, the Metris is a viable option. However, potential buyers should carefully consider reliability reports and factor in higher maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris a Good Van?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz Metris is ideal for small businesses or individuals needing a versatile and maneuverable van with a touch of luxury. It's worth buying if you value its smaller size, Mercedes-Benz pedigree, and available features, and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. Buying used can offer significant savings, but a thorough inspection is crucial. Opting for a well-maintained model with documented service history is recommended. Specific trims like the Passenger Van with added safety features are desirable for family use, while the Cargo Van suits commercial needs best. Consider alternatives if budget or long-term reliability are top priorities.

It’s a very nice cargo van with passenger seats.

Van has the sliding side doors for easy access for 91 year old mother and all our grandkids. Also it has the towing capacity for our boat.

Best mainstream mini van alternative

Lots of space regardless of where you sit, overall extremely satisfied except for the manual tailgate.

I Love This Van

I love the Metris Cargo Van. Great on gas and tons of room in cargo area. You only need a 5' 8" clearance so you can park in a garage or parking garage like in high rise buildings. It's a smooth ride, functional and looks cool.

Please don't buy. After 3 years i hate it.

Worst car in my life. Worse than pinto. It makes so much noise. Seats doesn't fold. 43000 van doesn't have passenger window? Navigation screen so small. It's joke. Are you serious MB you made this?

It’s a very nice cargo van with passenger seats.

Van has the sliding side doors for easy access for 91 year old mother and all our grandkids. Also it has the towing capacity for our boat.
