The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris is a mid-size van designed for both commercial and personal use. Introduced as a smaller, more fuel-efficient alternative to full-size vans, the Metris offers a versatile platform. Available as a cargo van or passenger van, its key trims include Cargo, Worker, and Passenger. Pricing in 2019 ranged from approximately $30,000 to $36,000. It stands out due to its Mercedes-Benz pedigree, offering a blend of European refinement and practicality in a segment often dominated by more utilitarian vehicles.
The Good

The 2019 Metris offers a blend of practicality and prestige. Performance is adequate, with a responsive engine. It provides a comfortable ride compared to some competitors. Its smaller size makes it easier to maneuver in urban environments. The Mercedes-Benz badge appeals emotionally, while its cargo capacity and relatively fuel-efficient engine appeal practically.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2019 Metris include reports of electrical issues and some concerns about long-term reliability, particularly with the transmission. The interior can feel somewhat basic, especially in lower trims. Repair costs can be higher than average due to it being a Mercedes-Benz product. Some owners have noted that the infotainment system feels dated.

What Problems Does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris often revolve around electrical systems, including issues with sensors and the infotainment system. Some owners have reported problems with the transmission, such as rough shifting or delayed engagement, although these issues are not widespread. There have been some recalls related to fuel delivery and emissions systems that owners should be aware of and check if their vehicle was affected.

Long-term reliability is a concern for some owners, particularly as the mileage accumulates. Issues related to the turbocharger and other engine components have been reported, but again, these are not universally experienced. Preventive maintenance, such as regular oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial for mitigating potential problems. It's recommended to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any specific recalls or technical service bulletins related to the 2019 Metris. Potential buyers should obtain a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Mercedes-Benz vehicles to identify any existing or potential issues.

How long will the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris last?

With good maintenance, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris could reasonably be expected to reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially lasting 10-12 years. However, diligent maintenance is key. Long-term durability can be affected by the quality of maintenance. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Weaknesses over time often manifest as electrical issues, potential turbocharger problems, and wear and tear on suspension components. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its lifespan.

Robert
The 4 cyl. turbocharged engine is very responsive and has a lot of power. Comfort is slightly below average and the ride is harsh on roads with bumps or ridges, also noisy on coarse pavement ( maybe due to tires). The info - entertainment system is very difficult to navigate. Also, a cd player is not available after market and sirius radio is not available. Had to buy a console to fit between the front seats, unless you buy a special package. Finally found one that works at Tractor Supply. Fuel cap located in terrible location (must open driver door to access fuel filler cap and door must remain open while being fueled).

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris features a somewhat basic, but functional tech setup. The standard infotainment system includes a small display screen, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Upgraded systems offer navigation and a slightly larger screen. Driver-assistance features, some of which are optional, include:
  • Crosswind Assist (standard)
  • Attention Assist (standard)
  • Optional: Blind-spot monitoring
  • Optional: Lane Keeping Assist
  • Optional: Collision Prevention Assist
  • Optional: Parktronic parking sensors
Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. A rearview camera is often available as an option.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) may be limited for this vehicle class. Check the IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific ratings. The focus is more on functionality and practicality than cutting-edge technology. While adequate, the tech is not a highlight compared to some competitors. Optional features enhance the safety and convenience, but come at an additional cost. The standard Crosswind Assist is a notable feature for a vehicle of this type, improving stability in windy conditions.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris ranged from approximately $30,000 to $36,000, depending on trim and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $18,000 to $28,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation is moderate for this type of vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, maintenance history, and whether it's a cargo or passenger version. Passenger vans tend to hold their value slightly better. The Mercedes-Benz brand can help maintain resale value compared to some competitors.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2019 Metris are typically moderate, similar to other vans in its class. Fuel costs are reasonable thanks to its four-cylinder engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to it being a Mercedes-Benz product. Parts and labor tend to be more expensive. Long-term ownership costs are therefore moderately high, leaning towards costly, depending on maintenance habits and potential repairs. 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Cargo with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris Compare to Other Cargo?

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris competes with vans like the Ford Transit Connect, Ram ProMaster City, and Nissan NV200. In terms of performance, the Metris offers a slightly more refined driving experience than some rivals, with adequate power for most needs. Feature-wise, it's generally comparable, although some competitors offer more advanced tech options. Reliability is a point of contention; some rivals have a better reputation for long-term dependability.

Price-wise, the Metris tends to be slightly more expensive than the Ford and Ram options, but offers the perceived prestige of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The Nissan NV200 is typically the most affordable, but lacks the power and refinement of the others.

Alternatives:
  • Ford Transit Connect: A strong contender, offering good fuel economy and a variety of configurations.
  • Ram ProMaster City: A value-oriented option with a spacious interior.

Whether the Metris is a better choice depends on individual needs and priorities. If a more premium driving experience and the Mercedes-Benz brand are important, the Metris is a viable option. However, if budget and long-term reliability are primary concerns, the Ford or Ram alternatives might be more suitable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris a Good Cargo?

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz Metris is ideal for businesses or individuals who need a mid-size van with a touch of European refinement and don't require the bulk of a full-size van. It's worth buying if you prioritize the Mercedes-Benz brand, a more comfortable ride, and don't mind potentially higher maintenance costs. A used model can offer good value, but a thorough inspection is crucial. Consider the Passenger van if you need seating for more people, or the Cargo van for commercial use. Weigh the potential reliability concerns against the benefits before making a purchase.

fits my need for my grandchildren.

I seek it out. Since the corona virus hit, there were very little inventory on new ones. I looke3d around and to no avail. One dealer called me and said that she has a 2019 Metris with only under 400 miles that they use for customers to drive around the lot. I liked it because it fits my needs. I gave up a 2016 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 truck for it. I miss my big boy but no regrets.

Unique little van that grows on you.

Only two people in the world will fully understand the Metris: Europeans who are used to seeing them and Americans who were in love with their Chevy Astro. And that's the appeal of the Metris. A great gap filler between a light weight Asian built model and a massive Sprinter. I purchased a 2018 passenger version that had been returned to the dealer with 15 miles on the clock from a fleet company that folded, essentially a new vehicle at a substantial discount, sight unseen and had it shipped to me. It's used half for business and half for grocery getting. After a few exterior trim options added to the black body, I now have seasoned Benz owners cocking their heads in bewilderment (what the heck is that?). The big chrome star gives them a hint. A little shy on creature comforts but it gets the done. I downsized from a Ford E250 but lost very little in horsepower and towing. Not to mention gaining MPG's and driveway space. Again, If you are one who is concerned with function and loved the old Astro vans, this one is for you. Footnote: My step daughter just ordered one too.

Like our Metris!.

Very solid , quiet and comfortable. If u don’t need to haul heavy loads get the comfort suspension. Would have alleviated the previous reviewers issue. Made our passenger model into a camper and gets 25 mpg on the highway- or more! We like the factory interior and windows. Well worth the money and the seats can be put back in to carry passengers if needed. They are heavy but just snap in to floor channels.
